Iolo System Mechanic 10.7

If sluggish PC performance is giving you the blues, you'd do well to invest in the $39.95 Iolo System Mechanic 10.7, a utility suite?designed to blow the virtual dust out of worn machines by repairing the registry, defragging the hard drive, and eliminating files that stymie snappy performance. Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 serves up a host of new features not present in previous builds we've reviewed, including Designated Drivers which manages drivers in an attempt to keep your PC problem free. All in all, Iolo System Mechanic remains one of the best PC tune-up utilities around, as it digs deep, cleans up PCs well, and offers informative, easy-to-understand help about the problems that plague computers.

System Requirements and Interface
Compatible with Windows 7, Vista, and XP PCs, Iolo System Mechanics 10 requires just 30MB of disk space, 256MB of RAM, and an Internet connection for activating the license.?Unlike most PC tune-up utilities such as TuneUp Utilities 2012 (4 stars, $49.95), which limit you on the number of licenses, Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 lets you install the software on any number of computers provided that it's not for business purposes?a welcome feature in the age of the multi-PC household.

The interface looks very similar to previous entries in the Iolo System Mechanic family with the familiar red-white-and-blue color scheme. Like the previous version of System Mechanic, this version has several options in the left pane (Overview, Problems, Automated Tasks, Anti-malware, Firewall, All-in-One Tools, Individual Tools) the content of which appears in the main pane when clicked.

Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 also installs a useful widget on the desktop that gives you at-a-glance PC health and security readings. From this widget, you can launch any number of Iolo System Mechanic 10.7's features to begin the clean up process.

The Clean Up Process
The Overview screen opens by default when the program is launched, and it's where the "Analyze Now" button lives. Clicking the arrow next to it opened drop-down box that presented two choices: "Perform Quick Analysis" and "Perform Deep Analysis." The former is a one- to two-minute scan that looks for the most common PC problems; the latter is a five- to seven-minute scan that checks for all problems. Considering the heavy use that our test laptop had received, I went with the second option. Approximately six minutes later finished the scan and uncovered over 2,000 problems.

Beneath the reading appeared a highlighted message: "Boost speed and stability by removing redundant programs with CRUDD Remover." CRUDD is Iolo's acronym for Commonly Redundant or Unnecessary Decelerators and Destabilizers?fancy talk for duplicate programs that clog your system. The idea behind CRUDD Remover is to eliminate those extra programs as each application install theoretically slows your PC's performance a bit. After running CRUDD Remover, 9 problems were detected on the PC, which were explained in wonderful detail on the "Problems" screen.

What I found truly cool was that Iolo System Mechanic 10 didn't just serve up a number?it provided blurbs that explained why these problems negatively impact performance. I checked off all nine problems, clicked the "Repair All" button, and performed the required reboot. Performing another deep scan revealed that all but one problem was fixed, and that straggler was one beyond Iolo System Mechanic 10.7's scope: No installed anti-malware program was detected on the system.

I also ran Iolo's patent-pending Program Accelerator, which smartly re-aligns all of a program's dependent files on the hard drive. It's touted as being better than disk defragmenters, which can blindly compact and separate files even more. Program Accelerator took approximately 15 minutes for to work its magic, and, when it was done, I discovered that it had re-aligned over 30,000 files and eliminated nearly 100 file fragments. Four further files were defragmented after a restart.

Performance Improvements
I tested Iolo System Mechanic 10.7's ability to whip a PC back into shape by performing three tests?running the Geekbench system performance tool, measuring boot times, and transferring a 1.1GB folder of mixed media to external storage?before and after running the software to compare the computer's potency. Each test was run three times and averaged. Before AVG PC Tuneup 2011 scrubbed the system, the 2-GHz Intel Core i7 X990 Style-Note notebook with 4GB of RAM, and an 80GB Intel SSD drive achieved a 5,903 Geekbench score, booted in 50.3 seconds, and transferred the 1.1GB folder in 40.5 seconds.

After using Iolo System Mechanic 10.7, the system saw the most improved performance of all the tune-up utilities tested: The GeekBench score rose to 6064 (better than TuneUp Utilities 2012's 6045); the boot time decreased to just 37.1 seconds (on a par with TuneUp Utilities 2012's 37 seconds). The file transfer speed dropped to 40.8 seconds (swifter than TuneUp Utilities 2012's 41.1 seconds).?The overall system performance was incredibly fast and snappy?windows and menus opened in a blink.

Designated Drivers and NetBooster
Designated Drivers, a new feature to version 10.7, helps you find and install safe drivers for your computer?drivers that have been tested and certified by Microsoft. I liked that this driver utility is a part of Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 and not a separate application (which is the case with SlimWare Utilities SlimCleaner and SlimWare Utilities DiverUpdate). Designated Drivers found two driver updates for my PC, but Slimware Utilities DriverUpdate found a whopping 74.

The NetBooster internet booster is designed to stabilize and speed up your internet connection by optimizing settings?Iolo states that it's beneficial to run it before playing Web-connected video games and assists in opening Web pages faster. Cracked.com loaded in 5.9 seconds before running NetBooster, which decreased slightly (after clearing the browser's Internet history, rebooting, and activating the tool) to 5.3 seconds?a marginal increase.

