Now TomKat's over, can old Katie come back?

Matt Sayles / AP file

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise at the premiere of "The Kennedys" on March 28, 2011, at The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences in Beverly Hills.

By Courtney Hazlett

ANALYSIS: There are few courtships I?ve witnessed as closely as Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes?. For me, it began in a conference room where it was confirmed that the two were yes, really, actually dating. The eyes of my fellow magazine editors and reporters grew wide and most comments began with ?What the ...?? (You can guess what they ended with.)

Hundreds of paparazzi photos and just a couple months later, I vividly recall standing on the ?War of the Worlds? red carpet, being a little overwhelmed/grossed out by the way the two of them moved down the press line as a single, overly affectionate unit.

Thousands more paparazzi photos and a little more than a year after that, the couple married in Italy. I, along with every other entertainment reporter around the globe, scrambled to get details about just what went on inside the castle that night they promised to love, honor, cherish and ?to never close their eyes in sleep on a disagreement or upset.?

But what went on in the castle is not nearly is a big a question as what went on in that marriage. From spontaneous couch jumping to showing off baby Suri in pre-arranged photo shoots, the couple was obviously very public. But privately, they were an enigma. Now that the marriage of five years is over, everyone who bore witness to the relationship with any level of curiosity is asking the question of what the union was like.

While I don?t pretend to know what goes on inside anyone?s marriage, I can tell you what disappeared during this particular one: Katie Holmes.

Prior to taking up with Cruise, the post-?Dawson?s Creek? Katie was among New York?s fun-loving, 20-something social set. Our social circles overlapped from time to time, and she was known for being a fairly private but ?normal? young woman. She would go out to clubs with groups of friends ? not in the Lindsay Lohan tradition. She was mellow, danced a little and was happy, then would go home without undue drama. She shopped, went out to eat, and if not for her fame, would be just like any other young New Yorker.

Then she met Tom.

Holmes' evolution into Kate, as Tom renamed her, happened practically overnight. She disappeared from New York so entirely and swiftly, she didn?t even pack up her apartment, which she had just finished redecorating.? ?She called some friends and told them they were welcome to anything in there,? a mutual friend informed me at the time. ?She loved all that stuff so much, this is all really strange,? he said.

Also strange ? and you can?t talk Katie and Tom?s relationship without talking about this ? was her overnight devotion to Scientology. All preconceived notions about Scientology aside, it was shocking to see the good Catholic-school girl with a Scientology ?minder,? of all things. This constant companion was often introduced as her new best friend, and was soon identified to be Jessica Feshbach, a high-ranking Scientologist. A source very close to the couple vouched for the transformation, saying it was actually Holmes who was ensuring Scientology had a presence on her husband's film sets. "She became more devoted to it than he was for a time," the source said.

To be fair, Holmes is not the first person to fall so head over heels in love that they completely detach from their social circle and seemingly start that part of their life anew. You'd think that she had to be aware of it happening in real time ? you don?t just give away your possessions and adopt the practices of Scientology without being aware that you?re doing so. What I don?t think she was aware of was that she was giving away her career, too.

As the doe-eyed Joey Potter on ?Dawson?s Creek,? Holmes wasn?t exactly dropping hints that there might be an Oscar in her future, but she proved in 2000?s ?Wonder Boys? that she had real acting chops. Thanks to that role, it looked like she might be able to pull off what few actors can: the post-television film career.

Between the time ?Wonder Boys? was released and she married in 2006, Holmes is credited with eight more movies, the last one being ?Thank You For Smoking.? Released the spring before her wedding, it was rumored that Cruise had pressured the studio to cut a scene where Holmes was to appear topless. The film?s director, Jason Reitman, later shot down the rumor, saying, ?That?s a fun story; the problem is that it?s not true,? but it marks the first of many instances that Cruise was accused of steering Holmes? career in a way he deemed fit.

Fast forward to today, and in the time the two have been married, the only notable work Holmes has had was her recent miniseries, ?The Kennedys,? and a handful of flops. Motherhood might have put her career on hold initially, but recently, Holmes has been gunning for work and not getting it. One producer recalled for me a recent pitch meeting where her name was brought up for a role, and everyone in the room snickered.

?That's what happens now, and it?s because of Tom,? he said. ?No one takes her seriously.? ?

Luckily for Holmes, everyone loves a comeback story. She?s taken control of her marriage by filing for divorce, and now she has the opportunity to take control back of her own story -- personally and professionally.

