5 Easy Ways to Improve Your Landing Page and Boost Conversions

Landing pages are web pages on your website that are used to generate leads for your business. The main purpose of a landing page is to entice visitors to perform a desired action whether it is registering an interest in one of your products, arranging a demo, downloading an eBook, signing up to your newsletter, or another product or service that your business offers. Every business, however small or large, can benefit from optimized landing pages.

Businesses use several methods to promote and build traffic to their website. However, ultimately the success of a business online depends largely on how many visitors are converted into sales or leads for the business, referred to as conversion rate. Optimised landing pages are one of the most effective tools a business can use to boost conversions on the website.

Creating effective landing pages have become a standard marketing practice for any business that wants to increase conversions and generate leads for the business. In this article we take a look at 5 easy but highly effective ways to get better results from your landing page.

1. Focus All Attention on One Conversion Action

Your landing page should be dedicated to one task or one desired user action only e.g. register for your newsletter, sign-up for a webinar, download an eBook or another lead that is relevant to your business. The entire attention should be focused on one conversion event. More than one action will dilute the focus away from your primary lead event and have a negative impact on your conversion rate.? If you are running multiple campaigns or wish to generate additional leads from your website, use dedicated landing pages for each.

Take a look at DeVry University?s landing page below for requesting information about the courses. There is only one conversion action on the page and all attention is devoted toward it.

Landing Page - University

2. Test Variations

A/B split testing is widely acknowledged as an essential element of an effective landing page optimisation strategy. However, it remains under-utilised. Simple changes like the design or colour of your buttons or the placements of your lead capture form can make a huge difference to your conversion rates.

Businesses have been able to double their conversion rate by applying simple tweaks and variations to their landing page elements. Split testing makes this possible. Google?s Website Opitmizer is one of the easiest ways to do this.

Make it easy ? Make sure that?s it is obvious what you want the visitor to do and even more obvious how to do it. (This is where the use of video, audio, arrows and buttons can be effective.) Limit any data collection to name and email or your conversions will drop unless what you are offering is so valuable people will give more information.

3. Use Supporting Media

Studies have shown that use of relevant media e.g. an image or a video on your landing page is a sure-shot way to boost conversions. It also makes your page more appealing and can help to highlight benefits. Displaying an image of the product in use or a video tour are some examples of supporting media that can boost conversions. You can also create a video explaining your product or create a video testimonial of existing customers. Seeing a real person can make your landing page more engaging for visitors, helps to build trust and personalise the user experience.

Landing Page Videos

4. Remove All Unnecessary Elements

A typical web page consists of several elements e.g. menu, newsletter sign-up, general text about your business, footer links, and more. It may be beneficial to remove a lot of these elements from your landing page. Effective landing pages that get the best results are usually those that focus entirely on the product you are offering and do not give user with additional options on the page. As a general rule, try to remove elements that are not related to you primary conversion event.

Take a look at Match.Com?s registration landing page below. There are no links, or any other additional elements on the page, giving the user only option which is to register for the service.

Landing Page - Match.com

Some items you can remove are:

  • General Website menu
  • General header and footer used on the rest of your page
  • All other secondary conversion elements like newsletter sign-ups or other calls to action
  • All extra content or links that are not directly related to your primary conversion event

5. Leverage Your Thank You Page

The thank you page or confirmation screen is the page where users are redirected to upon successful completion of the desired action on your landing page. Although this is a very important part of your conversion process, it is often overlooked.

A good confirmation page offers the ideal opportunity to get more out of your landing page and should be planned carefully. In addition to a relevant confirmation message and fulfilment of your offering, you can take advantage of this space to boost engagement further. E.g. you can offer something extra such as an eBook, report or another download relevant to your main conversion action. Confirmation page can also be used to generate additional leads.

Take a look at the?eBook confirmation page on Hubspot below. It is a perfect example of how you can leverage your thank you page.

ODFW to Stock Willamette Ponds With Huge Trout

CLACKAMAS, Ore. ? Trout fishermen yearning to catch a big fish will have the opportunity to do so during the months of December and early January as the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife kicks off its annual brood trout stocking program.

That?s when rainbow trout weighing from 7-12 pounds will be released at several locations around the Willamette Valley.

