Ecological monitoring on bird populations in Europe re-evaluated

ScienceDaily (Aug. 30, 2012) ? Biodiversity and environmental monitoring is of crucial importance to diagnose changes in the environment and natural populations in order to provide conservation practice with relevant data and recommendations. The information from monitoring is required, for example, for the design and evaluation of biodiversity policies, conservation management, land use decisions, and environmental protection.

Birds are headline indicators of biodiversity due to their worldwide distribution and popularity. More than 600 bird monitoring programs are in place in Europe, resulting in huge investment of effort. Nearly 28,000 people have been involved in the 144 monitoring programs analyzed in the Nature Conservation paper, spending almost 80,000 person days per year. The evaluation was performed in SCALES, a large-scale integrated project funded by the 7th Framework Program (FP7) of the European Union.

At a dedicated SCALES symposium at the 3rd European Congress of Conservation Biology (ECCB) in Glasgow on 28th-31st of August 2012, the lead author Dr Dirk Schmeller from the CNRS, France and guest researcher at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research -- UFZ in Leipzig, Germany, commented: "Although popular among conservationists, bird-monitoring practices have never been characterized quantitatively. We undertook a focused questionnaire-based survey to objectively explore the strengths and weaknesses of the massive bird-monitoring effort in Europe. The results indicate a high potential for further improvements to bird monitoring in sampling design, data analysis and involvement of volunteers from the public."

"Variation in space and time can cause a significant deviation in the monitoring results, which may lead to incorrect conservation policy decisions," added Dr Klaus Henle from UFZ and coordinator of SCALES. "Therefore increasing awareness of the spatial or temporal scale at which monitoring has been performed can be of crucial importance!"

To optimize the monitoring practices, the scientists have proposed a range of recommendations. For most monitoring programs, the best data type to be collected is quantitative (count) data, such as number of individuals, which provide an early warning for conservation and policy. Further, monitoring could optimize resource allocation between independent monitoring sites. Importantly, even low variation between sites or years can induce spurious conclusions; hence repetitive sampling of the same sites within a year should be the rule.

In case of limited manpower, Schmeller and colleagues recommend an increase in the number of monitoring samples, even at the expense of the size of each sample. Further, more collaborations between monitoring programs at different scales need to be established, so that the sampled data may be integrated and re-used.

Finally, monitoring coordinators have to make special efforts to attract volunteers. Coordinators need to keep in mind several important points: 1) the specific characters of the local community; 2) having a recruitment strategy for volunteers interested in monitoring; 3) maintaining good communication with the volunteers; 4) having low hierarchies and treat volunteers with respect, and 5) making links to other voluntary organizations to add value to the work. Schmeller adds: "There is no one clear recipe to recruit and keep volunteers, but what is important is to keep in mind that the volunteers sacrifice their spare time for monitoring activities, which are of interest to all society!"

Parallels 8 Forces Mountain Lion and Windows 8 to Play Nice

Parallels for Mac Version 8

Parallels lets you run Windows on your Mac. The trick is you can run both OSes simultaneously, with your Windows apps showing up just like Mac apps would. Version 8 supports Mountain Lion features, such as dictation and notifications, for Windows apps.

Click here to view this gallery.

[More from Mashable: Samsung Reveals Its First Windows RT Tablet]

You may know that you can boot Windows on your Mac machine by virtue of the two operating systems sharing the same processing technology. What you may not know is you can actually run both at the same time through emulator software like Parallels.

The app has been around since 2006 (ever since Apple switched to Intel chips), and has been steadily improving ever since. If your business has the all-too-common headache of supporting both Windows machines and Macs, desktop simulators like Parallels and VMware Fusion can help get all your computers running the same apps.

[More from Mashable: Watch Samsung?s Galaxy Note 2 Event Live]

Parallels just revealed Version 8 of its Mac desktop software. It aims to fully merge the two latest iterations of Mac and Windows, those being Mountain Lion and Windows 8. Parallels can already run Windows "invisibly," letting you open your Windows apps without needing to switch to fully immerse yourself in the Windows environment. Now, the software takes that experience to the next level.

With Version 8, you'll be able to add your Windows apps to the Mac Launchpad. It also integrates your Windows notifications into the Mac OS notification center. Mountain Lion dictation is supported in Windows apps. And if you ever encountered a web page that doesn't render well in Safari, you can open it in Internet Explorer with one click.

SEE ALSO: Mountain Lion Vs. Windows 8: Which One Is Better?