Here?s to the rewrite. So many people will be glad to have Katie back.

Jade and gold at heart of Myanmar civil war

Poring over pictures of bullet-riddled bodies and charred villages, peace mediators say Myanmar's far north is writhing in the grip of a "resource war" with no end in sight.

Fighting in Kachin state has raged since a 17-year ceasefire between Myanmar's army and ethnic minority rebels crumbled last June, displacing up to 70,000 people in an unwelcome distraction from sweeping political reforms.

A group of four local businessmen led by a prominent jade tycoon have brokered multiple rounds of negotiations since November, seeking an elusive ceasefire, following a presidential order to the army to stop fighting.

But the mediators evince frustration as clashes have continued amid a massive troop buildup in the region -- fuelling speculation as to whether the reformist president wields full control over the once-omnipotent army.

"The president is like a referee in a boxing match. Once he says 'time's up', the sparring must stop," peace mediator and jade tycoon Yup Zau Hkawng told AFP in an interview in late May. "But that has not happened."

In May the government overhauled its negotiating team, putting President Thein Sein at the helm of the process and eliminating some elements seen by Kachin Independence Army (KIA) rebels as being linked to army hardliners.

The new team led by Railways Minister Aung Min has since held three rounds of talks in an attempt to build trust, but the situation on the ground has yet to show any tangible sign of improvement.

At a recent town hall meeting in the state capital Myitkyina there was a rare and impassioned outpouring of local grievances that observers say are fanning the conflict.

Some asked for the constitution to be amended to provide more legislative and administrative powers to the state, a long-standing demand of the locals who chafe at central government's stranglehold over the resource-rich region.

"Timber, jade, gold... all of Kachin's natural resources are used to develop lower Myanmar. Why not spend it on developing Kachin?" asked one local, according to two observers who attended the meeting.

The abundant wealth of resources in Kachin, wedged between India and China, is seen both as an impetus for war and an impediment to halting it.

"Several multi-million-dollar projects are in the conflict zone and each party to the conflict has an economic interest in the outcome of the war. China is the elephant in the room," said Matthew Smith, a consultant to Human Rights Watch and the author of a recent report on abuses and forced displacement in Kachin.

The building of a twin oil and gas pipeline from western Rakhine state, across rebel-held territory, to China's Yunnan province is currently in progress.

The government has allegedly sold off rights to timber and other valuable resources such as jade to Chinese companies and local businessmen seen as loyal to the regime.

Kachin is also home to several planned hydropower projects to supply electricity to China.

"This is a resource war -- a war to gain control over Kachin's wealth," said Yup Zau Hkawng. "The Kachin people have benefited the least and are suffering the most because of this war."

In a recent report, Amnesty International accused Myanmar's army of "indiscriminate attacks" against minority civilians that amounted to "war crimes".

It held the army responsible in Kachin for unlawful destruction of food and property, forced labour, extrajudicial executions and shelling that killed children.

UN supplies have been allowed into conflict-affected areas in recent months, but local aid workers say the army has deliberately restricted access to humanitarian agencies, cutting off aid to tens of thousands of people.

"Women have been raped, men tortured, villages pillaged, schools burned," Yup Zau Hkawng said, sifting through photographs of such atrocities collected by local aid groups. "Kachin is living in the dark ages."

Rights groups also accuse the KIA of abuses including the use of child soldiers and landmines.

The peace mediators have pressed for an exit strategy for the army from frontline areas controlled by the rebels, while continuing to advocate the signing of a new ceasefire.

"We've told them (the government), 'Look, you have a stronger, bigger army. You must take the initiative and withdraw'," said Yup Zau Hkawng. "Peace will be impossible if you have troops and rebels arrayed against each other in the state."

In December Thein Sein personally assured the mediators that the army would be withdrawn within days, he said.

Several rounds of peace talks held in the Chinese border city of Ruili ended with "positive sounding" statements as both sides showed a willingness to explore a negotiated settlement and agreed to moderate troop movements, Yup Zau Hkawng said, leafing through a hefty file of documents from the negotiations.

But the government continued to send reinforcements and mount offensives on rebel turf -- with some such actions taken just days after the talks ended.

"The KIA would call us and ask, 'Why are they sending more troops? Why are they continuing to launch attacks? They agreed to stop'," he said. "We told them we are equally clueless."

Yup Zau Hkawng said the army was engaging in a reckless game of chicken -- claiming unrealistically it believes it can militarily win the war even though the Kachin rebels enjoy a groundswell of local support.