Should You Use Iolo System Mechanic 10.7?
The answer is a resounding yes. Iolo System Mechanic 10.7 has simple interface, easy-to-understand problem definitions, and a deep array of performance-enhancing tools that produce excellent all-around scores. Iolo System Mechanic remains the PC tune-up-utility champion.

Why Sports is Good Training for Entrepreneurs

By Cynthia Kocialski

I noticed that many successful entrepreneurs played sports. Does sports training matter to budding entrepreneurs? What skills do athletes learn that would benefit a new business owner and entrepreneur?

The Intent to Win

In sports, the link between progressing in a sport is directly related to your track record of winning. Athletes know that when they step on the playing field, they must have the intent to win and must live in the moment ? for the next few minutes or hours their world is only the game and what must be done to win it.

I see many young entrepreneurs that want to start the next Google or Amazon. They are very talented people, but they don?t have the intent to win. Many entrepreneurs believe it?s about effort. If they try hard and long enough then they will eventually succeed at their business. But that?s not true. Who hires an attorney who loses all his cases, but tried his best? Who engages a physician that never cures their patients of their ills? Find me an investor who will back an entrepreneur whose previous companies have all failed? Athletes understand the importance of a consistent level of excellence and winning.

Performance Under Pressure

Athletes learn to perform under pressure. While there is the pressure to get good grades in school, it?s not as intense as athletics. If you don?t do well in math, you may get a B or C for a grade, but you will still move to the next level. If you don?t do so well in a season you may never have the opportunity to play the sport again.

Even in practice, athletes are under pressure to perform. They have to jump so high or spin so fast by a certain date, or their lack of progress becomes detrimental. If a sports coach knows an athlete is capable of doing something, but just can?t get it, there will be no sympathy from the coach. The coach will push the athlete to perform.

In order for a company to grow, it must bring in sales so it can pay the staff and reinvest for the future. Without that external pressure to perform, companies remain marginal.? In sports, there?s the coach. In a business, it?s the mentors, advisors, businesses coaches, and shareholders that can provide the accountability necessary to push the company to succeed.

Every Sport Is a Team Sport

Your team matters. Even for individual athletes like Apolo Ono, Michelle Kwan, or Shaun White, it?s still about the team hidden behind the curtain. Athletes learn to build the team that can get them the best overall performance.

I see this with new start-up companies. More often than not, the team is a random collection of individuals. Or the team is lopsided with half the functional areas empty and the other half overstaffed. Seriously, what would happen if the offensive team on a football team fielded 5 quarterbacks on the field but no wide receivers? Learning how to evaluate who you need on your team and how to build an effective team is imperative for a business because no company has reached great heights without a team of employees.

This is important for those solo entrepreneurs or fledgling businesses to learn because it?s easy to become overwhelmed and distracted with mundane work that?s necessary, but doesn?t help reach the end objective.? They shouldn?t spend their time on the most impactful tasks and leave the rest for a new employee or outsource the work.

Knowing and Learning from the Competition

Athletes are more than just aware of their competitors. They study and analyze them. They learn from them. Athletes know their competitors? strengths and weakness. Athletes also know how their abilities compare to their competitors.

Entrepreneurs perform a competitive analysis of their industry or market. They focus on what their competitors? weaknesses are. However, the usually neglect to study their competitors? strengths as thoroughly. And rarely do start-ups look at themselves through the eyes of their competitors. If they were sitting in a competitive analysis meeting held in their competitors? offices, what would the competitors be saying about their start-up?

Performance Reviews

One comment I hear from athletes is how American corporations manage to compete with their performance review systems is mystifying. In athletics, the athlete gets daily feedback from their coaches on how they are doing and what they need to improve. This allows the athlete to improve faster. In corporations, employees are given annual or semi-annual performance reviews.? How far would our athletes go if their coaches only told them how they were doing every six or twelve months? Not far, I bet.

Finding the Right Goal

There have been many athletes that started in one sport, only to abandon it and reach great success in another. Most athletes are physically adept; they can play or do most sports well. Succeeding is more than just ?doing well?. It?s though the act of competing and allowing themselves to be compared to others ? both good and bad ? that stops them from blindly pursing a goal without it necessarily being the right goal.

Here?s a way this gets translated in entrepreneurship. An entrepreneur starts a company with a product concept. First misstep is when the entrepreneur squirrels the team away, develops the product in isolation, and launches the product, only to find out that 7 billion people in the world don?t care at all. The start-up waited too long before ?competing? for the customers? attention and budget.

The second problem is when the start-up pursues the product concept and business model to the bitter end, never changing what they are doing. They are doing something well, but not well enough to thrive and succeed. Studies show successful start-ups change course 1 to 2 times before finding the right product and business model. In this case, the entrepreneur doggedly pursues the original goal, assuming the goal is correct.

Investors talk about their portfolio companies and they will say, ?It?s not going well. The team is not bold enough or aggressive enough to win in the marketplace.? You must know how to think, not just what to think. Competitive environments aren?t stable, they?re dynamic and you have to be able to function and adapt in ambiguous situations, and do so by a deadline.

