BlackBerry Q10 hands-on

BlackBerry Q10 handson

Forget the all-touch Z10 for a moment. This here is RIM's BlackBerry's other BB 10 device -- the BlackBerry Q10. As you can tell from its alphanumeric moniker, that single letter is a nod towards the handset's physical leanings. That's right, it's a hybrid touch / physical QWERTY model and one that diehard BlackBerry fans won't only be more familiar with, but potentially more willing to embrace with open palms. With a 720 x 720 Super AMOLED 3.1 inch display, the Q10's screen is slightly larger than its touch hybrid predecessor, the Bold 9930, and sports a much tighter pixel density of 328ppi (BlackBerry claims the display is 360ppi, which doesn't jibe with our math). The screen itself is plenty bright and contrasty with incredible viewing angles. We didn't notice any of the telltale blue-tinge typical of AMOLED implementations, but the overtly blue lighting around us might have helped mask those shortcomings.

The steel band around the middle and "glass weave" backplate actually gave the device a pleasantly premium feel in our hands. It was solid, well shaped and smooth to the touch without being plasticky. The 1.5GHz dual-core CPU and 2GB of RAM keep the device humming along quite smoothly. It reacted almost instantaneously to input with no hiccups. The smaller screen size did make touch input seem a little less natural, but the ability to just start typing and search or perform actions (such as sending an email) more than made up for the slightly cramped confines.

The 10.3mm thick body does feel slightly chunky when compared to it's all touch sibling the Z10, and downright brick-like next to a svelte beauty like the Galaxy S III, but its short stout shape will fit in your pocket and palm with equal ease. At 139g it does pack some heft, but we dont see that as a bad thing. The phone feels like it means business -- something we can't say for some of its plasticky Android competitors. BlackBerry's Most Important Phone Isn't Its Flagship

BlackBerry announced two phones today, but it's clear which is the favorite son. The Z10 looks like a winner; it's got brains and body enough to face the iPhones and Galaxy S IIIs of the world head-on. It's got a release date and a price. It's a phone any company would be proud to call a flagship. In fact, its only downside is that it's totally irrelevant. Whoops! More »

CMAS replaces popular Wireless AMBER Alert Program for child ...

Amber-CMASmsg

In December 2012, changes were made in the way abducted-child AMBER Alerts are delivered to cell phones and other mobile devices.? In mid-December, AMBER Alert distribution began through FEMA?s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS).? As part of this change, alerts delivered via the long-established Wireless AMBER Alert Program were ended on December 31, 2012.? But should this move have been made at this time?

Should CMAS Replace a Popular Alerting Method?

As noted before on AWARE, CMAS only began in April 2012, and the vast majority of mobile devices currently out in the field do not yet incorporate the ability to receive CMAS alerts.? Conversely, the Wireless AMBER Alert program was begun by the wireless carriers back in 2005, and had a subscriber base of 700,000 people who had opted in to receive these alerts.? Granted, the Wireless AMBER Alert Program was SMS-based and was designed to target only down to the zip code area, but one would wonder with the still-low penetration of CMAS handsets whether the SMS-based program with almost three-quarters of a million subscribers (who opted in voluntarily) should have been retired at this early point in CMAS deployment.? Somewhat acknowledging that shortcoming, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) published a list of alternate sources of AMBER Alerts for those former SMS-based subscribers who do not yet own a WEA-capable mobile device to transition to.? The options include AOL, Facebook, Google, MySpace and Yahoo.? Those links are on the NCMEC website here. Also on the NCMEC site is the press release regarding this wireless device alerting change.

AMBER Alerts on CMAS

Nonetheless, the change was made.? So what do AMBER Alerts via CMAS look like?? Now that we are into 2013 and a few of these alerts have been issued, we can answer that question.? The graphic accompanying this story shows the screen capture of a CMAS AMBER Alert issued in Washington State recently.? The alert contains the vehicle description and license plate number.? This is similar to what we saw in the initial CMAS AMBER Alert issued in San Antonio, Texas, which read:

AMBER Alert: check local media.
LIC/7CZTJ (TX) 2002 Black Chevy Trailblazer

With CMAS messages limited to 90-characters, there isn?t much room for further details.? Note also that Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules prohibit the use of Internet website links or phone numbers, so officials are relegated to the phrase ?check local media? as a suggested source of further information.? For those interested in the details of the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) message issued by NCMEC, the Headline element contains the same 90-character wording as above, but the Description and Instruction elements are not used.? The CAP Area Description is simply, ?Target Area?.? NCMEC also uses the new BLOCKCHANNEL feature, which limits IPAWS dissemination to only the intended CMAS channel. ?For AMBER Alert cancelations, the CMAS message issued by NCMEC is to read: ?The AMBER Alert in your area has been canceled.?