The large fish are produced as part of ODFW?s brood trout program at Roaring River hatchery near Scio, Ore., one of the agency?s primary trout rearing facilities. Brood trout are 3- and 4-year-old trout used to produce the eggs necessary to sustain the hatchery program. Although trout can continue to produce eggs for many years, at age four they reach what hatchery managers consider the point of diminishing returns, according to Luke Allen, manager of Roaring River hatchery. So these are removed from the hatchery system and taken to local fishing holes to make room for the next generation of brood stock.

?These are big, beautiful fish,? said Alex Farrand, fish biologist at ODFW?s South Willamette Watershed District. ?For many trout fishermen, the opportunity to catch one of these lunkers is the highlight of the year.?

This year brood trout are being released at 10 locations across the Willamette Valley ? Canby Pond in Canby, Henry Hagg Lake near Forest Grove, Huddleston Pond in Willamina, Junction City Pond near Eugene, Mt. Hood Pond in Gresham, Sheridan Pond in Sheridan, Timber Linn and Waverly lakes in Albany, Walter Wirth Lake and Walling Pond in Salem. Some of these lakes have already been stocked and the remainder will receive fish next week and periodically during the next 4-6 weeks. Anglers are reminded that Henry Hagg Lake is closed for the winter and will not reopen to fishing until the first Saturday of March 2013.

Many of the brood trout exceed 20 inches, which means the daily bag limit on these fish is one per day under Oregon sport fishing regulations.

Future stockings depend on the availability of brood stock, according to Farrand, who explained that these fish aren?t available for release until after they?ve spawned. Any additional stockings will be announced in ODFW?s weekly recreation report, which is posted on-line on Wednesday mornings at www.dfw.state.or.us/RR/willamette. For detailed directions to the release sites, anglers are encouraged to visit the agency?s on-line trout stocking map, which can be accessed at www.dfw.state.or.us/resources/fishing/trout_stocking_schedules.

Study shows surge of bad disease genes in Europe

By Maggie Fox, NBC News

A scan of all the mutations in the human gene map shows something surprising ? people of European descent are evolving fast, and not for the better.

The study finds that in the past 5,000 years, European-Americans have developed a huge batch of potentially harmful genetic mutations ? many more than African-Americans.

The study, published in the journal Nature, may help explain why so many people develop diseases even though they don?t have common genetic mutations. It can also help explain why different people have so many different reactions to the same drug, said Joshua Akey of the University of Washington in Seattle who led the study.

It likely has to do with population explosion, Akey said. European populations expanded after the Ice Age ended and prosperous agricultural societies emerged. ?The number of mutations that exist is directly attributable to the population growth that happened in the last 5,000 years,? Akey told NBC News.

?The things that allowed us to go from millions to billions of has also been the same process that has been pumping in all these new mutations.?

Akey and colleagues at genetics institutions across the country examined the gene sequences of more than 6,500 people ? more than 4,200 European-Americans and 2,200 African-Americans. They were looking for small changes in the genetic code called single nucleotide variants ? one-letter differences in the genetic code of A,C, T and G.

They found ?an enormous excess of rare variants? in the European-Americans. And 73 percent of these mutations only appeared in the human genome in the past 5,000 to 10,000 years. Most were mutations that are known to weaken proteins, Akey said, and most of these harmful mutations were also in the people of European descent.

Now researchers are working to see which of these mutations might be associated with diseases. But many are in known disease-causing genes, such as the LAMC1 gene associated with premature ovarian failure, LRP1, which is linked with both Alzheimer?s disease and obesity and the CPE gene linked to hardening of the arteries.

Most are rare mutations ? meaning they only affect a few people. ?Some genes might be more disease-causing than other genes,? Akey said.

It may explain why it?s been so hard to find clear genetic links to many diseases. ?We have been looking for disease risk where it isn?t,? he said. ?The last five to 10 years have been dominated by looking for common genetic variations that dominate common diseases. There is a lot of disease risk that is unexplained. Maybe there are classes of mutations that haven?t been looked at.?

The findings could explain why some people can smoke for a lifetime and never get lung cancer or heart disease, while someone else might suffer a heart attack despite having healthy blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

It definitely shows evolution in action, Akey said. ?It?s just the process of evolution playing out in real time,? he said. ?The dramatic population expansions that occurred over the past couple thousand years had a profound consequence on our genetic variability.?

Genetic mutations usually occur by accident ? they are just mistakes that get made when DNA gets copied. They become important to evolution when they affect a person?s ability to survive and have children. The expansion of civilization, and the ability of societies to care for people who are less fit, was probably a factor in allowing these mutations to spring up, Akey said. ?I think that is undoubtedly true,? he said.