Possibly best of all is how Parallels brings Mountain Lion gestures to Windows. With two-finger scrolling, pinch-to-zoom, three-finger dragging and swiping between full-screen apps, Parallels may make some of your Windows apps more convenient to use than they would be on a pure Windows machine.

If you shelled out the cash for one of those fancy retina MacBook Pros, you'll love the full retina support for Windows apps, which Parallels promises will bring "crisper fonts, photos, images and animations." It's also continued to optimize the software, claiming the performance is 25% to 30% faster.

In a hands-on demo with Mashable Parallels reps showed a MacBook Pro effortlessly, toggling between Mac and Windows apps at full retina resolution. The Windows app icons were in the launcher, and they behaved just like Mac apps when using OS functions like Expos?. If we didn't know Parallels was running, we would have assumed they were Mac apps (until we made them active and saw all the Windows fonts, of course).

Parallels for Mac Version 8 will be on store shelves Sept. 4 for $79.99, though current customers can get it before then.

What do you think of Parallels? Great tool, or is it slowly becoming obsolete in the age of the cloud? Sound off in the comments.

Galaxy Note II priced for Vodafone: 640 euros of LTE phablet goodness

Galaxy Note II priced for Vodafone,

Wondering when you'll be able to get your hands on a Galaxy Note II and just how much it'll cost? Well... we can't help you. But, a placard spotted on the floor at IFA today should give us some hint as to pricing. When it lands in Germany in the coming months, the second-gen phablet will set customers back €639.90, or about $803, through Vodafone. That's quite the hefty price tag, even for an unsubsidized LTE device. Heck, the current model is only $549 commitment free from AT&T right now. Let's just hope the price in dollars is closer, numerically to the German price and not so close in monetary value.

Pakistani officials confirm death of key militant

ISLAMABAD (AP) ? Pakistani intelligence officials confirmed Thursday that a U.S. drone strike last week near the Afghan border killed the son of the founder of the powerful Haqqani militant network, a major blow to one of the most feared groups fighting American troops in Afghanistan.

Badruddin Haqqani, who has been described as the organization's day-to-day operations commander, was killed on Aug. 24 in one of three strikes that hit militant hideouts in the Shawal Valley in Pakistan's North Waziristan tribal area, said two senior intelligence officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

The presence of the mostly Afghan Haqqani network in North Waziristan has been a major source of friction between Pakistan and the U.S. The Obama administration has repeatedly demanded Pakistan prevent the group from using its territory to launch attacks in Afghanistan, but Islamabad has refused ? a stance many analysts believe is driven by the country's strong historical ties to the Haqqani network's founder, Jalaluddin Haqqani.

The Pakistani intelligence officials didn't specify which strike on Aug. 24 killed Badruddin, but said he was leaving a hideout when the U.S. missiles hit. The confirmation of his death came from their sources within the Taliban, which is allied with the Haqqani network, and agents on the ground, they said. But neither the officials nor their sources have actually seen Badruddin's body.

Pakistani intelligence officials previously said they were 90 percent sure Badruddin was killed in a drone strike in a different part of North Waziristan on Aug. 21. It's unclear what caused the discrepancy.

Afghanistan's intelligence agency said several days ago that its operatives had confirmed Badruddin's death, but did not provide any details. A senior Taliban commander has also confirmed the militant's death.

A Taliban spokesman in Afghanistan, Zabiullah Mujahid, has however rejected reports of Badruddin's death, calling them "propaganda of the enemy."

The U.S. does not often comment publicly on the covert CIA drone program in Pakistan and has not said whether Badruddin was killed.

The areas where the American drone strikes generally occur are extremely remote and dangerous, making it difficult for reporters or others to verify a particular person's death.

Badruddin is considered a vital part of the Haqqani structure. He is believed to be the network's day-to-day operations commander, according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War.

The U.S. State Department has designated Badruddin, along with his father and brothers ? Nasiruddin and Sirajuddin ? as terrorists. The State Department said in May 2011 that Badruddin sits on the Miram Shah Shura, a group that controls all Haqqani network activities and coordinates attacks in southeastern Afghanistan.

Badruddin is also believed to have been responsible for the 2008 kidnapping of New York Times reporter David Rohde, the department said.

After their father effectively retired in 2005, Badruddin and his brother Sirajuddin expanded the network into kidnapping and extortion, both highly profitable for the organization, according to a recent report by the West Point, N.Y.-based Combating Terrorism Center. Afghan intelligence authorities have released intercepts of Badruddin orchestrating an attack against the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul in 2011, the CTC said.