"Their thinking is they can finish them (the rebels) off once and for all and set an example for other ethnic groups. But it has been a year since the war erupted and there is still no end in sight," he said.

"A political solution is the only way out."

NCAA ?13 happens July 10 ? Hawkeye preview

It is in the game. (EA Sports)

There is only one video game that gets my attention anymore.

We are in full-on NCAA ?13 countdown. The game comes out July 10. We are within two weeks of what many consider to be the ?real? start of the college football season. OK, it?s a video game. It?s not really real, but it is a blast.

EA Sports sent me some info on the new NCAA ?13 along with some Iowa screen shots.

(I wouldn?t post this if I didn?t think you?d be interested and if I didn?t enjoy it myself. I played my son last weekend in the demo. I slid by 10-8. ?I was USC and he was Oregon. He missed a 46-yard field goal wide left in the final seconds. Bragging rights!)

Looks like EA Sports likes the Hawkeyes in this year?s Floyd of Rosedale game.

Here is a link to some ?B roll? highlights. They have Jordan Canzeri at running back, but that can be adjusted. Also, Don Shumpert in as the No. 3 receiver. That?s still a possibility.

Here?s the pitch from EA Sports:

Iowa?s eagerly awaited return to the virtual gridiron will be on July 10 with the launch of NCAA Football 13. Lead the University of Iowa to a BCS National Championship before the two-a-day practices even begins with the latest from the NCAA Football franchise. Coming off a previous record breaking year, NCAA Football 13 fans now, for the first time, have the ability to utilize the skill sets of legendary Heisman Trophy winners in this year?s game as they try to emulate their past collegiate greatness.

In addition to using co-cover athletes and former Heisman winners Robert Griffin III (Baylor QB; 2011) and Barry Sanders (Oklahoma State RB; 1988), there are 16 other playable legends including Herschel Walker (Georgia RB; 1982), Marcus Allen (USC RB; 1981), Doug Flutie (Boston College QB; 1984), Desmond Howard (Michigan WR; 1991) and Tim Tebow (Florida QB; 2007).

New Features in NCAA Football 13

As well as featuring the new Heisman Challenge, NCAA Football 13 continues to capture the rich tradition and pageantry of college football with a host of new features:

  • Sights and Sounds: Featuring new team run-outs, mascots and pre-game traditions, along with significantly enhanced audio and new trophy presentations.
  • Gameplay: ?With a new passing system that changes the way quarterbacks and receivers play and respond, combined with a new read and react defensive AI system, NCAA Football 13?s sense of realism is unmatched.
  • Dynasty: The incredibly popular and deep dynasty mode returns now with the richest recruiting mode ever. Now with the ability to scout prep athletes out of college, utilize a dynamic grading system to obtain the perfect recruiting class.
  • Road to Glory: The experience of being a college football superstar is now even more exciting with a new feature in Road to Glory that allows players to see and feel the game differently during key moments, increasing on-field awareness and creating amazing opportunities.
  • TE C.J. Fiedorowicz goes up for a grab. (EA Sports)

Demo Now Available

And before NCAA Football 13?s launch on July 10, you can download the demo and check out the great gameplay enhancements for yourself including playing as RG3, experiencing the new total control passing system and much more. For more information about the demo and to download, visit: http://www.easports.com/ncaa-football/news/article/get-the-demo. Also, check out two new unlocks:

Marsha Temlock: Dealing With The Paparazzi

The news is out -- you're getting a divorce. For many couples, breaking the news to friends and family is the toughest part of the process. How you go about it sets the stage for the future. Welcome your parents' and well-meaning friends' support, but stand firm. They should respect your privacy and not pry. Understand, however, that once the news is out, your divorce is in the public domain.

So what are you going to say when you get all those phone calls and emails?

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Script your responses to the obvious questions. Stick to the party line, and make sure your parents, kids, colleagues, etc. are on the same page in terms of what you want them to say.
  • Don't make headlines by dumping on the in-law(s). You will do more damage than good by stoning his or her whole bloodline.
  • Think about your kids when you spread the news. Think about them again and again and again, and put yourself in their place.
  • Forget about private confidences. There is no such thing as "keep it under your hat." Hats blow off in the wind.
  • Return phone calls when you aren't angry or tired and likely to ramble.
  • Avoid daily updates.
  • Practice switch-hit topics. Have a ready list -- the movie you saw, your vacation plans, your uncle's hernia operation.
  • Practice deep breathing for those who want the itty-bitty details. There's nothing like a long pause to get the point across. "I really don't want to discuss this any further."
  • Distract yourself. My aunt has a great technique. If you have to talk to someone who is going to get your goat, keep a coloring book handy and focus on staying within the lines.