How CMAS AMBER Alerts are Activated

AMBER Alerts are typically issued by a State AMBER Alert Coordinator, or other associated officials.? Those authorities route the abduction details to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), which then issues the AMBER Alert via CMAS as well as other numerous notification methods established by NCMEC.? NCMEC was established as the gatekeeper by FEMA to ensure that all AMBER Alerts issued via CMAS meet appropriate age and abduction details to ensure uniform CMAS AMBER Alert criteria across the country.? FEMA noted in a recent webinar that NCMEC has thus far issued 17 CMAS AMBER Alert messages involving eight to ten actual abduction events, with some events having multiple messages disseminated such as for the cancellation of the alert.? FEMA stated that most AMBER Alerts were statewide, but a few have been multi-county alerts.? It was agreed during the webinar that more public awareness needs to be done on CMAS AMBER Alerts; FEMA said it will likely involve its External Affairs office as it joins NCMEC in that effort.

How to Receive CMAS AMBER Alerts

The wireless carriers refer to CMAS as Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA).? When purchasing a new mobile device, be sure to ask for a device that is WEA-capable.? For a list of carrier web pages listing the currently-available WEA-capable devices go to www.ctia.org/wea. WEA-capable devices are sold with the user opted in, so if you wish to receive these alerts there are no settings to change.? As we progress further into 2013 and we gain more experience with CMAS AMBER Alerts, AWARE will update this issue.

Power helps you live the good life by bringing you closer to your true self

Jan. 28, 2013 ? How does being in a position of power at work, with friends, or in a romantic relationship influence well-being? While we might like to believe the stereotype that power leads to unhappiness or loneliness, new research indicates that this stereotype is largely untrue: Being in a position of power may actually make people happier.

Drawing on personality and power research, Yona Kifer of Tel Aviv University in Israel and colleagues hypothesized that holding a position of authority might enhance subjective well-being through an increased feeling of authenticity. The researchers predicted that because the powerful are able to "navigate their lives in congruence with their internal desires and inclinations," they feel as if they are acting more authentically -- more "themselves" -- and thus are more content.

Their findings are published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

In their first experiment, the researchers surveyed over 350 participants to determine if internal feelings of power are associated with subjective well-being in different contexts: at work, with friends, or in romantic relationships.

The results indicated that people who feel powerful in any context tend to be more content.

The most powerful people surveyed felt 16% more satisfied with their lives than the least powerful people. This effect was most pronounced in the workplace: Powerful employees were 26% more satisfied with their jobs than their powerless colleagues. The power-based discrepancy in happiness was smaller for friendships and romantic relationships. The researchers posit that this may be because friendships are associated with a sense of community rather than hierarchy, and therefore having power in this kind of relationship is less important.

In the second and third experiments, Kifer and colleagues examined the causal relationship between power, feelings of authenticity, and general well-being, by manipulating each of the factors independently. The results revealed that being in a position of power causes people to feel more authentic and "true to themselves" -- that is, it allows their actions to more closely reflect their beliefs and desires. Feelings of authenticity, in turn, enhance subjective feelings of well-being and happiness.

"By leading people to be true to their desires and inclinations -- to be authentic -- power leads individuals to experience greater happiness," the researchers conclude.

Kifer and colleagues propose that future research into power dynamics, happiness, and authenticity should focus on specific kinds of power, both positive (such as charisma) and negative (such as punishment).

Together, these findings suggest that even the perception of having power can lead people to live more authentic lives, thereby increasing their happiness and well-being.

Co-authors on this research include Daniel Heller of Tel Aviv University, Wei Qi Elaine Perunovic of University of New Brunswick, and Adam Galinsky of Columbia Business School.

This research was supported by grants from the Henry Crown Institute of Business Research in Israel and by a Harrison McCain Young Scholar award.

Qigong Improves Quality of Life for Breast Cancer Patients | Psych ...

Qigong Improves Quality of Life for Breast Cancer Patients New research has found that qigong, an ancient mind-body practice, has been found to reduce depression and improve the quality of life in women undergoing radiation for breast cancer.

The study examined qigong in patients receiving radiation therapy and included a follow-up period to assess its benefits over time, according to researchers.