The U.S. has long viewed the Haqqani network as one of the biggest threats to U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan as well as the country's long term stability. The group has shown little interest in negotiating with the Washington, and has pulled off some of the highest-profile and most complex attacks in Afghanistan, although not necessarily the most deadly.

The Pakistani military has refused to target the Haqqani network, saying its troops are stretched too thin fighting militants at war with the state in other parts of the tribal region. But many analysts believe the military views the group as an important potential ally in Afghanistan after foreign forces withdraw. Pakistan worked closely with Badruddin's father, Jalaluddin, during the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan in the 1980s.

Also Thursday, gunmen shot to death a Shiite Muslim judge along with his bodyguard and driver in Quetta, the capital of southwestern Baluchistan province, said senior police official Wazir Khan Nasir. The police suspect it was a sectarian killing, he said.

Extremist Sunni Muslims have been killing Shiites with increasing frequency in Baluchistan and other parts of Pakistan.

Satellites Show Hurricane Isaac From Space

Several different satellites are keeping a keen eye on the Hurricane Isaac, which has made landfall along the Louisiana coast nearly seven years to the day after Hurricane Katrina began laying waste to New Orleans.

Imagery from NASA's TRMM and Terra satellites and the GOES-13 spacecraft, operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, showed Hurricane Isaac's outer bands lashing the Gulf Coast earlier today (Aug. 28) before the huge storm came ashore.

Isaac was upgraded from a tropical storm to a Category 1 hurricane today and currently has maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (130 kph). It is predicted to dum perhaps 20 inches (51 centimeters) of rain on some spots over the next few days.

The satellite shots show just how enormous Isaac is. As of this morning, tropical storm-force winds extended 205 miles (330 kilometers) out from Isaac's center, making the maelstrom 410 miles (660 km) wide, NASA officials said.

The Earth-observing spacecraft have been tracking Isaac's progress for a while, watching as it churned across the eastern Caribbean and tacked north toward Florida and the Gulf of Mexico.

The slow-moving maelstrom's trek toward the Gulf Coast is captured in GOES-13 footage from the last three days, which has been compiled into a minute-long video. Viewers can watch as Isaac's center passes 40 miles (64 km) south of Key West, Fla., on the afternoon of Aug. 26, before the storm turns toward the Mississippi Delta.

While experts are predicting heavy rainfall and flooding in Isaac's wake, the damage should not come close to what Hurricane Katrina wrought seven years ago. That storm registered as a Category 3 hurricane when it came ashore on Aug. 29, 2005, with sustained winds topping out around 127 mph (204 kph).

Some experts estimate Katrina caused $125 billion in damage, making it the costliest natural disaster in United States history. The storm killed more than 1,800 people, most of them in Louisiana. Many of these people died after New Orleans' levee system failed and huge swathes of the city were flooded.

Humasan? Real Estate Blog: Throngs attempt to refinance

Florida is among the nation?s leaders in the refinancing boom.

The number of Floridians applying for a lower interest rate on their home jumped 152 percent in July, compared to the same period last year, a national survey found.

Only Nevada and Michigan had a higher rate of increase of homeowners trying to refinance homes while interest rates are at historic lows, according to the survey by the Mortgage Bankers Association.

What is helping many Floridians: Federal government programs, the association reported. The recent HARP 2.0, for example, allows regularly paying owners with Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac loans, to refinance even if their home is worth less than its mortgage.

?Certainly, the recent program changes to HARP are very beneficial for underwater homeowners in Florida,? said U.S. Treasury spokeswoman Andrea Risotto.

Lenders usually won?t give a new loan unless homeowners have some equity in their home, said Gregory J. Burie, a financial planner and senior vice president of Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in Boca Raton.

But even some underwater Florida owners who aren?t covered by HARP 2.0 are able to refinance: They pay down their old mortgage to have enough equity for a new loan, said Malcolm Hollensteiner, director of Retail Sales at TD Bank.

?It?s been unheard of before, but people want an all-time low interest rate,? he said.

So they?re willing to supply cash to lower what they owe on their home in order to get a lender to give them a new loan, said Hollensteiner.

Many ?fence-sitters? recently have applied to refinance because they think the interest rates have hit bottom, Hollensteiner added. Interest rates lower than 3 percent on mortgages haven?t been seen since agencies began recording the average weekly mortgage rates, he said.

However, recently rising interest rates may be discouraging others from trying to refinance.

In fact, refinancing applications throughout the nation dropped 7 percent last week as interest rates continued their upward climb, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported.