Some of the genes identified in the scan also affect peoples? response to drugs. That could explain why some people are helped, for example, by a cholesterol-lowering drug while others may not be. There wouldn?t have been much ?selective pressure? on these genes before the modern drug era, but that doesn?t mean the genes were not influenced by something else. ?It turns out that genes involved in adverse drug responses also have different biological roles,? Akey said ? for instance, detoxifying certain foods.

There may even be more evolution in the future, Akey predicted. One example ? phenylketonuria or PKU. It?s caused by a mutation in a gene that breaks down an amino acid called phenylalanine. People with PKU mutations must eat a strict, low-protein diet or they can develop seizures and mental retardation.

Now newborns are routinely tested for PKU so they can start the diet immediately and avoid any brain damage. Akey said because these kids can now grow up and lead normal lives, they will likely start having children and the gene may become more common in the population.

Main One Cable and Phase3 Telecom partner to increase Internet ...

Main One Cable Company and Phase3 Telecom, both leading indigenous telecommunications infrastructure companies, have entered into a strategic business partnership with the aim of increasing broadband Internet penetration in Nigeria and across the West African sub-region.

Main One Cable owns and operates West Africa?s first privately-owned undersea communication cable system that runs from Europe to Africa with landing points along the West African coast including Nigeria and Ghana.

Phase3 Telecom is a national long distance operator and West Africa?s first privately owned aerial fibre optic cable deployed on high-voltage electricity power lines.

According to Stanley Jegede, Chief Executive Officer of Phase3 Telecom, the pact with Main One will provide the needed solution to truly and practically drive broadband availability in Nigeria. He added that many government development programmes can now be on the path of realisation as improved access would be available throughout the country.

?When two smart companies work together, they create smarter results. Today, the impact of Information and Communications Technologies on globalisation has increased dramatically, and impacted positively on the developmental process in Africa. We believe that a robust and reliable open access network will constitute a platform for efficient e-government, e-voting, e-commerce, e-payment, e-banking, eLearning and media applications, thereby increasing sustainable human, political, economic and social development.?

Under the partnership, the firms will be offering Nigerians high capacity broadband Internet services at very affordable rates using Phase3 Telecom?s extensive aerial fibre network and Main One?s huge bandwidth deployed through its undersea cable. The partnership, which will offer joint provisioning of services, requires the integration of their networks and collaboration in provisioning and service delivery. This partnership is however expected to increase broadband Internet penetration across Nigeria, as internet customers will be able to obtain quality services at affordable prices.

Korg announces iPolysix App for iPad, recreates classic analog polyphonic synthesizer

iPolysix App for iPad

MELVILLE, N.Y. /Music Industry Newswire/ ? Korg has unveiled the latest in its series of musical instrument apps. The new, intuitive iPolysix app evokes Korg?s legendary analog polyphonic synthesizer while taking full advantage of the iPad? interface. Up to eight instances of the synth can be used in conjunction with new features that include a sequencer, drum machine, multiple effects, Korg?s acclaimed Kaoss touch functionality for intuitive note and controller entry, and a complete automated mixer.

The original Polysix, a six-voice analog polyphonic synthesizer, launched in 1981. It quickly rose in popularity due to its combination of 6-note polyphony (a generous amount for the time) and a price that was nearly half of similarly-featured products. iPolysix uses Korg?s proprietary ?CMT? (Component Modeling Technology) to perfectly simulate the electronic circuits of the original instrument and its distinctively deep and rich pad sounds, pulsing basses, and crisp leads. Its layout offers beginners an easy way to start sound sculpting. It has also been expanded with music production functionality for enhanced musical possibilities.

Polyseq is iPolysix?s integrated polyphonic step sequencer that provides up to 64 steps for two dedicated synth instances and six poly-based drum instances ? all drawing on the Polysix engine and interface. Unique features include sequence mode functionality from Korg?s SQ-10 analog sequencer that allows users to play a sequence backward, or play back only the odd or even-numbered steps.

Users can call up either an onscreen keyboard for easy note entry, or two side by side Kaoss Pads that can be controlled simultaneously: one for note entry and one for control over the user?s choice of synth parameters. Musical phrases can be generated simply by rubbing a finger on the Kaoss Pad. This enables professional music production and creative performances, even for those who have no musical knowledge or have never played an instrument before. These Kaoss Pads have been customized for iPolysix to allow not only single-note performance, but also polyphonic playing.

