At Williamstown Theatre Festival: 'Animal Crackers,' when nearly Marx-ism isn't enough

(Courtesy photo)

WILLIAMSTOWN -- In taking on the 1928 George S. Kaufman & Morrie Ryskind/Bert Kalmar and Harrry Ruby musical, "Animal Crackers," director Henry Wishcamper has reimagined this Marx Brothers vehicle -- it was their last Broadway show before they headed to Hollywood where they made a film version in 1930 -- as, essentially, a series of loosely connected vaudeville sketches set against the background of a swank party in a swank Long Island mansion where a much prized painting is about to be unveiled, but not before it becomes the target of thieves.

Wishcamper sends the action spilling off the stage and into the audience at Williamstown Theatre Festival's Main Stage, up and down the aisles on the main floor and through the box seats on the second and main kevels.

But for all the energy being expended at Williamstown, it all feels more like a lot of huffing and puffing rather than antic and madcap; deliberate and effortful rather than the exuberant sharply timed rhythms of a "Laugh-In" or "Monty Python."

The chief problem is the show's Marx Brothers avatars -- Jonathan Brody's dutiful Chico-like Emmanuel Ravelli; Brad Aldous' unsettlingly leering Professor; and Joey Slotnick's Capt. Spaulding, one of Groucho's signature characters.

?

What's missing is the natural, easylooking chemistry among them; the audacious, brazen, carefree tearing apart of the pretensions of the idle rich. It doesn't help that Ellen Harvey's Mrs. Rittenhouse isn't

much of a target.

Brody goes through Chico's motions, playing the piano, for example, ably but without the tasty flavors Chico Marx brought to the keyboard. Aldous' Harpo takes an unimpressive turn at the harp. He lacks Harpo Marx' virtuosity just as he lacks throughout Harpo's robust libidinous spirit and boyishly impish, naughty impulses. There is something faintly unsettling and unnerving in Aldous' approach.

Slotnick catches Groucho's vocal and physical mannerisms but misses, for the most part, the edge that shapes his puns, ad-libs, insults, although at Thursday's opening, Slotnick began rising to Groucho's occasion in the show's second half.

Overall, the timing is off when the Nearly-Marx Brothers are around, especially Brody's Chico and Aldous' Harpo.

?

It's no small irony that "Animal Crackers" is at its most stylish and breezy when it is dancing and when it is in the hands of its supporting players, particularly Ren?e Elise Goldsberry, whose remarkable singing voice ranges from the captivatingly crystalline in her two duets with Adam Chanler-Berat, "Why Am I So Romantic?" and "Watching the Clouds Roll By" to the haunting deeper register in her remarkable "The Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives to Me," which is alone worth the admission.

Mara Davi also raises the bar, especially in her dance numbers with Joey Sorge -- the jaunty "Three Little Words" and the second-act opener, "Long Island Low Down."

Davi and Sorge's dancing -- indeed the dancing throughout -- soars on a terrifically saucy, impudent, carefree spirit that lifts "Animal Crackers" like a hot-air balloon, until the Nearly-Marx Brothers bring everything back to earth.

Win an Android tablet ... from CrackBerry.com?

Our pals at CrackBerry.com have had a tough day. Their beloved PlayBook tablet — you know, the only BlackBerry Tablet in existence — won't be upgraded to BB10. Not exactly a shock, especially to those of us who are used to seeing 2-year-old devices be put out to pasture with even less fanfare. At least these guys got a warning.

Anyhoo. CB's giving away a tablet — anything other than a PlayBook, we s'pose — with a contest running through the end of July 1. Seeing as how so many of you fine Android Central readers jumped ship way back when (and we know who you are), might as well lend a hand here.

Good luck!

Equipment Rentals To Perform Any Job In The Best Possible Way ...

S?o Miguel scops owl was wiped out after arrival of humans in the Azores

June 27, 2013 ? On S?o Miguel Island in the Azores, there used to exist a small, nocturnal bird of prey, related to the European scops owl, named Otus frutuosoi, which was very probably driven to extinction with the arrival of the first settlers in the 15th century. An international study, in which Spanish researchers participated, has for the first time identified fossils of this species endemic to the island.

On 28 August 2011 researchers Juan Carlos Rando, from the University of La Laguna (Tenerife), and Josep Antoni Alcover from the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies in Mallorca unearthed some small fossil bones buried not far below the ground of the ?gua de Pau cave (S?o Miguel Island, Azores, Portugal).

Two years later, an article published by the journal Zootaxa has revealed that the remains found belong to an extinct species of scops owl which has been given the name Otus frutuosoi in honour of the 16th-century Azorean historian Gaspar Frutuoso.