?We were [...] particularly interested to see if qigong would benefit patients experiencing depressive symptoms at the start of treatment,? said Lorenzo Cohen, Ph.D., a professor in the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center?s Departments of General Oncology and Behavioral Science.

?It is important for cancer patients to manage stress because it can have a profoundly negative effect on biological systems and inflammatory profiles.?

For the study, Cohen and his colleagues recruited 96 women with stage 1-3 breast cancer from Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center in Shanghai, China.

About half of the women ? 49 ? were randomly assigned to a qigong group consisting of five 40-minute classes each week during their five-to-six week course of radiation therapy. The remaining 47 women comprised a control group receiving standard care.

The program incorporated a modified version of Chinese medical qigong, which consisted of synchronizing one?s breath with various exercises, the researchers explained.

Participants in both groups completed assessments at the beginning, middle and end of radiation therapy and then one and three months later. Different aspects of quality of life were measured, including depressive symptoms, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and overall quality of life.

According to the researchers, patients in the qigong group reported a steady decline in depressive symptom scores beginning at the end of radiation therapy, with a mean score of 12.3, through the three month post-radiation follow-up with a score of 9.5. No changes were noted in the control group over time, the study found.

The study also found that qigong was especially helpful for women reporting high baseline depressive symptoms, Cohen said.

?We examined women?s depressive symptoms at the start of the study to see if women with higher levels would benefit more,? he said.

?In fact, women with low levels of depressive symptoms at the start of radiotherapy had good quality of life throughout treatment and three months later regardless of whether they were in the qigong or control group. However, women with high depressive symptoms in the control group reported the worst levels of depressive symptoms, fatigue, and overall quality of life that were significantly improved for the women in the qigong group.?

As the benefits of qigong were largely observed after treatment concluded, researchers suggest qigong may prevent a delayed symptom burden or expedite the recovery process, especially for women with elevated depressive symptoms at the start of radiation therapy. Cohen notes the delayed effect could be explained by the cumulative nature of the treatments, as the benefits often take time to be realized.

According to the researchers, the findings support other previously reported trials examining the benefits of qigong, but are too preliminary to offer clinical recommendations.

They note that additional research is needed to understand the possible biological mechanisms involved and further explore the use of qigong in ethnically diverse populations with different forms of cancer.

The study was published in the journal Cancer.

'2-D' electronic devices, may be possible: Fine patterns made with single-atom-thick graphene and boron nitride

Jan. 27, 2013 ? Rice University scientists have taken an important step toward the creation of two-dimensional electronics with a process to make patterns in atom-thick layers that combine a conductor and an insulator.

The materials at play -- graphene and hexagonal boron nitride -- have been merged into sheets and built into a variety of patterns at nanoscale dimensions.

Rice introduced a technique to stitch the identically structured materials together nearly three years ago. Since then, the idea has received a lot of attention from researchers interested in the prospect of building 2-D, atomic-layer circuits, said Rice materials scientist Pulickel Ajayan. He is one of the authors of the new work that appears this week in Nature Nanotechnology. In particular, Ajayan noted that Cornell University scientists reported an advance late last year on the art of making atomic-layer heterostructures through sequential growth schemes.

This week's contribution by Rice offers manufacturers the possibility of shrinking electronic devices into even smaller packages. While Rice's technical capabilities limited features to a resolution of about 100 nanometers, the only real limits are those defined by modern lithographic techniques, according to the researchers. (A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter.)

"It should be possible to make fully functional devices with circuits 30, even 20 nanometers wide, all in two dimensions," said Rice researcher Jun Lou, a co-author of the new paper. That would make circuits on about the same scale as in current semiconductor fabrication, he said.

Graphene has been touted as a wonder material since its discovery in the last decade. Even at one atom thick, the hexagonal array of carbon atoms has proven its potential as a fascinating electronic material. But to build a working device, conductors alone will not do. Graphene-based electronics require similar, compatible 2-D materials for other components, and researchers have found hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) works nicely as an insulator.

H-BN looks like graphene, with the same chicken-wire atomic array. The earlier work at Rice showed that merging graphene and h-BN via chemical vapor deposition (CVD) created sheets with pools of the two that afforded some control of the material's electronic properties. Ajayan said at the time that the creation offered "a great playground for materials scientists."

He has since concluded that the area of two-dimensional materials beyond graphene "has grown significantly and will play out as one of the key exciting materials in the near future."