Polystage is a platform on which iPolysix users can share their songs. iPolysix users can make their songs available to other users across the globe simply by uploading their song directly from the interface. iPolysix users can listen to and rate other user?s songs, or collaborate on a remix from rough ideas that have been uploaded.

Similarly, users can share their works via the popular SoundCloud feature from within the iPolysix app. SoundCloud provides a way to publish songs or to collaborate on new music with friends anywhere in the world via audio data export.

To celebrate the launch, the iPolysix app is available for download from Apple?s App Store at a special price of US $14.99 until December 31st, 2012. The regular price is US$29.99.

Also in celebration of the launch, Korg has announced a special half price offer on all Korg apps from November 26 through December 31, 2012.

Dating sites pair politicos by their leanings

This Thanksgiving, are you looking for someone to bring home to the family who likes taking long walks on the beach, playing frisbee in the park and?voting on the same side of the ticket as you?

With the American electorate increasingly divided between Republicans and Democrats, three men have decided to play yenta with politics. JD Beebe, Alex Fondrier and Francois Briard are the team behind Political Matchmakers, a company that runs two separate online dating sites: Red State Date and Blue State Date.

The sites match users for compatibility based on their political leanings, "because no one should have to date a liberal," the host says at the end of a tongue-in-cheek video promoting RedStateDate.com.

The slogan is reversed in the BlueStateDate.com video.

In the dating world, "Status quo is to avoid talking politics at all costs," Fondrier said. But for most partners, politics plays a more important role than looks or personality, according to a study out of the University of Nebraska.

Beebe compared Red State and Blue State Date to sites like Geek 2 Geek , a site that brags it's "the best place on the net to meet geeks."

But for some singles, politics are their main passion. "People crowding the rallies, people in public relations, groups of people who work in government, in Washington, D.C., and the state capitals," Foundrier said.

"There's obviously tons of people out there like this," Beebe said. "Let's make something for them."

When users first sign up at one of the sites, they're asked for standard information like gender, looks and marital status.

But what sets these sites apart is what comes next: Users rank where they stand on issues like the Patriot Act, abortion and fiscal policy. Then they're given a score that tells them how liberal or conservative they are and serves as a basis to help find their matches.

There's no "Conservatives Keep Out" sign on the Blue State Date site, but Beebe and Fondrier say they hope eventually to offer the option of matching users to people on the other end of the political spectrum. There are some self-identified conservatives who've chosen to be on the blue side, and vice versa. The founders aren't about to kick them off.

"We're learning along with the users how they want to best use it," Fondrier said.

The sites have seen thousands of users sign up since their launch a couple of weeks before the election.

Does their success mean there's no hope that Dems and the GOP can ever get along?

"When it comes down to the everyday American, I think they're willing to befriend people from the other side of the aisle, no problem," Fondrier said. "But I think in a long term relationship, marriage, raising children, that's a little bit different."

"That decision has already been made long before we came onto the scene."

Falcons overcome mistakes to beat Buccaneers 24-23

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) ? Atlanta coach Mike Smith spoke highly of the Falcons' defense. Without its solid performance, Matt Ryan may not have had an opportunity to lead his latest game-winning drive.

The Falcons (10-1) held off Tampa Bay 24-23 Sunday, overcoming two turnovers by their star quarterback in part because the Buccaneers settled for a pair of field goals rather than touchdowns after Ryan threw a second-quarter interception and lost a fumble on a fourth-quarter sack.

"I thought our defense did an outstanding job again. They were put in some tough situations after turnovers," Smith said, adding that limiting Bucs rookie Doug Martin to 50 yards rushing on 21 carries was a key to the game as well.

"We knew it was going to be one of our 'musts,' and I thought we did a nice job," Smith added. "I thought we played the run extremely well, controlled the line of scrimmage. That is an outstanding running back."

Ryan completed his first 10 passes and finished 26 of 32 for 353 yards and one touchdown, an 80-yarder to Julio Jones, who had nine receptions for 147 yards despite playing on a sore right ankle that limited him in practice.

Atlanta got a lift from the return of linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, who was back after missing three games with an ankle injury.

Josh Freeman threw for 256 yards for Tampa Bay, however he was sacked twice and failed to throw a touchdown pass for the first time in 14 games. Martin scored both of his team's TDs on 1-yard runs and Connor Barth kicked three field goals.