Sports Psychology

Athletes are trained to visual the goal. There are no obstacles between them and their objective. They are also trained to look at themselves in the mirror in the morning and ask, ?What am I going to accomplish today?? It?s not a matter of they ?want? or ?can? do something. It?s a much stronger thought psychologically; it?s they ?will? do something.

New butt injection drama: Fake syringe attack

By Hank Tester and Brian Hamacher, NBCMiami.com

An attack with a fake syringe on a Spanish-language talk show Wednesday night was just the latest chapter in the South Florida "bad butt" injection drama.

Corey Eubank, 40, was appearing on Telemundo's "Cristina" show at the Blue Dolphin Studios in Doral when he was hit above his left eye by a prop syringe thrown by a woman, a Doral Police report released Thursday said.

'I?m not doing well at all. I am agitated. This is beginning to be life-threatening," Eubank told NBC Miami. "It?s gone way too far. This is really frustrating me.?

See video, read original story at NBCMiami.com

Police say Eubank is a man, but attorney Jim Lewis says she presents herself as a woman.

Eubank and 30-year-old Oneal Ron Morris were arrested in November and charged with practicing medicine without a license after victims alleged Morris had injected their legs and buttocks with a mixture that included Fix-a-Flat, cement and super glue.

Police say Eubank was Morris' accomplice, though she denies that claim.

According to the police report, Eubank said the show was taping when she was attacked by Brunetta Brown, the mother of Shaquanda Brown, one of Morris' and Eubank's alleged victims.

Video footage showed Eubank sitting on a chair before a member of the audience made her way to the stage. Security guards quickly moved in to separate Eubank from her alleged attackers as all hell broke loose.

Eubank told police Brunetta Brown threw the syringe ? which didn't have a needle in it?? at her, hitting her in the forehead, the report said.

Brown denied throwing the syringe at Eubank but admitted to getting into an altercation with Eubank, the report said.

No arrests were made but the incident remains under investigation, the report said.

Eubank's attorney Gabriela Novo, who was on stage translating for her, said the show assured them beforehand that "they would be ready ? this will not get out of hand."

But it did, and the syringe, after hitting Eubank across the eyebrow, hit Novo on her neck, she said.

"They just came at us. They just wanted to fight," Novo said. "When they stampeded onto the stage, they just grabbed all the props on the table and threw it at Corey and me.?

Lewis said "the victim began referring to my client as a faggot," and that things disintegrated when she stood up aggressively and approached Eubank.

?For about a minute and a half, it was a very scary situation, to the point the victim and families came at Ms. Novo and I. We felt very threatened," Lewis said.

He said the show did not provide enough security and that he would be filing a restraining order against both Browns.

Both Morris and Eubank are out on bond and have pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.

Nintendo sees profit next year, but shares tumble (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Nintendo President Satoru Iwata dismissed the idea that the age of the dedicated handheld games device was over and said he aimed to return the company to substantial profit in 2012/13, after it warned of its first ever operating loss this year.

Shares in Kyoto-based Nintendo Co Ltd tumbled nearly 8 percent to an 8-year low after it slashed its full-year guidance for the third time in 6 months, and analysts said the potential market for its products was shrinking rapidly.

The creator of the Super Mario franchise reported a sharp drop in quarterly earnings, as its sales of its games devices that have dominated the industry for years were hit by competing gadgets such as Apple Inc's iPhone.

Iwata said he blamed the dismal results on a mixture of strategic errors and the difficult business environment created by the strong yen and European consumer gloom.

"Nintendo is facing its worst results since it entered the games business. What matters now is how Nintendo can make a profit from next year onwards, even under these harsh conditions," he told an analysts' meeting.

The maker of the Wii home console and DS handheld games is struggling to compete as sales of more versatile smartphones and tablets boom, and poor sales forced it to slash the price of its much anticipated 3DS handheld game device in August.

"The profitability of 3DS hardware was the biggest issue for earnings this financial year, but it looks like we'll be able to resolve the problem we've been having with losses on the 3DS during the first half of the next financial year," Iwata said.

"We should be able to generate a large profit by getting rid of losses on the 3DS hardware, if we can substantially lift sales of software."

A Nintendo spokesman said the company expected to stop losing money on each 3DS sold, thanks to economies of scale and changes to the internal design of the device.

But Nintendo shares closed down 4.1 percent at 10,310 yen, after falling to 9,910 yen shortly after the market opened, their lowest since February 2004. It has lost nearly 60 percent of its value since the start of last year.

"The company's core handheld business is under assault from smartphones, iPods and tablets, and we see competition for consumer wallet share continuing," said analyst Michael Pachter of U.S.-based Wedbush Securities in a research note.

"The fact is that a significant share of Nintendo's market is gone forever, and we don't expect the company to come up with a practical strategy to stem the declines in sales we have forecast," he added. "We do not expect the company's fortunes to turn in FY 13."

NEW HOME CONSOLE BY CHRISTMAS

Nintendo said on Thursday its third-quarter operating profit fell 61 percent to 40.9 billion yen ($529 million) and it forecast an operating loss of 45 billion yen for the financial year to March 31, far worse than analysts' average forecast of a 4.2 billion yen loss.