His prediction bears fruit in the new work, in which finely detailed patterns of graphene are laced into gaps created in sheets of h-BN. Combs, bars, concentric rings and even microscopic Rice Owls were laid down through a lithographic process. The interface between elements, seen clearly in scanning transmission electron microscope images taken at Oak Ridge National Laboratories, shows a razor-sharp transition from graphene to h-BN along a subnanometer line.

"This is not a simple quilt," Lou said. "It's very precisely engineered. We can control the domain sizes and the domain shapes, both of which are necessary to make electronic devices."

The new technique also began with CVD. Lead author Zheng Liu, a Rice research scientist, and his colleagues first laid down a sheet of h-BN. Laser-cut photoresistant masks were placed over the h-BN, and exposed material was etched away with argon gas. (A focused ion beam system was later used to create even finer patterns, down to 100-nanometer resolution, without masks.) After the masks were washed away, graphene was grown via CVD in the open spaces, where it bonded edge-to-edge with the h-BN. The hybrid layer could then be picked up and placed on any substrate.

While there's much work ahead to characterize the atomic bonds where graphene and h-BN domains meet and to analyze potential defects along the boundaries, Liu's electrical measurements proved the components' qualities remain intact.

"One important thing Zheng showed is that even by doing all kinds of growth, then etching, then regrowth, the intrinsic properties of these two materials are not affected," Lou said. "Insulators stay insulators; they're not doped by the carbon. And the graphene still looks very good. That's important, because we want to be sure what we're growing is exactly what we want."

Liu said the next step is to place a third element, a semiconductor, into the 2-D fabric. "We're trying very hard to integrate this into the platform," he said. "If we can do that, we can build truly integrated in-plane devices." That would give new options to manufacturers toying with the idea of flexible electronics, he said.

"The contribution of this paper is to demonstrate the general process," Lou added. "It's robust, it's repeatable and it creates materials with very nice properties and with dimensions that are at the limit of what is possible."

Leading Online Marketing Ideas To Expand Your Business

Posted by Sawyer Lunthmoreland on Jan 27, 2013 in Internet Marketing |

Internet marketing is the promotion of products over the internet. It easily brings together the creative aspects of the internet with the technical. This will bring a rise in sales to companies that put time into it. You will be reading many tips that will help you develop internet marketing for your company.

To create a quality newsletter, you need to write educational content. Your goal is to provide interesting information to your audience. Mention your products into your educational content, write informative texts about the products themselves, or explain how your product can have an educational use. Remember that people subscribed to your newsletter to learn something.

An important tip regarding Internet marketing is that if want to expand globally, you need to think globally. This is important because in order to best cater to people from other countries, you may wish to consider making changes to your site if it contains cultural sensitivities or humor intended solely for Americans.

It?s important that if you?re linking on someone else?s site for internet marketing that you make sure your link is a ?do-follow? link. You can click the page source of any link and look at the HTML. Unless it specifically says something to extent of ?do not follow," you know you?re safe here. Always be sure to check this.

Use forums to gain readers. Posting a teaser paragraph in several different forums can get people?s attention very quickly. The best way to do this is to find the forums that your target audiences frequent the most, and post it there. Make sure the paragraph is enticing and entertaining to gain the most.

Whether you?re allowing comments on your blog or website, you?re always going to run across a few jerks when running a business. Make sure you never reply to the buffoons of the world. Simply delete their comments and get on with your day. Do not appear childish by engaging in a back-and-forth with idiots.

When starting an online business, find a niche and become the authority on that product. For example, instead of selling shoes, sell extra wide shoes for men. While you narrow your playing field, you bring in traffic that has difficulty finding your product through other avenues, increasing your chances of making a sale. In addition, your business will be easier to find online because of your detailed key phrases. Try entering a search for ?shoes" and then enter a search for ?men?s extra wide shoes" and see what a difference a niche can make.

Internet marketing is often seen through banner ads, but these are not highly recommended. Do not invest much of your resources in banner ads if you want to successfully market your products or services online. Banner ads are increasingly being blocked with extensions in browsers, effectively deleting your ads from sites.

Creating a site map is very helpful for both search engines and visitors. It will help to find all of your pages, especially if you have a larger site. There are free tools that will help you create XML sitemaps, which are used by the major search engines to index webpages accurately.

Keeping yourself motivated is an important part of internet marketing and it is hard to keep your enthusiasm up if you keep jumping from project to project. Try sticking with just one project and stay with it until you see positive results. It may take some discipline, but it will be worth the effort.