"It's hard to win games by threes," coach Greg Schiano said. "Sevens add up considerably quicker."

The Falcons (10-1) kept pace with the Houston Texans for the NFL's best record and ended a four-game winning streak by the up-and-coming Bucs (6-5).

"They are playing with a lot of confidence," said Ryan, who has won seven of his past eight starts against the Bucs. "It's always been a tough place for us to come play. They play with great effort, and I think they have a good football team."

Ryan teamed with Jones on his long TD midway through the third quarter, but the Falcons found themselves trailing 23-17 after the Bucs marched to Martin's second TD, then used a sack-fumble to set up a field goal that left Atlanta needing another fourth-quarter comeback to win.

Ryan obliged by a leading a six-play, 64-yard march that Michael Turner finished with a 3-yard TD run that put the NFC South leaders ahead for good with 7:55 remaining.

Barth missed a 56-yard goal for Tampa Bay in the closing minutes, and the winning streak that's helped the Bucs climb back into playoff contention following a 1-3 start ended when Freeman's desperation pass fell incomplete in the Atlanta end zone with no time left on the clock.

"The last drive, that's something we've done before this season," Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez said. "I really think that's a positive for us to be able to come up with plays like that when we have to like that. ... I'm really happy with the way we responded."

It's getting to be a way of life. Ryan has also led late marches to beat Carolina, Washington, Oakland and Arizona this season and has put together 21 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime since entering the league in 2008 ? four of them against the division rival Bucs.

The Falcons won't have long to celebrate this one. They host the New Orleans Saints on Thursday night in a rematch of the only game they've lost.

"Ten and 1 is great, but I'll tell you what I've said since the beginning of the season: We're just jockeying for position," Gonzalez said. "We just want to put ourselves in the best position, playing the best football. Right around this time is when you want to start jelling as a team and take it on into the playoffs because that's the most important thing."

The win stopped the Bucs, who've won five or seven following a 1-3 start, from tightening the NFC South standings. Turner also scored a fourth-quarter TD that helped the Falcons overcome six turnovers to beat Arizona 23-19 last week.

"It was a hard-fought game by both teams, a very physical game," Schiano said. "But I do think missed opportunities were a big part of it. There were some chances both offensively and defensively, and in the kicking game."

NOTES: Martin scored on a pair of 1-yard run for the Bucs. ... After throwing seven interceptions in Atlanta's first nine games, Ryan has thrown six the past two weeks. ... Falcons CBs Asante Samuel (shoulder) and Dunta Robinson (head) left the game with injuries in the third quarter, but returned.

U.S. boxer Hector Macho Camacho dies | Online News

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (Reuters) ? Three-time world boxing champion Hector ?Macho? Camacho died on Saturday, four days after he was shot in the face in a drive-by shooting, doctors said. He was 50.

Camacho was pronounced dead after being taken off life support following a second heart attack early Saturday morning, Rio Piedras Medical Director Ernesto Torres told reporters.

Puerto Rico officials planned a public wake for the boxer at the Department of Sports & Recreation headquarters in San Juan, but details were pending.

The former U.S. boxing champ had been declared brain dead on Thursday after he was shot on Tuesday while sitting in a car with a friend, Adrian Mojica Moreno, 49, outside a liquor store in the San Juan suburb of Bayamon, Camacho?s birthplace.

Two gunmen opened fire on the car, killing the driver, Mojica Moreno, and hitting Camacho in the jaw. The bullet fractured two vertebrae and lodged in his shoulder, damaging the arteries that carried blood to the brain, doctors said.

Police found nine small bags of cocaine in the driver?s pockets and one open in the car.

The shooting is under investigation and no arrests have been made.

Camacho, a left-handed fighter who grew up in New York?s Spanish Harlem neighborhood, had a record of 79-6-3 with 38 knockouts. His three-decade career featured fights with a ?who?s who? of boxing and a flamboyant style that included entering the ring in an outfit based on the Puerto Rican flag.

Camacho?s body was taken to the hospital?s pathology section and brought to the Institute of Forensic Sciences as required by law, Torres told reporters.

El Nuevo Dia newspaper reported the family planned a funeral in New York, where Camacho grew up.

Family members had debated removing him from life support, with some members including his son Hector ?Machito? Camacho holding out hope for his recovery.

On Friday evening, his mother Maria Matias acknowledged during a brief talk with reporters at the medical center that that ?God has taken him? and indicated that she was waiting for the arrival of Camacho?s other children to Puerto Rico before disconnecting him.