Carbon dating the fossils indicates that they are from 1,970 years ago. The hypothesis entertained by the researchers is that the arrival of human beings to the archipelago in the 15th century changed its ecosystem and caused the extinction of the species.

"Humans have a history of changing island ecosystems. When humans arrived on the island mice started to appear and laurisilva -- a type of humid forest -- was destroyed. This surely played a large part in the extinction of the S?o Miguel scops owl," Alcover explains.

Scops owls are nocturnal birds of prey, and this new species in particular is phylogenetically related to the Otus scops, or European scops owl, which with a length of 20 cm is the smallest nocturnal bird of prey on the Iberian Peninsular.

It is calculated that the wing surface of the Otus frutuosoi measured a maximum of 114 cm2, at least 33% less than the European scops owl, and although its legs were 11.6% longer, "the appearance of its body was more squat," according to the experts.

"The body of the extinct scops owl of the Azores was shorter and wider than that of its modern-day European relatives. Its beak was short and small, similar to that of the nightjar. Having long legs and very short wings, it must have been a very poor flyer and thus more of a land-dwelling bird," the scientist points out.

The second extinct scops owl on North Atlantic islands

A year ago, the same team of scientists documented another extinct bird of the same genus, although bigger, in Madeira: the Otus mauli.

Due to its anatomical features, the scientists believe that the Otus frutuosoi was an insectivore and must have lived on the ground of the laurisilva, where it would have found food and protection.

Otus frutuosoi remains have only been found on S?o Miguel Island in the Azores, therefore it is considered endemic to the island, although the authors do not discount the possibility of finding more fossils of the same species or other similar ones in various parts of the archipelago.

"The discovery of endemic scops owls in Azores and Madeira indicates that on occasions atmospheric conditions have occurred that have dragged these birds with them. Some reached safe land, where they survived and developed in isolated conditions, and new species formed," concludes Alcover.

ICAP executive seen linked to LIBOR scandal: Wall Street Journal

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A senior executive at British brokerage firm ICAP PLC knew that some of the firm's brokers worked with traders at UBS AG to manipulate benchmark interest rates, according to the Wall Street Journal, which cited sources familiar with the matter.

The executive, David Casterton, was included in some emails sent in 2007 documenting the discussions, in which UBS agreed to make quarterly payments to ICAP for help in rigging the London Interbank Offered Rate, or LIBOR, the paper said on its website on Wednesday.

A call and email to ICAP spokeswoman Brigitte Trafford were not immediately returned after business hours.

The rate-fixing scandal has infected many of the world's biggest banks, put in motion new attempts to set global interest rates and indirectly led to the departure of several top executives at Barclays PLC and UBS.

Casterton, who the paper said is a longtime deputy to ICAP Chief Executive Michael Spencer and currently head of global broking at the London-based firm, would nevertheless be one of the most senior executives affected by the Libor scandal, the Journal said.

An ICAP spokeswoman told the paper that no one at the company was "aware of any corrupt payment from any source at any time" and said it would be false and defamatory to suggest otherwise.

(AP) ? Microsoft is using a three-day conference this week to give people a peek into Windows 8.1, a free update that promises to address some of the gripes people have with the latest version of the company's flagship operating system. A preview version of Windows 8.1 was released Wednesday at the start of the Build conference for Microsoft partners and other technology developers.

Although many of the new features have been shown off already, the conference offers the company a chance to explain some of the reasoning behind the update and sell developers on Microsoft's ambitions to regain relevance lost to Apple's iPad and various devices running Google's Android software.

Windows 8, which was released Oct. 26, was meant to be Microsoft's answer to changing customer behaviors and the rise of tablet computers. The operating system emphasizes touch controls over the mouse and the keyboard, which had been the main way people have interacted with their personal computers since the 1980s. But some people have been put off by the radical makeover. Research firm IDC blamed Windows 8 for accelerating a decline in PC shipments worldwide.

Microsoft's event is taking place at The Moscone Center in San Francisco. The keynote kicked off shortly after 9 a.m. PDT.

Here's a running account of the event, presented in reverse chronological order. All times are PDT.

Presenters include CEO Steve Ballmer; Julie Larson-Green, corporate vice president for Windows; and Antoine Leblond, corporate vice president for Windows Web Services; and Gurdeep Singh Pall, corporate vice president for Bing.

___

10:50 a.m.

The keynote ends after nearly two hours, without Microsoft unveiling a smaller version of its Surface tablet computer, as many people had speculated.

Microsoft's stock increased nearly 2 percent in afternoon trading Wednesday, but much of the increase came before the keynote began.

___

10:45 a.m.