Can't keep from exploding or perseverating? Sit down and write (in long-hand) every nasty thought you ever had about the ex. Read the letter out loud (to yourself) and then put it in the safe deposit box for good.

BeSecure NDP-VM

The BeSecure NDP-VM ($5,000) virtual appliance is a secure Web gateway from Wedge Networks. The company's BeSecure line offers network administrators basic firewall capabilities such as port routing for protocols, but the main focus of the appliance is to inspect network traffic, identify suspicious packets, and block malware and offending content from reaching the endpoint. Administrators worried about Web threats and malicious emails can look over the BeSecure product family and take advantage of flexible deployment options, easy-to-configure security features, and detailed logging capabilities without breaking the bank. The NDP-VM is available as a dedicated hardware appliance or as a virtual machine. While I reviewed the virtual appliance, the experience is supposed to be the same regardless of the type of appliance deployed, virtual or hardware.

Who's it for?
BeSecure can perform real-time analysis of thousands of Web sessions and email traffic to protect the network as well as control access to certain Web content based on keywords. While knowing what is happening on the network is important, small and midsized businesses tend to have less complex networks and may not always be willing to shell out for security.

The only difference across various appliances is the box's processing capability. BeSecure NDP-1005D, the entry-level hardware appliance can process 100,000 email messages and a million HTTP requests per hour for more than a hundred concurrent users. The NDP-1005D is priced at $5,080. The virtual appliance I looked at, BeSecure NDP-VM, would come out to about $5,000 for an SMB customer. Wedge Networks also offers a cloud service, the Wedge Stargate, which provides the same protection for only $20 to $50 per person per year.

Large organizations would pick an appliance that matches the number of users and expected traffic. Businesses that have dipped their toes into the virtualization pool would find the virtual appliance a breeze, especially since there's no extra hardware investment required. The BeSecure NDP-VM is generally suited for businesses with about 100 people to 2,000 users. Businesses with fewer user would be better suited to try the Wedge Stargate cloud service.

WedgeOS
WedgeOS is the deep content inspection platform developed by Wedge Networks and the heart of the technology powering the BeSecure appliance. When booting up the BeSecure appliance, I could see the base modules for Fedora 12 loading, and the WedgeOS console launched after I logged in to the system.

The custom WedgeOS software doesn't look at just the network packets when scanning traffic. The Deep Content Inspection technology identifies the context in order to identify whether the traffic is legitimate or truly malicious. The Web gateways are designed to recognize digital objects, documents, images, and scripts when analyzing Web, email and other types of network traffic. It can extract files from archives, binders, packers, and scramblers to inspect all the components for malware.

WedgeOS identifies packets that were part of a malicious payload and then reconstructs a copy of the payload for analysis. It also scans the payload using a traditional signature-based scanner, a heuristic scanner, and an anti-spam filter. When malware is found, the user is blocked from reaching the website and a customized warning message is displayed in the browser.

Deploying the Virtual Appliance
Since the software handles all the filtering and inspection, the experience is expected to be the same whether the appliance is hardware-based or virtual. I reviewed the BeSecure NDP-VM virtual appliance.

NDP-VM is available as a VMware image. It's possible to install the virtual machine on VMware's ESXi Server 4 using vSphere 4, but VMware Player and VMware Fusion is also supported. Player is a stripped down version of VMware's virtualization platform with limited management capabilities. The accompanying QuickStart Guide provides step-by-step instructions for installing the appliance.

Deployment was just a matter of downloading the virtual machine from Wedge Networks. Customers would receive the package from either Wedge Networks or a certified reseller. After importing the appliance into the platform, I configured the appliance to use unique virtual networks for the appliance's network adapters. The virtual networks would make it possible for other virtual machines on the platform to connect to the BeSecure appliance using the Ingress port ?in transparent bridge mode. Ingress refers to a virtual port used for incoming traffic; Egress ports handle outgoing traffic.

The transparent bridge code also meant the appliance could see VLAN information and MAC and IP addresses associated with the network traffic.

I was surprised at how lightweight BeSecure was, as I could run the virtual machine in VMware Player on a small HP server. Wedge Networks recommended having 4 GB of memory for BeSecure, but it appeared to work just fine with just 2 GB on my test machine. I was able to run other virtual machines on Player and bridge them to BeSecure so long as I had sufficient physical memory on the server.