Sales of its 3DS slumped shortly after launch in February, forcing the company to slash prices just six months later and take a loss on each device, something it had prided itself on avoiding in the past.

Even so, Nintendo cut its full-year 3DS sales forecast to 14 million from 16 million, while sales of its ageing Wii and the previous generation DS have fallen faster than expected.

It also faces stiff competition in the home console market from Sony Corp's Move and Microsoft Corp's Kinect, and some analysts say the console market may dry up over the next several years as cloud gaming takes off.

Nintendo will launch its Wii U console, a successor to the phenomenally successful Wii, in Japan, the United States, Australia and Europe at the year-end, after showing a final version at the E3 games show in June.

But Masayuki Otani, chief market analyst at Securities Japan, said the market was unlikely to have high hopes for the Wii U, although the slide in the share price may be reaching an end.

"The pace of the share price decline is easing and it may be near a floor, but it would be hard to predict a rapid recovery," he said.

Iwata said a leap in 3DS sales after the launch of a raft of software late last year showed that dedicated handheld games gadgets still had a future.

"I believe we have disproved the extreme theory that there is no longer a demand for handheld devices," he said.

Sundance doc traces Simon's 'Graceland' hit album (AP)

PARK CITY, Utah ? Paul Simon recalls his return to South Africa like a family reunion ? musical brothers getting back together after decades apart.

The trip last summer to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his "Graceland" album was a far more joyous occasion than some of his earlier travels on behalf of the record.

The Sundance Film Festival documentary "Under African Skies" chronicles the creation of "Graceland," its overnight success and the furor it caused as critics accused Simon of impeding progress to abolish South Africa's system of racial segregation known as apartheid.

Simon said he was surprised by protests that sprang up on his "Graceland" tour in the 1980s. But looking back, he said the album and tour with South African musicians raised awareness that helped end apartheid in the 1990s.

"Once I saw it had an immediate acceptance and that people loved it and had great affection for the music, I thought that the tour and the album were going to be a very effective way of showing just how evil apartheid was," Simon said in an interview alongside "Under African Skies" director Joe Berlinger.

The film shows Simon's South African musical colleagues enjoying their first taste of success outside their oppressed nation on the "Graceland" tour. But critics charged that the tour violated a United Nations cultural ban meant to pressure South Africa's white minority into doing away with government policies of segregation against blacks.

There were protests and even bomb threats, resulting in tight security as the tour progressed around the world.

Even today, there is lingering bitterness against Simon. "Under African Skies" includes a sometimes-uneasy exchange last summer between him and Dali Tambo, the son of African National Congress leader Oliver Tambo and the founder of Artists Against Apartheid. Dali Tambo had remained a harsh critic of Simon.

The joint interview arranged by filmmaker Berlinger helped clear the air between Simon and Tambo, who ended their meeting with a warm hug on camera.

That meeting was part of Berlinger's aim to examine both the musical origins of "Graceland" but also its unpleasant political fallout.

"I made it clear I didn't want a puff piece, a Paul Simon puff piece, and he didn't want a Paul Simon puff piece," Berlinger said. "We established that we're going to do an honest exploration of these issues and also go deeply into how this music was made, which, to me, is actually the more interesting part of the film.

"The political story is relevant and has resonance in today's world as well, but how this album was made, the dissection of that music and that achievement to me was as interesting, or more so, than the political story."

The film traces the creation of the album, from early recording sessions Simon did in South Africa to capture the raw material for many of the songs, to a London studio session with vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo, to an early performance on "Saturday Night Live" that enchanted the audience months before "Graceland" was released.

"Under African Skies" also follows Simon on his return to South Africa last summer, when he and musicians from the album reunited for a performance.

Simon had a gracious welcome there, reminiscent of a trip back to South Africa he took a few years after the "Graceland" tour, when apartheid had ended and South Africa's new president, Nelson Mandela, invited him to come and perform.

Mandela's invitation amounted to the "official announcement that was nothing about `Graceland' that the ANC saw as harming the cause. In fact, the opposite," Simon said. "We all felt particularly honored to even meet Nelson Mandela. I think of him as one of the great, great leaders of the 20th century. One of the great teachers. To be in his presence actually was extraordinary. We felt great about it."

Memorial service to cap 3-day mourning for Paterno (AP)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? A capacity crowd of 12,000 filed into Penn State's basketball arena Thursday for the school's final tribute to Joe Paterno.

Among those finding their seats as video boards flashed a smiling image of the coach ? Paterno's last team and new Ohio State coach Urban Meyer.

Paterno's death on Sunday from lung cancer at age 85 came less than three months after his stunning ouster as head coach in the wake of child sex-abuse charges against a retired assistant. But this week, thousands of alumni, fans, students and former players in Happy Valley are remembering Paterno for his record-setting career, his love for the school and his generosity.

Small clusters of mourners continued to visit Paterno's statue outside the school's football stadium hours before the memorial.