When you concentrate on improving your internet marketing efforts, you are making excellent use of your valuable time. The marketplace accessible online is the largest in the world, and the potential customer base is incredibly vast. Reading articles like this one can pay off in a big way when you pick up useful new internet marketing tips.

Check out this additional training on Finding Profits Through Successful Internet Marketing Ideas. While you?re at it check out the many other resources that discuss Internet Marketing Strategies That Are Sure To Help Your Business Grow.

Scandal-hit Monte Paschi seeks new investor to revive bank

MILAN (Reuters) - Italian bank Monte dei Paschi di Siena is seeking a financial investor to help revive the ailing lender and will remove a current cap on voting rights to help raise 1 billion euros ($1.3 billion), its chairman said.

"I would like to have a long-term financial investor," Alessandro Profumo told Italian business daily Il Sole 24 Ore in an interview published on Sunday. "Nationality is not a problem. The important thing is that it believes in our project".

Late on Saturday the Bank of Italy gave its approval to Monte Paschi's request for 3.9 billion euros ($5.3 billion) of state loans, which Profumo said would be issued by February.

The central bank's backing was the final stage required to free up the financial help for Italy's third-biggest lender, which this week revealed loss-making derivatives trades that could cost it about 720 million euros.

In October, investors cleared a 1 billion euro share issue as part of its business plan, which Profumo said would be launched by the end of 2015.

Shareholders in the world's oldest bank on Friday approved two additional capital boosting measures for a combined 6.5 billion euros to be used in case the bank is not able to pay back the loans and interest with cash.

Profumo said he was confident the bank would generate enough cash to pay back the state bailout over the next five years and may not need to turn to investors to raise the 6.5 billion euros, which he described "theoretical" guarantees.

"We believe in this. The objective is to return to profits already during the course of this year," he said.

The bank will remove its current 4 percent cap to voting rights before launching the 1 billion euro cash call, he added. The move would encourage investors who could end up with more than 4 percent stakes to participate.

The scandal around opaque Monte Paschi trades is widening fast and Italian media have reported that public prosecutors are investigating a large number of derivatives contracts.

The issue has shot to the centre of the campaign for next month's national election and has prompted questions about how the deals, which were conducted between 2006 and 2009 and involved Japanese bank Nomura and Deutsche Bank, could have been hidden from regulators.

Monte Paschi was already under investigation over its 9 billion euro cash acquisition of smaller lender Antonveneta from Spain's Santander in 2007.

In an interview with La Repubblica daily on Sunday, Monte Paschi Chief Executive Fabrizio Viola said he had no evidence at this time that any crime had been committed, but the bank would not hesitate to protect its interests by taking legal action should any crime be ascertained by judges. Dying Woman Has Brain Frozen And Hopes To Live After Cancer ...

KimInside

Cancer is a horrible disease that continues to claim the lives so many so suddenly, and it?s no uncommon for family members of those stricken with the fatal illness to do all they can to grant their love one last wishes once it?s determined that nothing else can be done. But the last wish of this 23-year-old has got to be a first?.

via Fox News

It seems like the stuff of science fiction, a dying young woman decides she wants to be frozen after her death until a cure is found for brain cancer.
But for the family of Kim Suozzi, 23, it?s not fiction.

?I worked real hard on reconciling it with my personal faith and trying to be okay with it, and I am okay with it,? said Jane Suozzi, Kim?s mother, who lives in Ballwin.
For the final two years of her life, Kim knew she was dying of an aggressive brain cancer called Glioblastoma multiforme. But even before the diagnosis, she considered the idea of being cryopreserved someday.

Kim?s decision to be frozen after death is based on the hope science will someday find a way to bring her back to life after finding a cure for cancer.

Kim spent the final two weeks of her life at a hospice in Scottsdale, Arizona, so she could die in the same city as Alcor Life Extension, the cryopreservation facility she chose.
She passed away peacefully on January 17.

Kim?s friends and family also came together and raised $700,000 to help pay to have her remains preserved as she?d asked. ?This story is crazy hell and remarkable all at once.

Would you be able to grant this wish for your close friend or family member?

Recipe for vegetarian steamed dumplings with sweet-and-sour sauce

Whether or not Chinese New Year marks a major event in your life, it?s easy to love many of the foods associated with it.

Dumplings are a traditional choice for the holiday, which this year begins Feb. 10. And while there are seemingly endless variations on the simple theme of stuffing rounds of dough with something savory and delicious, the basic steamed dumpling is among my favourites. Not the least because it is incredibly weeknight friendly.