I also had the option to configure the appliance to see other machines on the network?not just virtual machines?in router mode. After setting up the appliance, I just made sure each endpoint was pointing to the appliance's IP address as the network gateway. In router mode, I could route physical and virtual machines on the same network to pass through BeSecure NDP-VM before reaching the Internet.

However, Microsoft's Hyper-V is not supported. Wedge Networks assured me that adding support for Microsoft's virtualization platform was on the roadmap. The team actually built a Hyper-V image for me to test with, but we ran into some issues tied to the way Hyper-V manages physical resources.

My View: Grading art in a standardized-test world - Schools of Thought

Courtesy Dunbar LylesBy Katie Lyles, Special to CNN

Editor?s note: Katie Lyles has been teaching art in Jefferson County, Colorado, for seven years. In addition to her classroom duties, Katie has been part of her school?s cabinet, the Jefferson County Strategic Compensation Steering Committee, and the Leadership Academy for the Colorado Education Association. She was also a member of TURN and a delegate representative for JCEA.? Katie is part of the steering committee for the Center for Teaching Quality?s New Millennium Initiative.

It takes a thick skin to be an elementary art teacher. And it?s not because of the clothes ruined by paint, the challenge of finding storage space for over 500 sculpture projects, or the glitter that sneaks into the most unlikely places.

No, what requires a thick skin is continually battling public perception that art?especially at the elementary level?is an ?easy break in the day? for students. When I tell people that I?m an art teacher, I?m often greeted with a patronizing response that goes something like this: ?Awwww! It must be fun to color all day!? That?s usually followed up with a stimulating question such as, ?Do you have any students who eat glue??

Truth be told, I do have fun coloring all day?while teaching color theory, elements of landscape, how to create visual interest through patterns, and the difference between a portrait and a still-life?and this is just with my second graders (who, by the way, have never attempted to eat the glue!).

Sadly, most people?s perceptions about art education come from their personal experience as students. Art classes look a lot different from a seven-year-old?s perspective than from a teacher?s perspective.

For one thing, teachers are responsible for measuring students? competency and progress in art. With the assessment lens ever widening?and teacher evaluations often based on student performance on standardized tests?the question of how to assess subjects that do not have a standardized test attached to them is a complex but necessary question.

Some may be shocked to know that subjects like art are, in fact, tested, but not in a fill-in-the-bubble-while-your-palms-sweat way.? I test my students in a variety of ways, which I?believe leads to a more accurate evaluation than one-time standardized tests.

Using multiple measures may not be ideal for a quick, state-wide assessment, but from my experience, this ?portfolio approach? yields more accurate results for a subject like art, where the concepts are demonstrated through project-based learning.?A portfolio approach allows teachers to measure different projects and assessments by a student rather than just one test.? This allows for a more accurate view of a student?s learning and growth because it uses a variety of assessments and data points to measure a student?s understandings.

Allow me the indulgence of describing my ?perfect world? scenario for assessing art classes.? Teachers would look at the following to evaluate students (and to improve our own instruction at the same time):

? Works in progress: Are students applying concepts and skills outlined in the curriculum guide? In art, it is important to measure the process and not just the final product because students demonstrate many concepts as they?re working. This formative evaluation leads to a more accurate assessment of a student?s understanding.

? Videos of student/teacher interactions: Video can help teachers look closely at students? engagement during lessons, as well as identify and troubleshoot spots of confusion.

? Written answers to questions: Not only do written questions reinforce writing skills, but they assess students? understanding of vocabulary, safety instructions, and overarching topics of instruction.

? Final project: How does the end product incorporate concepts and skills that were taught?? Here, teachers are measuring demonstration of the outlined curriculum?meaning students don?t necessarily need innate artistic talent to meet the grade-level standard.

In this ideal world, technology plays a large role. Teachers can collaborate and learn from one another using online data banks of student lessons. Teachers in the same non-tested content area can use similar projects to increase reliability among the outcomes.

Online tools allow for the creation of online galleries that showcase not only students? finished art products, but the learning process as well?which is so essential in a subject like art.

We already have a great information bank from generous bloggers who devote time to sharing their content area lesson plans. I?ve found projects outlined in a photo-gallery style that align with the curriculum content standards from my district, and have tried them out in my own classroom.

Not only can using online galleries help assess student work, they can also help connect parents to what?s happening in the classroom.? Having an evaluation program like this would also help me improve, since I?d be able to see my teaching through an objective lens. Teaching colleagues could also comment and offer advice.