This week, the nation?s average 30-year fixed rate increased for the fourth week in a row to 3.66 percent, up from a historic low of 3.49 percent in late July, Freddie Mac reported. Fixed rate 15-year loans also were up this week to 2.89 percent, an increase from last month?s record low of 2.8 percent.

Still, the rates are a bargain, said Jim Flood, regional manager of Supreme Lending in Plantation.

TD Bank?s Hollensteiner added that now is a traditionally slow time as families are taking vacations or getting kids back in school.

Refinancing applications will pick up after Labor Day, he predicted.

Homeowners just need to do the math before they apply, financial planner Burie said.

?As always you have to determine how long you will be in the house and how long it will take to recover all the closing costs,? he said.

Make sure you get estimates of closing costs before you sign on the dotted line for a new home loan.

Communication Station | Practical Tips for Happy Parenting

I think every mother should have a communication station in their home. ?Even if your children are young and not yet in school, you should create a communication station so have a central place to update the family?s calendar and events.

Creating a communication station is quite simple in fact. ?I?m here to show you how!

Choose a central place in your home that all family members pass by every day.

In our former home I chose the wall when you first walk in the front door, it was also next to the kitchen. ?In the home we?re in now, our communication station is in the kitchen near the dining table. ?Find a place that works for your home and your family.

Remember LESS is MORE! ?Here?s what we use:

When putting your items together, there?s a few things you should think about.

  1. Who will be updating the communication station?
  2. Will children need to reach the folders, the white boards or the hooks?
  3. How wide or tall is your wall? ?This affects how you arrange your items.

This is the communication station in our former house. ?I later took down the clip board and put up another cork board. ?I realized I needed two cork boards: 1 for my son in Kinder. and 1 for my daughter in Preschool.

This was a place we put our keys, sunglasses, my homemaking binder and our mail in our former home.

This is the communication station in our current home. The Command hooks at the bottom are blue, I found them at Wal-Mart for $2.95.

Establishing a Communication Station in your home is actually quite simple: Find your spot, buy your materials, put it together. ?A central place for communication is important for happy parenting!

Groups to push marriage equality during DNC

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? The constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in the host state of the Democratic National Convention has stirred anger and resentment among advocates for marriage equality, many of whom are converging on Charlotte this weekend for the city's gay pride festival.

Organizers say they hope the festival will draw attention to the issue and create momentum that lasts through the political convention that starts the following week. Some of the thousands of protesters expected at the convention will be demonstrating for gay marriage.

"We're excited that the convention is in Charlotte," said David Webb, one of the pride festival's organizers. "But we also want to show that we're united and will continue to push for change."

When North Carolina voters passed the constitutional amendment in May, supporters of gay marriage first demanded that Democrats rethink Charlotte as the location of their convention. But advocates have since seized on the party gathering as a high-profile chance to make their message heard ? with support from the party itself. The national party is expected to approve marriage equality as part of its national platform during the convention being held from Sept. 4-6.

For the first two days, the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte's downtown will be the main venue. On the last day, President Barack Obama will make his acceptance speech at the 74,000-seat outdoor Bank of America Stadium where the city's NFL team plays.

Webb said public events like the festival and convention are important opportunities to rally same-sex couples who were discouraged by the North Carolina vote.

"It's an opportunity for the community to say, 'Yes. The state may have passed an amendment limiting our liberties, but we're going to keep fighting.' This is an opportunity to show the community and ourselves that, you know what, we're not down and out," he said.

When the Democratic Party picked Charlotte to host the convention, the proposal to change North Carolina's constitution was not on the ballot. Like so many states, same-sex marriage already was illegal in North Carolina.

Voters approved the amendment declaring that marriage between a man and woman is the only legal domestic union, prompting angry supporters of same-sex marriage to urge Democrats to move the convention. President Barack Obama stated his support for gay marriage a day after the North Carolina vote.

Democrats have been trying to address the issue. The national Democratic Party's platform committee recently endorsed gay marriage for the first time and called for the repeal of a federal law that recognizes marriage as between a man and a woman.

The platform is a broad statement of the party's priorities on the economy, social issues and national defense that's up for approval at the convention.

Scott Dibble, a committee member and a state senator from Minnesota, said support for gay marriage can attract new voters.

"Young people are looking for a political home right now. This has become a defining moral question of our time," said Dibble, who is gay.

The platform says Democrats support "marriage equality" and the "movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples."