I always start by using purchased wonton skins as the dough. These skins, which are available in various shapes and sizes, are widely available, inexpensive, need no prep, cook quickly and are easy to work with.

For the filling, you can use virtually anything you like. Seasoned ground meats (pork, poultry or even beef all work quite nicely) are wonderful, especially when combined with diced vegetables, such as carrots and onion. The only trick is to make certain the ingredients aren?t watery, as this will ruin the texture of the dumplings.

If your filling contains many vegetables, it?s a good idea to give them a quick stir-fry before adding them to the mixture. This helps remove excess water. For smaller amounts of vegetables, this isn?t necessary. You?ll also want to opt for lean ground meats for the same reason.

For this dumpling recipe, I decided to go vegetarian and used purchased seasoned and baked tofu in the filling. If you?d rather use meat, substitute an equal amount of diced or ground meat and skip the food processing step. You?ll also need to steam for a bit longer (use an instant thermometer to check the progress and ensure you hit a safe cooking temperature).

For this recipe, I use a simple fold-and-pinch method of forming the dumplings. It requires no special equipment or skill. But if you make a lot of dumplings, consider getting a dumpling press sold for just a few dollars at Asian markets. These clamshell-style presses neatly fold and crimp the dumplings into attractive packets.

VEGETARIAN STEAMED DUMPLINGS WITH SWEET-AND-SOUR SAUCE

Seasoned baked tofu is sold with the other refrigerated Asian items, usually in the grocer?s produce section.

Start to finish: 45 minutes

Makes 48 dumplings

For the dumplings:

12 ounces seasoned baked tofu, cut into cubes

6 scallions, ends trimmed

2 cloves garlic

1/4 cup fresh cilantro, leaves and stems

1/2 cup finely grated carrots

1 whole egg or 2 egg whites, beaten

2 tablespoons hoisin sauce

2 tablespoons soy sauce

1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil

1 teaspoon hot sauce

12-ounce package 3-inch square wonton wrappers

For the sweet-and-sour sauce:

1/2 cup rice vinegar (cider vinegar can be substituted)

2/3 cup packed brown sugar

2 tablespoons apricot jam

2 tablespoons ketchup

2 teaspoons soy sauce

1 teaspoon hot sauce

1 tablespoon cornstarch

2 tablespoons water

In a food processor, combine the tofu, scallions, garlic, cilantro, carrots, egg, hoisin, soy sauce, sesame oil and hot sauce. Pulse until the tofu is finely chopped, but not ground, about ten 1-second pulses.

One at a time, place 1 teaspoon of the mixture in the centre of each wonton wrapper. Dunk your fingers in water, then use them to wet the edges of the wrapper. Gather the edges of the wrapper over the filling, pinching them together to form a small bundle. Repeat with the remaining filling and wrappers.

In a large saute pan, bring about 1 inch of water to a boil. Set a bamboo or other steamer basket over the water, then lightly coat it with cooking spray.

Working in batches if necessary, arrange the dumplings in the steamer (they should not touch), then cover and steam for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, prepare the sweet-and-sour sauce. In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the vinegar, brown sugar, jam, ketchup, soy sauce and hot sauce. Bring to a simmer. In a small glass, mix the cornstarch and water, then add to the saucepan. Simmer for another 2 minutes, or until slightly thickened.

Serve the dumplings with sweet-and-sour sauce on the side for dipping.

Katrina survivor moves 'Idol' judges to tears

By Craig Berman, TODAY contributor

There aren?t many events in recent years that touched Americans more than Hurricane Katrina, and there aren?t many reality competitions that understand the art of building an audience like ?American Idol.? It should be no surprise that the two met in the Baton Rouge auditions, to produce one of the best performances thus far in season 12.

Burnell Taylor, an unemployed 19-year-old from New Orleans, lost everything during the storm and moved with his family to Baton Rouge in the aftermath. Photos helpfully provided to the audience showed the devastation of his household, but Taylor noted one positive that came from the experience.

?I realized I knew how to sing after Hurricane Katrina,? Taylor said.

Taylor proved it with a stirring performance of ?I?m Here? that closed the show with perhaps the best performance of the season. It got a standing ovation from three of the four judges (Nicki Minaj stayed seated) and made Mariah Carey cry.

?All I can say is somewhere there?s a spotlight right now just waiting for you to walk into it,? Keith Urban said.

?That is what we came for,? Minaj said. ?I feel like we?ve been flying all around this country for that. That thing that can?t even be put into words. That thing that gives everybody chills and goosebumps. I?m so happy you did that because that wasn?t even an audition, that was just entertainment for us.?