Best of all? The public can see for itself that my students don?t eat the glue.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of Katie Lyles.

(AP) ? The Supreme Court struck down key provisions of Arizona's crackdown on immigrants Monday but said a much-debated portion on checking suspects' status could go forward.

The court did not throw out the state provision requiring police to check the immigration status of someone they suspect is in the United States illegally. Even there, though, the justices said the provision could be subject to additional legal challenges.

The decision upholds the "show me your papers" requirement for the moment. But it takes the teeth out of it by prohibiting police officers from arresting people on minor immigration charges.

The court announced that Thursday would be the last day of rulings this term, which means the decision on President Barack Obama's landmark health care overhaul probably will come that day.

Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the opinion for the court that was unanimous on allowing the status check to go forward. The court was divided on striking down the other portions.

Kennedy said the law could ? and suggested it should ? be read to avoid concerns that immigration status checks could lead to prolonged detention.

The court struck down these three major provisions: requiring all immigrants to obtain or carry immigration registration papers, making it a state criminal offense for an illegal immigrant to seek work or hold a job and allowing police to arrest suspected illegal immigrants without warrants.

The Obama administration sued to block the Arizona law soon after its enactment two years ago. Federal courts had refused to let the four key provisions take effect.

Five states ? Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah ? have adopted variations on Arizona's law. Parts of those laws also are on hold pending the outcome of the Supreme Court case.

Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Sonia Sotomayor joined all of Kennedy's opinion.

Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas would have allowed all the challenged provisions to take effect. Justice Samuel Alito would have allowed police to arrest undocumented immigrants who seek work, and also make arrests without warrants.

Scalia, in comments from the bench, caustically described Obama's recently announced plans to ease deportation rules for some children of illegal immigrants.

"The president said at a news conference that the new program is 'the right thing to do' in light of Congress' failure to pass the administration's proposed revision of the Immigration Act. Perhaps it is, though Arizona may not think so. But to say, as the court does, that Arizona contradicts federal law by enforcing applications of the Immigration Act that the president declines to enforce boggles the mind," Scalia said.

Cano, Yankees touch up Dickey in 6-5 win over Mets

NEW YORK (AP) ? Robinson Cano hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning and the New York Yankees touched up R.A. Dickey for five runs in a 6-5 victory over the Mets on Sunday night.

Nick Swisher had an early three-run shot against Dickey, who was coming off consecutive one-hitters ? making him the first major league pitcher in 24 years to accomplish that feat. But in a much-anticipated matchup at sold-out Citi Field, both he and Yankees ace CC Sabathia were missing their best stuff.

Leading off the eighth, Cano drove a 2-0 delivery from Miguel Batista (1-2) over the home run apple in straightaway center for his 16th homer and fifth in seven games. Taking advantage of a shaky Mets bullpen again, the Yankees won the final two games of the weekend by one run to finish 5-1 against their crosstown rivals this season.

Including a sweep in the Bronx earlier this month, the Yankees have won five consecutive series against the Mets since May 2010.

The talk of the town lately, Dickey was riding an unprecedented roll of dominance that rivaled any in baseball history. But the knuckleballer had an uncharacteristic bout of wildness against the homer-happy Yankees and lasted only six innings. He walked three, hit a batter and threw his first wild pitch of the season.

Sabathia, also coming off a complete game with double-digit strikeouts, gave up nine hits in 5 2-3 innings. He was betrayed by his defense while yielding five runs ? one earned.

Boone Logan (2-0) gave the Yankees another splendid performance out of the bullpen, and David Robertson retired Ruben Tejada with a runner on third to end the eighth. Rafael Soriano worked a scoreless ninth in the rain for his 15th save in 16 chances.

The Yankees have won 14 of their last 18 road games.

Dickey received a big ovation during pregame introductions and sent a smiling Alex Rodriguez sprawling to the dirt with a high-and-tight pitch in the first ? perhaps the first time the three-time MVP has been buzzed with a knuckleball.

Dickey used his bat and legs to help the Mets get started on their comeback from a four-run deficit. He singled off Sabathia in the fifth and hustled home from second on David Wright's two-out RBI single.

The 37-year-old pitcher slid into Chris Stewart at the plate, getting a face full of catcher's mitt and jarring the ball loose as his helmet was knocked off his head.