Microsoft executives demonstrate Project Spark, a simulator unveiled at the E3 video game conference in Los Angeles this month. It invites gamers to craft virtual worlds with the swipe of a finger, and then play through them on the Xbox One.

Ballmer uses that as an example of what a new world of apps can look like ? whether it's productivity in the office or hard-core fun with gaming. He says Microsoft is trying to facilitate all that by releasing updates rapidly.

___

10:30 a.m.

Microsoft unveils new capabilities with its Bing search technology, including better maps. The Windows 8.1 maps app will come with 3-D imagery, which developers can embed in their own apps.

Ask a question, and the service knows the context. For instance, when viewing a 3-D image of a building, you can simply ask, "Who is the architect?" Bing will know you are looking for the architect for that building.

Scan a business card with a camera, and optical-character recognition software can read it and have contact information translated from Spanish into English.

Pall says, "Apps are going to have eyes. They're going to have ears. They're going to have a mouth."

___

10:15 a.m.

Microsoft shows off several devices from Lenovo, Acer, Samsung and others. Some cost less than $400. Microsoft praises the ability to bring touch controls to devices at various price points. Microsoft also shows off its own Surface Pro tablet and says all developers at the conference will get one.

___

10:10 a.m.

Windows 8.1 will update apps automatically, and the Bing search engine will recommend new ones for you based on what you've used before.

Windows 8.1 also supports 3-D printing. On stage, Leblond starts printing a vase using a MakerBot device.

___

9:50 a.m.

As previously announced, Windows 8.1 offers more ability to run multiple apps at once. With Windows 8, you can have two ? one taking two-thirds of the screen, and the other the remaining third. The update no longer constrains you to that split, restoring functionality available with past versions of Windows. You're also no longer constrained to just two apps.

___

9:45 a.m.

Larson-Green says Windows 8.1 revamps search so that it's not just a list of links, but all the things you can do. Search for a band, and you get that band's music along with cover art and links to its website. You can hear a snippet through Xbox Music if you don't already own that song.

Windows 8.1 also has picture editing built in and the ability to do a video chat over Skype from the lock screen. You can also see a slideshow of your photos from that screen. She says Microsoft is making all programs much easier to get to.

There's also a hands-free mode, which can be useful while cooking. Instead of touching the device with messy hands, Microsoft says, you simply wave your hand over the camera to flip through a recipe.

___

9:35 a.m.

Larson-Green demonstrates Windows 8.1 on stage. She says having an update just eight months after Windows 8's launch shows how responsive the company's engineering team has become. The update, she says, "refines the vision of Windows 8."

There's a new start screen for smaller devices such as Acer's 8.1-inch tablet. An on-screen keyboard pops up from the bottom, with gesture controls added. Suggestions come up as you type; to choose one, you can slide a figure across the space bar and tap. Another gesture lets you more easily enter numbers by sliding your finger.

The email app has a new sweep command to delete all but the latest newsletter, for instance.

___

9:25 a.m.

One of the shortcomings of Windows tablets is a lack of apps for them. Ballmer says that's changing. He says Facebook, for instance, is now making an app for Windows 8. There are also fantasy football apps coming from the NFL.

The crowd cheered as Ballmer mentions some of the previously announced features coming to Windows 8.1.

That includes the ability to have machines automatically start up in the older, desktop mode rather than a tablet-style, full-page start screen that Microsoft has been pushing with Windows 8. Windows 8.1 will also restore a Start button on the lower left corner of the screen, although it will work differently in bringing people to the full-page start screen rather than the Start menu found in previous versions of Windows. He also talks about new search functions, using Microsoft's Bing search technology.

___

9:15 a.m.

Ballmer announces new phones from Nokia running a phone version of Windows software.

He also talks about a smaller Windows tablet than the ones previously available with Windows 8. The new Acer Iconia has a screen that measures 8.1 inches diagonally. He says Microsoft and its partners had to do a lot of work to "bring the small tablet form factor to life." Ballmer says customers should expect many smaller Windows tablets to come. That will allow Windows to compete with popular small tablets such as Apple's iPad Mini and Google's Nexus 7.

___

9:05 a.m.

Ballmer appears on stage to welcome 6,000 people at the conference and an estimated 60,000 watching live on a webcast. The audience includes hardware vendors and software developers.

Ballmer warns that Microsoft won't be talking much about the Xbox, Skype and Office 365, as there have been recent announcements on those. Rather, he's there to talk about Windows and related services. He says the announcements he has planned underscore Microsoft's transformation to "an absolutely rapid-release cycle."