Sharon Winter, a 1963 graduate and long-time season ticket holder from Wernersville, dabbed tears from her eyes as she looked at the hundreds of items that well-wishers since Paterno's death.

"If you haven't lived it, you can't explain it," said Winter, who, with her husband Carl, keeps an apartment in State College. "We never knew the place without Joe. He's always been a part of our lives and who we are."

Many Penn Staters found themselves reflecting on Paterno's impact and the road ahead.

"What's Joe's legacy? The answer, is his legacy is us," former NFL and Nittany Lions receiver Jimmy Cefalo said Wednesday before Paterno's funeral. Cefalo is scheduled to be one of the speakers at the tribute called "A Memorial for Joe" at the arena across the street from Beaver Stadium ? the place Paterno helped turned into a college football landmark.

Paterno's son, former Nittany Lions quarterback coach Jay Paterno, also is expected to speak at the memorial, which will cap three days of public mourning for Paterno. Viewings were held Tuesday and Wednesday morning, before the funeral and burial service for Paterno on Wednesday afternoon at the campus interfaith center where family members attended church services.

Cefalo, who played for Penn State in the `70s, said it will be the most difficult speech of his life. But he offered a hint of what he might say.

"Generations of these young people from coal mines and steel towns who he gave a foundation to," Cefalo said. "It's not (the Division I record) 409 wins, it's not two national championships, and it's not five-time coach of the year (awards). It's us."

The memorial Thursday is expected to feature a speaker for each decade of Paterno's coaching career, according to Charles V. Pittman, a former player who said he will represent the 1960s.

Pittman said he was in Paterno's first class and was the coach's first All-America running back. Pittman's son later played for the Nittany Lions as well, making them the first father-son pair to play for Paterno, Pittman said. They wrote a book about their experiences called "Playing for Paterno."

Pittman said he spoke with Paterno two or three times a year. In 2002, the coach chided Pittman for moving to South Bend, Ind. ? home of rival Notre Dame ? to take a job as a newspaper executive.

"He called me a traitor," said Pittman, senior vice president for publishing at Schurz Communications Inc., an Indiana-based company that owns television and radio stations and newspapers, and a member of the Board of Directors of The Associated Press.

Pittman attended Wednesday's funeral, which also drew other notable guests including former NFL players Franco Harris and Matt Millen; and former defensive coordinator Tom Bradley. All were at Thursday's event, too.

Reporters can now bring gadgets to House chamber

Tuesday's State of the Union address will be the first time reporters will be able to bring their electronic devices into the House gallery, according to a post in Roll Call. Photography and video won't be allowed, but if all goes well, electronic reporting will be permitted going forward.

There are, of course, a number of concerns: Reporters can't make calls, and phones must be completely silent ??even vibrate mode is prohibited. And reporters will be "closely monitored" to ensure there are no egregious (and potentially embarrassing) infractions.

The experiment will continue after the State of the Union. The House of Representatives will allow reporters to bring gadgets for the duration of the current session of Congress, and will evaluate whether or not to continue after that.?

For more on the new rule, and the House's on-again, off-again relationship with electronic gadgets, check out the Roll Call piece.

Be sure to catch the State of the Union tonight at 9 p.m. ET, right here at NBC Politics on msnbc.com.

Mark Zuckerberg added his touch to a graffiti wall at Facebook's new headquarters. In the video above, graffiti artist David Choe, who was commissioned to paint the wall, incorporates a stick figure painted by the Facebook founder into a mohawked trollish creature wearing a wife beater with a raised fist. It's quite a transformation.

Zuckerberg needs to practice first, admitting: "I've actually never spray painted anything."

South Carolina: 9 takeaways (Politico)

In the end, South Carolina wasn?t even close.

Newt Gingrich?s commanding victory over Mitt Romney in the first-in-the-South primary shook up the GOP nomination battle as the race heads to Florida ? and ensures an epic Sunshine State showdown.

South Carolina Primary Live Coverage

Winners & Losers in 60 seconds

Below are POLITICO?s nine takeaways from the results:

1) Romney may not realize he?s having a near-death experience

Maybe that will change by the time Romney hits the Sunday morning shows. But his concession speech in Columbia bore few hallmarks of a candidate in the midst of a moment of self-awareness after a humiliating defeat in a state with a perfect track record of picking the eventual GOP nominee.

Without naming him, Romney slammed Newt Gingrich for using ?weapons of the left? to attack him in the primary, and said those ?weapons? will be used against the eventual nominee in the general election.

He overlooked a few things.

Over the course of the last several days, Romney?s hurdles have been largely of his own making ? thanks to his halting and muddled responses, stretched out over two debates, over whether he would release his tax returns and then over how many years? worth he?d put out.

It?s an issue that Romney needs to resolve quickly with a simple answer, one that he sticks to repeatedly. And it?s hard to see how he now can afford to wait until April to put the returns out.

There?s another serious issue at hand: South Carolina conservatives dealt Romney a serious blow by overwhelmingly voting for Gingrich. Romney?s share of the vote, about 27 percent, is near the polling level at which he was stuck throughout much of the year. His inevitability argument has taken a major hit. His Mormonism may have played some role, but it doesn?t likely account for his margin of defeat.