Trailing 5-2 in the sixth, the Mets took advantage of Cano's one-out error at second base to score three unearned runs with two outs. Vinny Rottino, pinch-hitting for Dickey, drew a four-pitch walk from Sabathia and screened Mark Teixeira when Andres Torres grounded a two-run single just past the Gold Glove first baseman.

Tejada tied it with a single off Cory Wade, who struck out pinch-hitter Kirk Nieuwenhuis with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Dickey wriggled out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the second but couldn't escape in the third. Two walks sandwiched around Rodriguez's dribbler for an infield single loaded the bases for Teixeira, the pitcher's old buddy from their early days in Texas.

Teixeira made solid contact on a sacrifice fly, ending Dickey's streak without allowing an earned run at 44 2-3 innings ? second-best in team history behind Dwight Gooden's stretch of 49 innings in 1985.

Swisher then sent a 2-1 knuckler well beyond the 390-foot sign in right-center for his 11th homer and a 4-0 cushion. He clapped his hands high as he rounded first base and wore a broad smile when he got back to the dugout.

It was the first home run off Dickey since Cincinnati slugger Joey Votto connected on May 17. After a no-decision in that game, Dickey won his next six starts heading into Sunday night.

Dickey plunked the leadoff batter and threw a wild pitch in the fifth, leading to Teixeira's RBI groundout that made it 5-1.

Stewart's second throwing error of the game helped the Mets get on the board in the third on a sacrifice fly by Tejada, just activated from the disabled list after he missed seven weeks with a strained quadriceps.

NOTES: Yankees C Russell Martin sat out after leaving Saturday's game in the ninth inning with a stiff lower back. Stewart usually catches Sabathia anyway, but manager Joe Girardi reiterated that he wants to get Sabathia and Martin working together again. Girardi said that might have been his battery Sunday night if Martin were healthy, but now the manager might wait until after the All-Star break to pair them in a game. ... Mets 1B Ike Davis, scratched from the lineup Saturday and sent home because of food poisoning, flied out as a pinch-hitter to end it. ... The crowd of 42,364 was the largest in the 4-year history of Citi Field.

Arrest made in 3 killings near Columbia University

By Jonathan Dienst and Shimon Prokupecz, NBCNewYork.com

NEW YORK -- Police have arrested a suspect in the execution-style shooting of three men found dead inside a parked BMW near Columbia University earlier this month, officials said.

Roberto Nunez, 30, was arrested in connection with the shootings Saturday morning in the Bronx. He was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count each of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a loaded firearm. Information on an attorney wasn't immediately?available.?

The gun used in the killings and DNA?linking the suspect to the crime have been recovered, police said. The DNA?came from a shirt he discarded near the crime scene, authorities said.

See the original report at NBCNewYork.com

"Detectives assigned to this case did a masterful job, relentlessly working it to apprehend a suspect who initially appeared so calm, collected, and out of reach." Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said after the arrest Saturday.

The three victims, 25, 26 and 30, were found inside a 2009 BMW parked near Claremont Avenue and West 122nd Street on June 7, police said.

The victims were known for robbing drug dealers and investigators believed they may have been targeted for that reason, sources told NBC?4 New York.

Two of the victims were found in the front seats of the car, and were shot in the head or neck; the third was found in the rear passenger seat and was shot in the left temple, according to NYPD?spokesman Paul?Browne.

Surveillance video near the crime scene captured images of the man believed to be the suspect walking calmly away from the car in which the three men were killed, police said. Video blocks away also captured images of him discarding a shirt he had been wearing that police used for DNA samples.

Hamas threatens to escalate attacks on Israel

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Gaza's militant Hamas rulers threatened to escalate fighting with Israel on Saturday after airstrikes killed several gunmen in the coastal territory, and Palestinian rocket attacks on Israel wounded one person and damaged an elementary school in the country's south.

The two sides periodically clash, but this flare-up was the most serious in months. It started with an attack by a little known al-Qaida-inspired Palestinian militant group but has extended to drag in Hamas.

Hamas has largely stayed out of direct confrontation with Israel since a war more than three years ago although other factions have launched cross-border attacks.

Gaza militants fired over 30 rockets and mortar shells on Saturday alone, bringing the week's rocket tally to more than 150, according to the Israeli military.

Over a million people in southern Israel live in range of the rockets and the Israeli military has advised the residents to make sure they can get to a bomb shelter quickly.