J. Michael Bitzer, a political science and history professor at Catawba College, said Democrats can use the North Carolina vote as "rallying cry for their platform."

"But I think it kinds of sets up an awkwardness that the national Democrats will ratify or solidify their support for marriage equality in a state that recently banned gay marriage," he said

The convention creates an opportunity for more dialogue about same-sex marriage, said the Rev. Jasmine Beach-Ferrar, executive director of the Campaign for Southern Equality. Her group has been organizing the "We Do" campaign which advocates for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

"This convention is a way to highlight some of these contentious issues because North Carolina helps illustrates what's going on. It's good to remind people what's going on here," Beach-Ferrar said.

She said it's an important issue. Same-sex couples don't have the same rights as married couples. That complicates issues such as benefits and adoption.

"For me, there's clearly a real urgency on the issue. And I'm eager for us to move beyond the very predictable polarized debate and actually start talking about how real people are being impacted by discriminatory laws and what the solution is," she said.

US astronaut Neil Armstrong dies

The BBC's Pallab Ghosh, who interviewed Armstrong, says he had an ''ice cool attitude'' which made him an excellent astronaut

US astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, has died aged 82.

A statement from his family says he died from complications from heart surgery he had earlier this month.

He set foot on the Moon on 20 July 1969, famously describing the event as "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind".

US President Barack Obama said Armstrong was "among the greatest of American heroes - not just of his time, but of all time".

Last November he received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest US civilian award.

He was the commander of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. More than 500 million TV viewers around the world watched its touchdown on the lunar surface.

Armstrong and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the moon, collecting samples, conducting experiments and taking photographs.

"The sights were simply magnificent, beyond any visual experience that I had ever been exposed to," Armstrong once said.

'Reluctant hero'

Mr Aldrin told the BBC's Newshour programme: "It's very sad indeed that we're not able to be together as a crew on the 50th anniversary of the mission? [I will remember him] as a very capable commander."

Apollo 11 was Armstrong's last space mission. In 1971, he left the US space agency Nasa to teach aerospace engineering.

Born in 1930 and raised in Ohio, Armstrong took his first flight aged six with his father and formed a lifelong passion for flying.

He flew Navy fighter jets during the Korean War in the 1950s, and joined the US space programme in 1962.

Correspondents say Armstrong remained modest and never allowed himself to be caught up in the glamour of space exploration.

"I am, and ever will be, a white-socks, pocket-protector, nerdy engineer," he said in February 2000, in a rare public appearance.

In a statement, his family praised him as a "reluctant American hero" who had "served his nation proudly, as a navy fighter pilot, test pilot, and astronaut".

Mental Health Challenges Facing Homeless Parents ... - Kiefit.com

A new paper from North Carolina State University calls for more research on how to help homeless families with children who are facing mental-health problems, as well as changes in how shelters are treating these families. "We wanted to lay out the specific mental-health challenges facing homeless parents and children living in shelters and transitional housing," says Dr. Mary Haskett, a professor of psychology at NC State and co-author of the paper...

Typhoon Tembin sweeps across Taiwan

Typhoon Tembin swept across southern Taiwan Friday, toppling trees and ripping off rooftops after thousands of people were evacuated to avoid a repeat of a deadly storm three years ago.

Tembin, characterised as a "severe" typhoon by the Hong Kong Observatory, hit before dawn and ground its way across Taiwan's southern tip before moving out to sea again, Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau said.

Fallen tree trunks covered roads in the south, rocks loosened by torrential rain fell from mountainsides, and in the coastal village of Tawu a number of rooftops were reportedly blown off by strong winds.

In towns along the rugged east coast, some 6,500 people were evacuated and schools and businesses shut down as communities braced for the typhoon to hit, but Tembin made landfall further south than expected.

There were no reports of casualties, but farmers said their livelihoods had been badly affected by the powerful weather system.

"This is more serious than we thought it would be," said Chen Yue-zi, a fruit and nut grower near the eastern city of Taitung, as he looked at his orchard, littered with trees toppled by heavy winds overnight.

The weather bureau said the typhoon appeared to have lost strength as it passed over Taiwan's mountainous southern terrain, and was now moving out to sea on a looping path.

But Central Weather Bureau forecaster Lo Ya-yin said the typhoon, currently in the narrow strait between Taiwan and the Chinese mainland, could still circle back.

"Today and tomorrow will be a crucial time. It may come back. It's determined by a multitude of factors," she told AFP.

As the storm bore down, police set up roadblocks in several locations leading to areas considered in danger of landslides, only letting through those on urgent business.