Some family members had discussed organ donation, but Torres said too much time had passed from when the former fighter was declared brain dead on Thursday morning to donate his organs now.

Camacho Jr. lamented the crime and violence confronting Puerto Rico. ?You have to stop the violence and the drugs. Rap singers have to stop glorifying violence. This is for the youth. All the street promises them now is death, drugs, and jail.?

Love among the ruins: Despite Sandy, wedding is on

John Makely / NBC News

James Keane, a volunteer with the Rockaway Point F.D and a full-time dispatcher for the FDNY, and his fiancee Kristen Diffendale on Sunday in Breezy Point.

By Miranda Leitsinger, NBC News

BREEZY POINT, N.Y. -- The wedding had been two years in the making: The church was booked, the custom fuchsia and blue Converse sneakers for the bridesmaids were ordered, and the firehouse was secured as a staging ground for the groomsmen.

But then superstorm Sandy struck, flooding the firehouse, forcing the church to turn into a command center, and scattering the guests and the newlyweds-to-be, as well as the custom Converse, less than a month before the big day: Friday, Nov. 23.

Now, with much of their Breezy Point community in ruins, Kristen Diffendale, 29,?and James Keane, 28,?are turning their wedding into a celebration of what the storm couldn?t take away.

?All of our family and friends are from Breezy Point and from Rockaway (another hard hit community nearby) so we figured this is, it?s not only a night for us, it?s a night for all of our friends and family to get to some sort of normalcy, to feel like everything?s alright, to be away from this for a day,? she said. ?We want to give that to our friends, just a night of just absolute back to normal.?

As Sandy swept through the seaside community of Breezy Point Oct. 29, Diffendale hunkered down at the home she shares with her future in-laws and her three-year-old daughter, Madison Shea. Keane, her fianc? and Madison?s dad, was in Brooklyn working as a dispatcher for the New York City Fire Department.

'What Thanksgiving is all about': Breezy Point teen lifts spirits in devastated hometown

?It was pretty scary ? I was a little worried when the water came up we just, we didn?t know where it was coming from and we figured out it was the ocean that was coming towards us,? she said.??And then we saw the fire, we saw the glow ? and then I started to get really nervous because it wasn?t stopping.?

'I thought everybody was gone'
Keane lost cellphone contact with his family around 7 p.m. that night. He got permission to leave his job and raced to a firehouse close to his home. But due to the flooding, no fire trucks were being allowed into the area in southern Queens where Breezy Point is located.

When that order lifted, and he was finally able to get on a truck speeding to the area, he spotted the fires lighting up the night sky.

John Makely / NBC News

James Keane and his fiancee, Kristen Diffendale, hope their wedding will provide respite for their guests.

?I didn?t know what was happening down here. I thought it was gone down here,? he said this week,?standing amid volunteers and victims near the relief center in their once idyllic community.?

?He thought I left him,? Diffendale said, looking into his eyes, breaking from the couple?s otherwise jovial banter.

?I thought everybody was gone,? Keane said.

Their home took in several feet of water in the basement and there was damage to the roof, but the dwelling did not burn. The family, however, spent a frightful night riding out the storm, with Dipphendale clutching her grandmother's rosary and in tears.?

Once Keane, a volunteer firefighter at the Rockaway Point Volunteer Fire Department, learned his family was all right, he?joined the effort to battle the blaze.

Diffendale and Keane are among the lucky ones in Breezy Point, where Sandy?s hurricane-force winds sparked a six-alarm blaze that burned more than 100 homes to the ground. It is believed that the rest of the 2,100 homes in this close-knit community were also damaged, many because of flooding.

The couple was unsure about keeping their post-Thanksgiving wedding date in the aftermath of the disaster. Like many of their friends and neighbors, they have been busy with the relief effort: he, cleaning and gutting basements, and she, hauling supplies to victims.

?For a while, people were asking, ?What about the wedding??? said Diffendale, who works in special education. ?But we were, like, ?We?re worrying about what?s going on right now.' ? We put ourselves last for a couple of weeks.?

But as the date approached, and more people asked them not to postpone their impending nuptials, the couple decided the community needed a party.

?We?ve been planning this wedding for two years and we had to re-plan it in two weeks,? Keane said.

Residents of the Northeast are still picking up the pieces after Superstorm Sandy.