An Egyptian official in Ramallah said that he is trying to broker a cease-fire between the Palestinian militant groups and Israel. He said he hoped calm would be restored by late Saturday. Egypt traditionally plays a mediating role between the sides.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because negotiations were ongoing. Israel had no immediate official comment on the Egyptian efforts, but Hamas official Ayman Taha said his group would cease fire if Israel does. Soon after Taher spoke more rockets fired from Gaza exploded in southern Israel. It was not clear which group fired them.

A previous cease-fire reached late Tuesday did not hold long.

Military Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz convened "an urgent meeting" to discuss ways of dealing with a week of persistent Palestinian attacks, a spokesman said, while Defense Minister Ehud Barak consulted with senior officials Saturday evening. There was no official statement afterward but the Israeli media reported that the decision was made "to meet fire with fire and quiet with quiet."

Israel's military said it carried out a series of airstrikes Saturday in response to the rockets. At least four militants were killed and over 20 Palestinians, both combatants and civilians, were injured, according to Gaza health official Ashraf Al Kedra.

Hamas' military wing, the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, vowed to escalate the fighting.

"If the last rounds were not enough to deliver the message ... we are ready to crush the enemy and to curb its arrogance and to respond to aggression in a strong way," the group said in a statement released Saturday afternoon.

A few hours later an Israeli airstrike killed a Gaza militant riding a scooter. The Popular Resistance Committees, a Hamas-allied militant group that often fires rockets at Israel, said he was a member. Witnesses said the force of the explosion caused a wall of a nearby building to collapse, injuring several people. The Israeli military said they targeted the militant as he was preparing to launch rockets.

In an earlier attack the same day, an Israeli airstrike killed a Palestinian militant as he rode his motorcycle in Gaza. Several buildings used by Hamas, which rules the coastal territory, were also damaged.

The Israeli military said it hit "terror sites" and that it holds Hamas accountable for any attacks originating from the Gaza Strip.

Also, an Israeli was seriously wounded when a Gaza rocket smashed through a factory roof. Rockets from Gaza also hit a school in the Israeli border town of Sderot. The school was closed for the weekend so no one was hurt but the building was damaged. Several other Israelis were injured in Palestinian rocket attacks this past week.

"We have been enduring years of relentless Palestinian escalations and this is just one of them," said David Buskila, mayor of the Israeli border town Sderot where the school was hit. "We trust the Israeli military and government to restore calm," he said.

The spike in violence began Monday when two gunmen infiltrated into Israel along its border with Egypt's Sinai peninsula and killed an Israeli Arab construction worker who was part of a crew building a border security fence meant to avert such attacks. Later, a little known al-Qaida-inspired group, the Mujahedeen Shura Council of Jerusalem, claimed responsibility for the attack and identified the gunmen as an Egyptian and a Saudi.

Since then, Gaza gunmen have fired barrages of rockets and mortar rounds at Israel, wounding several Israelis and damaging apartment buildings. Israel has carried out airstrikes on militant targets that killed at least 12 Palestinians and wounded dozens so far.

Meanwhile, Gaza health official Ashraf Al Kedra said a boy was killed in a playground during an airstrike Saturday morning in Khan Younis. The Israeli military said it had not attacked that area.

Military spokeswoman Lt. Col. Avital Leibovich later called the allegation a "false rumor" and said that according to intelligence information, the boy was killed by "ordinance belonging to one of the terror groups." Palestinian rockets often misfire and explode inside Gaza.

Overtime Bidding

Why did the auction closing time extend by 10 minutes after I placed my bid? This is called "Popcorn" Bidding: Bids placed within 10 minutes prior to a lot's scheduled closing time will extend the closing time on that lot an additional 10 minutes. This gives all bidders an opportunity to place a competing bid. All lots will close when there have been no bids placed within the last remaining 10 minutes.

Max Bid

Your Max Bid is the most you are willing to pay for an auction item. Consider placing a Max Bid if you don?t have time to monitor an auction. Your Max Bid won't be displayed to other bidders, but will be displayed as the current bid based on the bidding increment. You won?t pay the Max Bid amount unless another bid bumps you up to the next increment.

Watching Items

You can monitor items you're interested in without placing a bid by selecting Watch This Item after you've logged into your account. Now you can keep track of the closing date, next minimum bid and number of bids from your Account page. We?ll email you a reminder to bid the morning items you are watching close. You can remove an item from your watch list from your Account page or by clicking the Watch button again.

Closing Time

This is the time the auction will end, but "Popcorn Bidding" could add 10 minutes to the closing time. If a bid is placed within 10 minutes of the closing time, the auction will extend by 10 minutes. This allows competing bidders a chance to stay in the race.