"It could have been worse if we hadn't closed parts of the highway last night," said an official with the highway administration, who gave his name as Wang.

The evacuations were ordered in risk areas along Taiwan's coastline as authorities attempt to prevent a repeat of an enormously destructive typhoon which hit three years ago.

Typhoon Morakot killed about 600 people in August 2009, most of them buried in huge landslides in the south.

A senior military official told AFP Thursday that authorities had learned lessons from Morakot, when they "had not done enough evacuations beforehand."

Taiwan's military had ordered 50,000 soldiers to be on standby, ready to move out and assist in disaster prevention efforts.

It also deployed amphibious armored vehicles in the south for rescue efforts in case of flooding.

More than 1,800 Chinese fishermen recruited to work on Taiwan fishing boats were asked to seek safety in ports along the coast, with 800 of them placed in on-shore shelters, the Council of Agriculture said.

Tembin was preceded by heavy downpours, with Pingtung receiving 251 millimetres (10 inches) of rain in the 30 hours prior to dawn on Friday, the weather bureau said.

Settler violence against Palestinians raises alarm in Israel

JERUSALEM ? The vicious nighttime beating of an Arab teenager by a mob of Jewish youths in a downtown square here last week has prompted arrests, condemnation and soul-searching about the depths of ethnic hatred in Israeli society.

But human rights activists and analysts say an act of violence against Palestinians that occurred hours earlier in a much different context ? a stretch of highway in an Israeli-controlled section of the occupied West Bank ? has become a test case for an equally grave problem: rising attacks by radical Israeli settlers on Palestinians and their property.

Israeli authorities have made no arrests in the Aug. 16 daylight firebombing of a Palestinian taxi, which left the driver and four members of a Palestinian family so severely burned that they remain hospitalized, but they have said they suspect Jewish extremists. The incident was denounced by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who vowed to find the perpetrators, and Deputy Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon, who called the beating and firebombing ?terrorist attacks.? That description echoed the U.S. State Department, which described settler violence as terrorism in a recent report.

The condemnations reflect growing alarm among Israeli officials and international observers over escalating vandalism of Palestinian mosques and property, assaults against Palestinians and attacks on the Israeli military. Extremist settlers claim some of the acts as ?price tag,? a campaign of retaliation against Palestinian violence or Israeli policies they view as limiting their efforts to claim what they see as their biblical birthright.

Public outrage over attacks on the military last year prompted Israeli authorities to take new measures, including temporarily expelling several radical settlers from the West Bank, but critics say they are not enough. That message was echoed in a European Union report this year, which noted that settler attacks on Palestinians tripled between 2009 and 2011.

Researchers say most of these attacks take place in Area C, the sections of the West Bank that are solely controlled by Israel, and where Israeli security forces are responsible for protecting both Palestinians and Israelis.

?It is paramount that the Israeli authorities enforce the rule of law in the territories and protect Palestinian civilians in the territories,? said Natan Sachs, a Brookings Institution fellow who co-authored a new Foreign Affairs magazine article on settler terror. ?It is especially important because right now the peace process is deadlocked.... If we?re expecting many years to come of a similar situation, then the conditions on the ground become more important, not less.?

Military and police officials say they investigate all crimes with equal vigor and that their efforts thwart many planned offenses. Mickey Rosenfeld, an Israeli police spokesman, said security in the West Bank has been boosted ?to prevent the friction? between settlers and Palestinians, who, he said, often ?provoke? attacks.

Elizabeth Cb Marsh :: Life of an Associate Interior Designer

Elizabeth CB MarshI met Elizabeth Cb Marsh during my night out to hear Houzz CEO Adi Tatarko speak.? (At the time, she, Elizabeth, was known as Elizabeth Cross-Beard and more on that in a bit.)? It was only a brief encounter initiated by friend Amanda Lopez of Style House Realty.? In it, though, I learned that Elizabeth is an Associate with one of Baltimore?s more prominent interior design firms, Jenkins Baer Associates.

It was only a tad ironic, too, when I told Elizabeth that we (Building Moxie) had previously published a post featuring JBA Principal, Jay Jenkins.? More so ? when I learned that it was actually Jay Jenkins who brought Elizabeth into the folds of the firm.? With a background in architectural design, she was initially hired as one of Jenkins? design assistants, some seven years earlier (and more on that in a bit).

Surprising really, but my next comment that night didn?t even seem to phase her. ?I started, ?Aren?t you a little . . . young ???? Her response, as if she had heard that question before, ? ?Well, Yes . . . I do get that?.?