Gingrich has experienced at least two near-death experiences this cycle and kept going. It?s hard to kill someone twice, and even harder to do it a third time. Gingrich is also proving to have the qualities Romney has lacked ? passion and anger, and an ability to pivot quickly.

Romney, of course, is forced to contend with a year in which the party?s base is energized against the establishment ? and he is the establishment candidate.

Strong candidates have often gone through near-death experiences ? John McCain circa 2007 comes to mind. There?s no reason Romney can?t do the same: He is still the favorite to be the nominee, and his campaign is built for a long haul.

But he needs to have standout performances in the two Florida debates this week, and he needs to turn the page on difficult questions about his wealth. He also needs to be able to take a real fight to Gingrich, and carry out the attack without faltering ? and in his own words. He is no longer, after his defeat, able to retreat behind surrogates.

Last-minute failures end Ravens' season, 23-20 (AP)

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. ? Lee Evans had victory in his hands. Billy Cundiff had a tie game on his toe.

Two chances in the final 30 seconds to keep their Super Bowl hopes alive and the Baltimore Ravens let both slip away.

Evans was stripped after briefly hauling in Joe Flacco's pass in the back right corner of the end zone and, two plays later, Cundiff pushed a 32-yard field goal attempt wide left in Sunday's AFC championship game. The New England Patriots won 23-20 and the Ravens ended their season disappointed but not disgraced.

"We're grinders," said linebacker Ray Lewis, wiping his face with a towel in the quiet Ravens locker room. "We're coming home and we're coming home with smiles. But, most importantly, when we start back training, we're coming back (ticked) off. Why wouldn't we be?"

The Ravens gave the Patriots all they could handle.

The much-maligned Flacco played one of his best games of the season. The third-ranked Baltimore defense held Tom Brady without a touchdown pass for the first time in 36 games. And the Ravens moved from their 21-yard line to a second-and-1 at the Patriots 14 with 27 seconds left.

Plenty of time to at least tie the score.

On the next play, Evans had the pass in his grasp. But Sterling Moore, a rookie free agent who was cut once by the Patriots this season, arrived just in time to knock out the ball.

"I feel like I had it, but it came out," Evans said. "I don't know how to put it into words. Honestly, it's the most disappointing part of all of this that I feel personally that I let everybody down.

"It hit me right where you would want to be hit. It was a great pass by Joe and a play not completed by me. Nobody else can take the fault."

Ravens coach John Harbaugh thought the play should have been reviewed, but because coaches can't ask for a review in the last two minutes of a half, he was powerless.

"Obviously, in that situation I thought they would look at it," he said, "but they didn't. I have not talked to anybody, didn't get a chance to, so I don't know what the explanation is on that."

But the Ravens weren't done.

On the next play, needing a yard for a first down, Flacco threw toward Dennis Pitta. Again, Moore made a late move to knock the ball away.

Still, there was a chance to send the game into overtime. And Cundiff had kicked field goals of 48 and 44 yards a week earlier in a 20-13 win over the Houston Texans. He had made 10 of 12 field goals between 30 and 39 yards this season.

Not this time.

Morgan Cox snapped, Sam Koch held. Cundiff, the All-Pro kicker in the 2010 season, swung his leg.

On the Ravens sideline, jaws dropped and heads sank. There was a look of shock that such a dependable kicker had missed such a makeable kick.

"The timing was just a little off," Cundiff said. "I'm disappointed. I let my teammates down."

His teammates didn't think so. The kick was one of dozens of plays that affected the outcome.

"Not one play won or lost this game," Lewis said. "There's no `Oh, Billy's the fault. Billy missed the (kick).' There's no freaking `Billy missed the kick.' It happened. Move on."

Linebacker Terrell Suggs is moving away from football for now. He has no plans to watch the Super Bowl.

"If I'm not playing in it, it doesn't matter to me," he said. "No matter who wins, I lose."

Flacco will move on after answering his doubters by completing 22 of 36 passes for 306 yards, his third most of the season. He had two touchdowns but threw a costly interception that Brandon Spikes caught at the Patriots 31 and returned to the 50 midway through the fourth quarter.

On the next play, though, Jimmy Smith intercepted Brady's pass in the end zone.

Baltimore drove to the Patriots 30, but on third-and-3, Rice was stuffed for a 3-yard loss. After calling a timeout, the Ravens decided to go for it on fourth-and-6 instead of having Cundiff try a tying 51-yard field goal.

But Flacco couldn't find an open receiver, throwing the ball away and giving the Patriots possession with 2:46 remaining. The defense forced a punt, and Flacco began his final drive of the season with 1:44 left, 79 yards from the end zone.

He completed five of seven passes before the oh-so-close toss to Evans.

"He played his tail off," Ravens safety Bernard Pollard said, "and for the people who keep dogging him, man, if you never played this game, shut up, shut up, you know. He played his tail off."

And his pass to Evans was right on target. The celebration on Baltimore's sideline already had started.

"If you weren't celebrating, you weren't a Raven fan," said Lewis, dressed in a brown pinstripe suit after removing his uniform for the last time this season. "That's the irony of sports. It's a game of inches."