'People need a break from this'
The change in plans entailed: moving their wedding to a hall in Long Island and getting permission from church leaders at Saint Frances de Sales Parish to still have their marriage recognized by the church; booking rooms at a local hotel for Keane and the groomsmen because the firehouse was out of commission; and arranging for buses to transport many of the 300 guests to the wedding, since so many were forced to relocate.

Diffendale said they weren?t ?stressing the little stuff anymore,? and her only near-Bridezilla experience came while tracking down the special-made sneakers, which have the wedding date inscribed on them. The mail delivery was interrupted by?the storm and because the shoes were in different packages, they ended up in different locations. Diffendale was told the shoes would be delivered Nov. 28, after the wedding, but a shipping agent helped her track them down.

?People need a break from this,? Keane said of the weeks-long cleanup and repair in chilly temperatures. ?They need a break from doing this every day.?

The wedding has taken on new meaning for the couple, too.

?Absolutely,? Diffendale said. ?We thought each other were dead.?

?You thought you had, I don?t know, nothing," Keane said. "I didn?t even know there was even a neighborhood here anymore ... when I came down."

Despite the disaster that befell their neighborhood, they don?t expect a sullen affair.

?We?re an Irish neighborhood so we know how to have a good time,? Diffendale said, laughing. ?It?s going to be a very good time.?

A Guide to Biological Illustration ? ArtPlantae Today

Pen and ink illustrations of plants are found most often in field guides. They convey a great deal of information and are attractive works of art, even though being a ?work of art? might not be their primary purpose.

Learning how to draw in pen and ink can be a challenge. Figuring out how to make marks in the proper order to create the intended effect takes some thought. After all, ink is so, so ?? permanent.

One can easily find a nice selection of instructional books about working in pen and ink. Resources dedicated to drawing in the sciences, however, are a little more difficult to find but they are out there. Take for example Biological Illustration: A Guide to Drawing for Reproduction by Claire Dalby and D. H. Dalby.

This 14-page paper is a helpful introduction to drawing in pen and ink. Don?t let its age (32 years) cause you to doubt the value of the information it has. While today there may be more convenient pen and ink tools at our disposal, not to mention technologically nifty ways of creating pen and ink-like drawings with apps, nothing beats learning from people with years of experience behind them.

In their paper, Dalby & Dalby (1980) address many interesting topics. Topics such as creating diagrammatic and naturalistic images, working from dried or preserved material, and reproducing line drawings for publication. They include in their paper a 9-page guide to drawing in black and white where they discuss: dots, lines and tones; pure line drawing; tone; dots; hatching; artificial tones and tints; pens; pencils; brushes; paper; spare paper; ink; white paint; light boxes and tracing tables; linen testers and proportional dividers. I think you will find the section about hatching of particular interest. In this section, Dalby & Dalby (1980) present the fruit of the opium poppy drawn seven different ways. Here you can learn how line drawing, stippling, hatching and a combination of dots and lines can affect the appearance of a specimen.

I think you will also enjoy the troubleshooting section in which they address drawing challenges. Here Dalby & Dalby (1980) offer suggestions about how to create smooth surfaces, thin subjects, hairy subjects, small subjects, complicated subjects with too much detail, colored subjects, spirals, and intricate symmetrical subjects.

Another helpful section is the one in which the authors address printing techniques and their limitations. In this section, they provide invaluable insight that will help you plan line drawings for publication.

This paper is a wonderful addition to any drawing library. It is available online for free from the Field Studies Council. Click on the link below and scroll down to Volume 5, Number 2.

95% The Sessions

All Critics (143) | Top Critics (38) | Fresh (136) | Rotten (7)

A funny, tender and mostly unsentimentalized movie about physical and emotional triumph.

Forced to do all his acting with his face, Hawkes displays the kind of camera-arresting capability that has earned others Oscar nominations.

This is a crowd-pleaser of the finest sort.

Using only his tilted head, his eyes, nose, and mouth and that quizzical voice, Hawkes brings O'Brien to life.

It's funny and well-meaning, with great performances, but the story plays out more like an Afterschool Special with full-frontal nudity.

Raw, unrestrained and sympathetic without giving in to melodrama, 'The Sessions' is about a man facing a physical challenge who decides he wants to become intimate with a woman.

An intelligent, funny, insightful film that offers a frank examination of sex. It's not prurient or titillating, just truthful.

A remarkable actor, John Hawkes, gives a remarkable performance as a remarkable character.

Surprisingly funny and touching.