And yet, she still answered my email when I followed up the next day. Ha! I mean ? Okay, we did, as it turned out, have a sorta shared interest.? Elizabeth, it seems, was a one-time blogger, and you can find much of her work (with the Examiner) here >> http://www.examiner.com/interior-decorating-in-baltimore/elizabeth-cross-beard.

2nd floor contemporary media roomStoked still on finding a fellow blogger, this then led to a discussion about how we might capitalize on this shared background.? Guest Post? Interview?? And I had mentioned to her already how I had hoped to expand my ? ?portfolio? this year.? It was in that early discussion that Elizabeth then pointed me to this article >> Living Large. It, if you clicked, appeared in Home & Design (a leading regional magazine focused on Architecture & Fine Interiors), and it, that article, featured one of Elizabeth?s beautifully executed spaces.? For me, it was the exact point at which I got an idea.

As we talked some more, I figured maybe we could do a little better than a stock shelter mag-type piece (and, of course, not a knock on the work of Home & Design).? From this, though, and for the month of May, we decided that once a week (every Wednesday) I would email her a set of questions, and she in turn would respond by the end of the day.? We would work to come up with a kinda ?Month in the Life of an Associate Interior Designer? . . . thing.

I was especially intrigued, as this dialog unfolded, by ? What it?s like working at/with a large interior design firm.

It?s important to now note that since we started our project, Elizabeth has again been featured in a well-known regional magazine. Chesapeake Home + Living and just earlier this month.? Check out the wonderful story and gallery here >> Style in a Small D.C. Apartment.

In our first emails, towards the end of April, Elizabeth gave me a ten thousand foot view of some of the projects she had been working on at the time ? a big three.? Three projects we began playfully calling All About the Dogs, Bach Pad Redo & Long Distance D?cor.? (I?ll talk a little bit about some of these in the next of this series.)

Small Stylish DC Living Room Chesapeake Home

source :: Chesapeake Home + Living

But as our conversations continued, it became clear quickly that her work was not limited to just these three, or really, any set number of projects.? On any given day, it seemed, Elizabeth would be in communication about, checking selections for, or just in general, she was in various stages with/for say six to eight different clients slash prospects.

AND ?. . . as if that all weren?t enough, Elizabeth, when we were chatting, was in the midst of finalizing the details for her June wedding.? (Yep and hence the name change.)? Imagine it, juggling that with this normal workload.? Ha! And I do hope this is fair to say, but it was not always easy.

These circumstances in fact, for me, provided good backdrop to the discussion we were having above about personalized service, and the attention she strives to provide for each of her own clients ?always.

*******

Jenkins Baer Associates brass ringerThis post is the first of four, in which I/we discuss working with clients, working in Baltimore, and finding and defining style. I/we discuss the practical challenges and the management of projects, business and billing, as well as and as promised ? what it is like working in a large, well-known interior design firm.? (Oh, and yes, we might even talk a little bit about design(s) too.)

To find out more or to work with Elizabeth, here is her page on the JBA website.? You can also find her on Houzz.? (A site that both happens to be a BMoxie sponsor ? thank you, but also a site that Elizabeth credits with helping her to connect with new and potential clients.)

Today, I will leave you with an overview of Jenkins Baer (pronounced ?bear,? like the one that can eat you).? In Elizabeth?s words:

A top interior design firm in Baltimore, Jenkins Baer Associates was founded by Alexander Baer over 30 years ago.? By the time, Jay Jenkins took over as owner ? the firm was already recognized as a top high-end residential firm.? Jay has continued the growth of Jenkins Baer Associates.

The most unique aspect about Jenkins Baer is the mix of amazingly talented associates who work for themselves under the umbrella of the firm.? A potential new client really has a variety of design(er) styles to choose from.? It?s the farther thing possible from a ?one look? design firm.

Thanks for reading and hope you can stop back for updates to this series. dl: I might be shopping the remaining posts around for publishing elsewhere. Hit me on the side if this might be something you are interested in. Thanks again, and thank you Elizabeth. ~jb

NASA Kicks Off Mock Asteroid Mission

NASA began a mock asteroid mission this week in Houston to test out technologies that would allow humans to explore space rocks on future missions.

The 10-day simulation is part of NASA's Research and Technology Studies program, known as RATS, which has been held every year since 1998. It usually occurs in remote desert locations, often earning it the nickname Desert RATS. But RATS 2012 is being held at the Johnson Space Center (JSC), which houses tools and simulators that would be difficult to transfer to the field, NASA officials said.