Inches that make all the difference between a chance for a championship and a promise for next season.

"We fell 15 seconds from having it," Suggs said, "so, please believe, it won't happen again."

Britain OKs television ads for abortion clinics

LONDON (AP) ? Britain's broadcast advertising body has given the go-ahead for private abortion clinics to advertise their services on television, angering those who say that the move desensitizes the public to the practice.

The Broadcast Committee of Advertising Practice said late Friday there was no justification for barring private clinics that offer post-pregnancy services, including abortions, from advertising on television. Nonprofit post-pregnancy services are already allowed to advertise on television, and their for-profit counterparts are allowed to advertise in all other media.

The organization's spokesman, Matt Wilson, said that "there is not going to be some sort of free-for-all saying: 'Come to us to get an abortion.' They are not there to promote abortion, they have to promote an array of services."

Speaking to Britain's right-leaning Daily Mail, Conservative lawmaker Nadine Dories said the move would allow broadcasters to make a profit "through advertising revenue off the back of a service which ends life. It's appalling."

British law allows abortion up to the 24th week of pregnancy, so long as two doctors agree that the procedure would cause less harm to a woman's physical or mental health than carrying the fetus to term. There is no time limit in cases which pose a serious risk to the life of the mother.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Actor Mark Wahlberg has apologized for asserting that he would have stopped terrorists from flying an airliner into New York's World Trade Center on Sept. 11 if he had been on the plane.

The star of the film "Contraband" issued his apology Wednesday after comments he made to Men's Journal drew criticism.

He told an interviewer in the February issue that had he been on American Airlines Flight 11 with his children "it wouldn't have went down like it did." Terrorists flew the plane with 92 people aboard into the north tower on Sept. 11, 2001.

In his apology, Wahlberg said to speculate was "ridiculous to begin with." He said that to suggest he "would have done anything differently than the passengers on that plane was irresponsible."

'Cupcakegate' prompts bakery to come up with TSA-friendly treat

By Dina Spector, Business Insider

A bakery in Providence, R.I. has take the recent TSA scandal, dubbed Cupcakegate, and turned it into a clever marketing scheme.

The saga began last December when airport security confiscated a cupcake in a 8-ounce jar at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas.

Although regular frosted baked goods aren't seen as a national security threat, the packaged cake had a thick layer of icing that violated that administration's 3-ounce carry-on limit for liquids, gels and aerosols, according to a post on the official TSA blog.

The kerfuffle prompted Kelly Colgan, the owner of Silver Spoon Bakery, to whip up a TSA-compliant cupcake ? a basic vanilla cupcake that comes with exactly three ounces of frosting in a quart-size plastic bag, according to Time's Samantha Grossman.

The cupcakes are acccompanied by a TSA boarding pass and an optional decorative picture of Richard Nixon that reads "I am not a gel."

A TSA agent takes a woman's cupcake at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas reportedly due to concerns over the frosting.

"We wanted to take a tongue-in-cheek look at what the ideal cupcake would be to be TSA compliant," Colgan told Mary Forgione the Los Angeles Times.

If you're traveling in the near future and have a hankering for a sweet snack, you can order the $4 TSA-approved confection through the bakery's website.

That road warrior mentality the New York Giants have embraced is paving their path nicely.

They will need it for one more game when they head to San Francisco next Sunday to play for the NFC championship.

Since making the playoffs as a wild card in 2007, Tom Coughlin's team has emphasized the need to be comfortable on the road. The Giants felt downright at home at Lambeau Field in the postseason for the second straight time, humbling the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers 37-20 Sunday.

Four years ago, they eliminated the Packers 23-20 in overtime on the Lambeau tundra.

"I think we're a dangerous team," Coughlin said. "I like where we are and how we're playing."

Why not? Eli Manning threw for three touchdowns for the second consecutive week, Hakeem Nicks caught two of his scoring throws ? one a 37-yard desperation pass at the end of the first half ? and the Giants (11-7) forced four turnovers from the usually precise Packers and had four sacks.

So it's on to San Francisco, where they lost 27-20 in November. But the Giants also lost to the Packers (15-2) during the regular season.

The 49ers (14-3) won a classic on Saturday, rallying to beat New Orleans 36-32 with a 14-yard touchdown pass from Alex Smith to Vernon Davis with 9 seconds remaining.

The AFC title game will match the Baltimore Ravens (13-4) and Patriots (14-3) in New England. Two years ago, Baltimore romped at Foxboro 33-14 in the wild-card round.

Baltimore finished off a 9-0 home record with a 20-13 victory Sunday over first-time playoff qualifier Houston.

Ed Reed's interception late in the fourth quarter sealed it, and the Ravens didn't commit a penalty or have a turnover. Lardarius Webb had two picks and Joe Flacco threw for two TDs.

"We have won in New England," Flacco said. "They are one of the teams, like us, that's tough to beat at home. We know how tough it is to go into a place like that, a place like here, and win a football game. So we're going to have to make sure we prepare well all week and bring our 'A' game up there."

