More than 80% of all Americans favor legal restrictions on abortion, according to a new Marist poll commissioned by the Knights of Columbus.
The Marist poll showed a modest increase in the number of respondents favoring abortion restrictions: from 79% last year to 83%. Only 11% of those surveyed expressed support for legal abortion on demand.
The poll found that 58% of Americans consider abortion ?morally wrong,? and 84% are confident that laws could be devised to protect both unborn children and their mothers.
Lee Miringoff of the Marist Poll said that the survey, which asked detailed questions about abortion policy, enables pollsters to ?get a more complete picture? than the more common surveys that merely ask respondents to say whether they are ?pro-life? or ?pro-choice.? Carl Anderson, the Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus, said that the poll results show that ?Americans are not legally or morally comfortable? with the country?s regime of unrestricted abortion.