Which begs the question -- what would cause Minaj to stand? And how dare she bring up ?goosebumps,? which we all hoped had been retired along with Jennifer Lopez.

Apart from that, Baton Rouge was filled with folks who were more quirky than inspiring.

I mean, it?s great that Ms. Greater Baton Rouge (Megan Miller) went against her doctor?s advice, risked infection, and hobbled in on crutches and sporting a wicked knee brace. But ?Idol? has dealt with a lot more serious health concerns in recent seasons. Just ask Phillip Phillips, Crystal Bowersox and Casey Abrams.

Charlie Askew was unexpected because he was so socially awkward, but ?Idol? takes guys like him every year and they always seem to do surprisingly well. After all, doesn?t everyone feel socially awkward at times? Especially teenagers?

Maddie Assel became the latest singer nominated by a family member and dragged out of their hometown by Randy Jackson to get four yes votes and a trip to Hollywood. It?ll be interesting to see how she and the rest of the shy types who needed that extra push to try out do in the more intense atmosphere of the next round.

We had firefighter Dustin Watts, but there are firefighters, policemen and the like every year. And Dr. Calvin Peters sang well, but it?s not like there was a lot at stake for him. If he washes out on the first day in Hollywood, he?s still a doctor, plus he has the advantage that any pressures the ?Idol? producers put on him can?t match what he needed to get through medical school.

No, it was Taylor who stole the show, and who will be Baton Rouge auditioner everyone remembers.

Were you moved by Burnell Taylor and his amazing story? Let us know what you thought of the Baton Rouge auditions on Facebook!

RAmos W42 tablet boasts quadcore Exynos chip, sells for around $200

It's been a long, long while since we last heard about RAmos 'round here, but that doesn't mean the Chinese company isn't trying to remain relevant in the electronics game. As such, we're more than happy to tell you about the outfit's newest Android slate, the 9.4-inch RAmos W42, which is powered by a wallop of Ice Cream Sandwich, Mali-400 GPU and a Samsung-made quad-core processor -- more specifically, it's the Exynos 4412. Other tablet specs include a not-too-shabby 1,280 x 800 IPS display, 1GB RAM, 16GB of built-in storage (expandable by way of microSD) and the now-accustomed front and rear cameras. The W42 appears to be up for grabs at e-tailers like the one linked below for about 200 bucks -- now, with some great options around that same price, only time will tell whether or not folks are tempted by this very one.

Symantec third-quarter profit beats Street, splits chairman, CEO jobs

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Symantec Corp beat earnings expectations and said it is splitting the chief executive and chairman jobs ahead of a Wednesday meeting to unveil a new strategy it hopes will end years of investor disappointment.

Symantec, the maker of Norton anti-virus software, reported profit of 45 cents per share, excluding items, for its fiscal third quarter ended December 28. That topped the average analyst estimate of 38 cents, according to a poll by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Revenue rose 4 percent from a year earlier to $1.79 billion, beating the average view of $1.74 billion.

The company named independent director Dan Schulman to the position of non-executive chairman, replacing Steve Bennett, who will remain CEO and president.

Symantec fired CEO Enrique Salem in July, tapping then-chairman Steve Bennett to take the post. Over the course of the Salem's term as CEO, Symantec shares fell about 19 percent, while the Nasdaq Composite Index climbed about 77 percent.

Schulman, on Symantec's board since March 2000, is president of the Enterprise Growth Group at American Express Co. He also worked at Nextel Corp and AT&T Inc.

Symantec shares rose 3.3 percent to $21.55 in premarket trade.

Indonesian governor inspires, but can he deliver?

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) ? Cheering crowds greeted the new leader of this Asian megacity as he toured its flooded business district atop a handcart typically used to haul garbage. Men, women and children waded through dirty water to shake his hand, shout greetings and hear his vague promises that their lives will get better.

"Come the dry season, we need to do something real, something concrete," Jakarta Gov. Joko Widodo said last week. "We need a breakthrough, whether that be a massive reservoir or whatever."

It's the kind of populist moment you see from many of the world's big-city mayors, but it's not typical for Indonesia, the largest economy in Southeast Asia. More than 14 years since dictator Suharto was overthrown, its politicians are still mostly drawn from the same stock: wealthy businessmen or former generals running more on connections and money than experience in government.