New England routed Denver 45-10, silencing Tebowmania as Tom Brady tied an NFL mark with six touchdown passes and set another with five in the first half.

___

NFC

In their last meeting, 49ers All-Pro defensive tackle Justin Smith batted down Manning's pass in the closing seconds to preserve a win. That started New York on a downward spiral of four consecutive losses.

But the Giants have found a pass rush and a running game, Manning has maintained his sizzling pace in his best season, and they have gotten healthy. They've won five of six, including two playoff games.

"We went down there earlier this year and we didn't get it done, we fell short," receiver Mario Manningham said. "But I think we're going to go back and watch what we did wrong and just come back and do the right things."

San Francisco has done nearly everything right in a turnaround season under first-year coach Jim Harbaugh. They are extremely efficient with perhaps the best tackling defense in the league led by four All-Pros ? linebackers Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman, cornerback Carlos Rogers and Smith ? and ball-hawking skills that allowed them to lead the NFL with 38 takeaways.

Same thing on offense, with a league-low 10 turnovers.

"It's a lot better than traveling to Wisconsin. More importantly, we're playing a team we've already faced," Rogers said. "It's not as hard as preparing for another team we haven't faced yet."

The difference in pedigree for the quarterbacks is so large, though, that it could swing the edge to the Giants.

"Guys understand the way to win football games against good teams," Manning said. "Our defense is playing great with pressure and turnovers. Our offense for the most part is protecting the ball and playing smart football. When we have a chance to make a big play we are making them."

___

AFC

There's also a seeming mismatch at quarterback in this game. Brady's sensational season, with the second-most yards passing in NFL history behind only what Drew Brees managed in 2011, was somewhat overshadowed by Brees and Aaron Rodgers ? even by Tebow. But he sure took center stage against overmatched Denver.

"We know we have a big test next week," Ravens star linebacker Ray Lewis said. "Tom is playing excellent up there, and what they did to the Broncos ... I think they sent a message to whoever was coming up there. So, we've got our hands full and we've got to go up and get ready to play in the AFC championship."

New England rarely has faced a defense as strong as Baltimore's this season, however. Indeed, the Patriots lost to the best defense it opposed, Pittsburgh's.

If the Ravens can keep the game tight behind Lewis, Reed, Terrell Suggs and the staunch D, they'll hope their QB, Joe Flacco, can come up with enough big plays to get them to their first Super Bowl since January 2001. The Patriots have been vulnerable in pass defense, but their prolific offense has offset most problems.

"I always say there is a right way to do things, there is a wrong way to do things and there is just the Ravens' way of doing things," Suggs said. "It wasn't pretty but we're not really a pretty team. We got the W and now it's on to the AFC championship."

Cameron Diaz and Diddy Play Coy at Globes Bash

Cameron Diaz and Diddy continued to fuel rumors that they are dating Sunday night, as they sat together at a corner table at the Weinstein Company Golden Globes party.

Diddy arrived about 40 seconds before Cameron, who proceeded to hide in the corner of his table. Both posed individually for a house photographer, but when he tried to get group shots, Cameron bent 90 degrees at the waist to get out of the shot.

Cam left the party through a back door, 45 seconds before Diddy followed her out.

In a noteworthy twist, Lindsay Lohan was the next reveler to sit at the same table after Cameron and Diddy left the party.

Thousands of workers protest at Sanyo's China plant (Reuters)

HONG KONG (Reuters) ? Thousands of Chinese workers protesting over compensation and job security at a Sanyo Electric Co Ltd plant clashed with police in southern Shenzhen, media said on Monday, the latest outbreak of labor unrest in China's manufacturing hub.

About 4,000 workers protested over the weekend at the Sino-Japanese joint venture, the Chinese-language Oriental Daily reported. Sing Tao Daily and the People.com.cn website put the number at over 3,000.

The People.com.cn website said police arrested four people after clashes with police in Shenzhen, next to Hong Kong.

Sing Tao Daily quoted an employee as saying that workers feared they would not receive any compensation after Sanyo and Panasonic Corp (6752.T) integrated their businesses this month.

A Panasonic spokesman said in Tokyo said there had been a strike on Saturday at a Shenzhen factory that makes parts for audio speakers, but that production had returned to normal on Sunday.

The strike was sparked by the integration of the two companies, said spokesman Akira Kadota but he added that the exact nature of workers' demands was not clear, though the company was continuing to negotiate.

No impact was expected on clients from the stoppage at the factory, which employed about 3,400 people as of December 2010.

Hong Kong media also reported that about 2,000 workers protested at a factory in Jiangxi province owned by Changhe Auto, a unit of Changan Auto.

Workers were concerned about compensation and benefits after the parent company sold off Changhe's brand, the Oriental Daily said.

Changhe was not immediately available for comment.

Thousands of workers at factories of foreign companies in China have gone on strike or staged protests over the past year or so, demanding more pay and compensation.

The labor unrest disrupted production of shoe and apparel facilities in Guangdong province and watch, sportswear and electronics plants in the south and west.

In December, nearly 1,000 workers at a Japanese-owned factory in Shenzhen staged protests, demanding compensation based on their length of service after a change in factory ownership, media said.