Presents the sensitive O'Brien as a brave, funny, unselfish and unlikely romantic-fantasy dream hero for disappointed, weary or jaded older female moviegoers.

The uplifting struggle for living a life of dignity for paralyzed from the neck down polio victim Mark O'Brien.

The sex scenes are frank and explicit, but never cheap and exploitative. (Yes, they get naked. Grow up.) The nudity isn't airbrushed pin-up perfection, but raw and real - and all the more lovely and moving because of it.

Taking the good with the bad, this isn't a terrible movie, though it is being rather overhyped. I found myself laughing a lot and enjoying the transformations the actors go through, but an unengaging story only serves to drag it down.

A film, inspired by the life of the late poet-journalist Mark O'Brien, that celebrates the relationship between physical and emotional intimacy.

Not just another weepy drama of overcoming odds, a My Left Foot with a different appendage. The Sessions is often brazenly funny, not from shocking dialogue but characters reacting the way people do, especially with such a flustering subject as sex.

an unusually frank and frequently humorous meditation on the transformative power of connection

Take away the nudity and the frank sex talk and you'd pretty much be left with a high-minded TV movie -- with unusually good actors.

Hunt's tangible disregard for false modesty does justice to the misunderstood surrogacy profession, while Hawkes' committed yet matter-of-fact portrayal of O'Brien masterfully avoids theatricality or sappy heartstring tugging.

Lewin has never had talent like Hawkes, Hunt, and Macy as his instruments before, and he makes the best of them.

Popular sex therapist Dr. Ruth once said that sexual surrogates are "illegal." The Sessions makes them mainstream.

An adult film that approaches the serious subject of sex with refreshingly explicit honesty.

The honest performances and assured direction makes The Sessions an extremely accomplished film that celebrates sexuality.

John Hawkes and Helen Hunt generate an endearing chemistry, here, turning in a couple of virtuoso performances deserving of serious consideration come Oscar season.

Writer-director Ben Lewin has made the decision to position the film somewhere between the comedic and dramatic genres.... and it works.

Australian veteran writer/director Ben Lewin (The Dunera Boys) delivers a heartfelt gem that is as moving as it is unassuming. It easily chimes in as one of the films of the year.

The four other finalists: "This Is How You Lose Her," by Junot Diaz; "A Hologram for the King," by Dave Eggers; "The Yellow Birds, by Kevin Powers; and "Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk," by Ben Fountain.

Erdrich didn't mention her own novel, "The Round House," but another author-bookseller took care of that. Ann Patchett, the writer who founded Parnassus Books in Nashville, says she has been recommending Erdrich's story of a boy seeking his mother's rapist well before the award was announced in mid-November.

"I read the book really early on, and I've thought about it every single day since," Patchett said. "It's dark, funny, complex and very, very moving."

Patchett had several other suggestions, from Jon Meacham's biography "Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power," a pick she thinks ideal for men; to Maile Maloy's "The Apothecary" for middle schoolers. She also loved J.K. Rowling's first grownup novel, "The Casual Vacancy," a feeling she made clear in October when she interviewed the "Harry Potter" author on stage at Lincoln Center in Manhattan.

Erdrich also cited the illustrated edition of Edmund de Waal's "The Hare With Amber Eyes," writing that "it feels lustrous in hand, orderly, pleasing. This is what a book should be."

Gayle Shanks, owner of the Changing Hands bookstore in Tempe, Ariz., likes the novel "Beautiful Ruins" by Jess Walter; Deb Perlman's "Smitten Kitchen" cookbook; and Marcus Samuelsson's memoir "Yes, Chef."

Barnes & Noble is suggesting works of humor ("The Onion Book of Known Knowledge"), music (An illustrated Rolling Stones biography to mark the band's 50th anniversary) and history ("Reporting the Revolutionary War").

Sarah McNally, owner of McNally Jackson Books in Manhattan likes Alice Munro's story collection "Dear Life"; Alan Ryan's two-volume history "On Politics" and Louise Glueck's "Poems 1962-2012." Kate Milford, a children's author and McNally Jackson employee, suggests the picture book "Cecil, the Pet Glacier," by Matthea Harvey; the middle school novel "Twelve Kinds of Ice," by Ellen Bryan Obed and illustrator Barbara McClintock.

"This is going to be one of those things adults buy for a kid and end up keeping themselves or giving to other adults, too," Milford says of the Obed book. "It's beautifully illustrated, beautifully written, and just feels like a classic gift book."