Enter Widodo, known universally by an affectionate nickname, "Jokowi." He comes from Solo, a smallish city in the middle of Java, and speaks Indonesian with the thick accent of people from those parts. He dresses simply in a white shirt and slacks, resembling one of the office workers who cram into Jakarta's falling-apart buses every day.

Widodo's trip through his inundated city of 14 million reflected his hands-on approach to leadership, a style that helped him win election in September against an incumbent who was backed by the establishment political parties.

The 51-year-old has made several moves aimed at shoring up support among the poor, including a big increase in the minimum wage, but many tough decisions, including those surrounding Jakarta's woeful infrastructure, remain ahead of him. The city is wracked not only by floods, but by corruption, worsening traffic congestion and a widening gap between rich and poor.

"I don't feel under any burden," he said in a 25-minute chat at a street-side coffee shack two weeks before the floods struck. He played to a gallery of photographers who snapped wildly every time he brought a cheap glass of joe to his lips.

"My task is simple," he said. "Just stop the floods and fix the traffic."

Widodo, a former furniture producer, was credited with bringing a new style of governance to Solo when he became mayor there in 2005, even though lasting achievements there are perhaps harder to pin down.

He was supported by the country's main opposition party, but appeared to distance himself from it, saying his alliance was "with the people." Many ordinary Jakartans believed him, as well as progressives and liberals, who helped in a savvy, social media-driven campaign that swept through the city's young, relentlessly online population.

"The old schemes don't necessarily lead to success anymore," said Frank Feulner, a governance specialist with the United Nations who was based in Indonesia for many years. "It's quite a development to see such a clean candidate in such a dynamic city. The fact that the political and commercial epicenter of the country has made this move is an encouragement to everyone else."

Widodo's choice of deputy cemented the idea that this was going to be a different kind of Jakarta administration. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama also began his career outside the city and developed a reputation for being tough when dealing with inefficient and corrupt staff.

One clip, uploaded by Purnama's office to YouTube, shows him angrily ordering public works officials to cut their budget by 25 percent, suggesting they have been marking it up. It has close to 1.5 million hits.

Widodo leaves much of the city's day-to-day administration to Purnama. "I'm the one who goes out and about. He improves the system from inside," he said.

One of Widodo's first acts was raising the minimum wage in the city by a whopping 40 percent to around $230 a month, winning him friends among the unions and those in formal employment, but concerning some economists who fear it will result in layoffs. He is also rolling out a health insurance scheme and free schooling for the poor, though how the city intends to pay for this over the long term is unclear.

His traffic plans include more buses to ply the city's dedicated lanes, some of which have already arrived, more roads and a scheme that would restrict the amount of cars that travel into the city center each day based on whether their license plate ends in odd or even number. He has postponed a plan to build a mass transit rail system like other Asian capitals, worried that ticket prices would be out of reach of the city's poorest.

On flood mitigation, he is proposing widening rivers, moving slum dwellers from their banks, new reservoirs outside of the city, a flood canal, 1,000 wells in downtown areas to absorb the groundwater that accumulates when the heavens open and campaigns to stop littering the waterways that crisscross the low-lying coastal city. Similar proposals were made by past governors, but they produced little.

Marco Kusumawijaya, director at the Rujak Center for Urban Studies, voted for Widodo, but is already a little concerned at what he is seeing.

"He showed signs of openness during his campaign but now I am a bit doubtful," he said. "He seems to be oscillating between 'yes' and 'no' on flood control and transport issues. I am disappointed that he and his team didn't do much homework during the campaign."

Back in Solo, people still speak well of Widodo, in large part because of his down-to-earth image and communication skills. After a first term, he won re-election there in 2009 with more than 90 percent of the vote.

But Setyo Herwanto, a researcher at foreign-funded civil society pressure group, raised some doubts about the longevity of his achievements during his seven years in charge of the city.

He said there was system in place to continue free school and health care he had initiated, and that many other of his well-published schemes to move traditional street sellers and fix traffic are no longer in place. "They were 'goodwill gestures' only. He left behind no legal framework," he said.

Yet Widodo's supporters in the opposition party, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, are already talking about him being the man that will lead their party back into power. Few believe that he will run for president in next year's polls, but five years down the line, he is already being talked up as a likely candidate.

A day after Widodo hosted a car-free New Year's Eve street party, opposition lawmaker Prasetyo Edi Marsudi expressed his hopes as the governor shook hands with Jakartans in the area where the party was held ? a venue the floods would inundate two weeks later.

"You see that man there," he said. "He serves the people, not the leaders. In 2019 he will be president."