The crewmembers will test out NASA's prototype for its next generation of Space Exploration Vehicles, or SEVs, on a mock mission to the?asteroid Itokawa. In an Aug. 21 blog post for NASA, RATS crewmember Trevor Graff, a planetary geologist, explained that the vehicle sits in front of a large screen displaying the simulated asteroid. The virtual rock draws on data from Japan's Hayabusa mission to Itokawa and "looks and moves just like the real thing."

"This extremely realistic simulation allows us to fly around, approach, and anchor to the asteroid, all while monitoring our flight controls, propellant usage and many other factors," Graff wrote. "Once we approach or anchor to the asteroid, one or more of us will perform a simulated spacewalk, also known as an EVA (Extra-Vehicular Activity)."

The crew can carry out a virtual spacewalk in two ways. Either they can put on special glasses in JSC's virtual reality lab, which provides an "immersive environment" with real time graphics and motion simulators, NASA officials said. Or the crewmembers can get strapped into NASA's Active Response Gravity Offload System (ARGOS), which uses a crane to simulate the weightlessness astronauts would feel while exploring an asteroid's surface.

The program also seeks to answer some practical questions about putting humans on a near-Earth asteroid, such as how astronauts would live in the SEV.

"Once we were done with our flying tasks, we settled in for our evening tasks. That involved making a freeze dried dinner, setting up our cycle and exercising, and filling out a bunch of data sheets," crewmember David Coan, an engineer with United Space Alliance, wrote in another NASA blog post after the first day of the program. "Exercising in the confined quarters was challenging, and we mostly stuck with using the cycle. We finished the night by configuring our bunks for sleeping, and shutting things down for the night."

NASA to Launch Mission to Earth's Radiation Belt Friday After Delay

NASA has delayed the launch of twin spacecraft to study Earth's harsh radiation belts this week by 24 hours in order to iron out a possible glitch with the mission's rocket, officials announced today (Aug. 20).

The agency's Radiation Belt Storm Probes (RBSP) mission was slated to blast off early Thursday (Aug. 23) from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket. But on Aug. 18, technicians detected an anomaly in another Atlas 5 during tests at ULA's Alabama factory, officials said. The mission will now launch on Friday morning, Aug. 24, with the window for liftoff opening at 4:07 a.m. EDT (0807 GMT).

The tested rocket engine "experienced an anomaly in the actuator system that moves the engine for steering and flight," Tim Dunn, launch director at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, told reporters today. ??

"The combined ULA and NASA technical team jointly agreed yesterday that additional testing and assessment is required to verify the same anomalous condition is not present on RBSP's launch vehicle engine hardware," Dunn added. [Video: Probes to Study Radiation Threat to Astronauts]

ULA and NASA officials expressed confidence that everything would be sorted out in time for Friday's launch, which is currently scheduled for 4:07 a.m. EDT (0807 GMT), with a 20-minute window.

"We think we understand what the issue is," said Vern Thorp, ULA's program manager for NASA missions. "The testing that we're doing today will build up some separation between this engine and the engine in the factory where we saw the issue."

"Overall, we're pretty optimistic that we know what's happening," Thorp added.

The weather may be more of an issue, with thunderstorms later this week perhaps leaving Cape Canaveral's skies too cloudy for liftoff Friday morning. Officials are currently projecting a 40 percent chance of a weather-related scrub.

The $686 million RBSP mission aims to launch twin spacecraft to study the two Van Allen radiation belts, where trillions of charged particles have been trapped by Earth's magnetic field.

The inner belt usually extends from about 1,000 miles above Earth to 8,000 miles up (1,600 to 13,000 kilometers), while the outer one runs from around 12,000 to 25,000 miles (19,000 to 40,000 km). The belts are dynamic, however, and can expand greatly during solar storms.

Though the two belts were discovered in 1958 and can exert large effects on satellites, they remain mysterious today, researchers have said.

The heavily armored RBSP probes will fly through the Van Allen belts in disparate orbits, mapping out the density of charged particles there. Launching two spacecraft rather than one will allow researchers to determine whether differences in measured radiation levels indicate changes across space or time.

The two-year RBSP mission should improve scientists' understanding of how space weather affects satellites in Earth orbit, leading to better-designed and more efficient spacecraft down the road, team members have said.

"This mission is all about helping everybody understand what's really out there that they need to deal with," said Rick Fitzgerald, RBSP project manager at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Md.