A preview version of the upcoming Windows 8.1 was made available at the start of the conference at http://preview.windows.com

Hints And Guidelines For Using Payday Loans Wisely - Best Finance1

A payday advance is a relatively hassle-free way to get some quick cash. If an emergency arises, a payday loan may be the best option for you. Read the advice here before you make any decisions on payday loans.

Anyone who is considering accepting a payday loan must have a good idea of when it can be repaid. Interest on payday loans is ridiculously expensive and if you are not able to pay it back you will pay even more!

If you feel you must take out a payday loan, it is essential to shop around. If you are facing an emergency, you may be pressed for time and money. Regardless, it?s important to deliberate carefully before applying for a payday loan. This can save you a lot of time later so that you don?t have to spend your money on tons of interest.

Always check with your local Better Business Bureau (BBB) before using a company for a payday advance. You will be able to get information about their business and if they have had any complaints against them.

Keep your account filled with enough money to actually pay back the loan. Though your payment may be missed, the lender is going to still make a collection attempt. Your bank may hit you with fees, which will just add to your debt. Try to have the money in your account so that you can avoid further issues.

Take the lessons offered by payday loans. You may be shocked to find out how much payday loans really charge you. You can put that anger to constructive use by using it as motivation to start building an emergency reserve fund. That way, you can borrow the money you need from yourself the next time you have a shortfall.

Ensure you know what your loan will cost you in the end. It?s common knowledge that rates for payday loans are extremely high. However, payday loan providers can also charge borrowers hefty administration fees for each loan that they take out. These administration fees often are hidden in small print.

Live and learn. Once you have taken one and paid it off, you might regret it, considering the fees and interest that you ultimately paid. Make use of this anger as a tool to motivate you to save more money when it comes to your paycheck, in order for you to have money if ever an emergency arises.

Avoid thinking it?s time to relax after you receive the payday loan. It is not a free pass; you still have to pay off the loan, and be well aware of the fees and due dates. Missing payment deadlines is a very expensive mistake.

Request only the necessary funds that are required to pay back what you need with a payday loan. Many times, you?ll be offered a lot more than you need. Don?t be tempted to borrow all that is available.

If payday loans have gotten you into trouble, there are organizations that can provide you with assistance. Such organizations work at no cost to you, and can help with negotiations that will free you from the payday loan trap.

It is a good practice to look for the best loan rates before filling out payday loan applications. While you have lots of options for payday loans online, consider searching for local lenders in order to find the best rate. If you do some research before applying, you may be able to save a lot of money.

How much will you owe on top of what you borrow? Such loans tend to charge very high rates of interest. The amount you will have to pay back will just increase if you can?t pay it back by the time it?s due.

A short-term payday loan should be your last resort, so always make sure to seek the money from other sources before applying. This is a great way to keep your interest down. For example, getting just a portion of the money you need from other sources means taking out a smaller payday loan. This will save you in interest, saving you money.

With any luck, you now have a greater understanding of payday loans. Take everything that you?ve learned in this article and put it into practice. These loans can end up being quite costly. These loans are in many cases the ultimate double-edged sword, so use them with caution.

Sony Music Unlimited for iOS gains offline mode, 320 Kbps streams

Sony Music Unlimited is still a relative newbie on the iOS scene, but users will soon find a new revision that brings high-quality streaming and offline playback to the fold. According to Sony, version 1.3 of Music Unlimited for iOS is just around the bend, which will bring the ability to download entire albums or single tracks that can later be accessed within the app's offline mode. Also new in the latest update, you'll find high-quality streaming of 320 Kbps AAC files, which can be enabled in the app's settings. Sadly, you can't download high-quality files for offline playback, but at least iOS users can take solace in parity with the Android version.

Atiz BookDrive Mini

The first thing you need to know about the Atiz BookDrive Mini is that it's meant primarily for libraries (corporate and otherwise); archivists; and others who have a professional need to scan books and other bound material. But you probably guessed that from the price. The second thing is that it's not what you probably think of when you picture a scanner. It's essentially a camera stand and book holder plus software that lets you scan (and yes, scan is the right word) by taking photos. If you need to scan bound pages without risking damaging the original, it can actually be a bargain.

Book scanners come in two basic varieties. Some, like the Plustek OpticBook 4800, are similar to standard flatbeds, except that the platen comes to the edge of the scanner. To scan, you put one page of a book on the platen, with the facing page and that side of the book hanging straight down along the side of the scanner. That lets the page you're scanning lie flat, so you don't have to worry about the bound side rising up away from the platen, where it may not be in focus and text lines will look curved.

This kind of book scanner works well enough, but having to scan one page, turn the book to scan the facing page, then turn the page and start again is cumbersome. It's also easy to forget whether you just scanned a left or right page, so you have to look at the book to reorient yourself. Worse, letting a heavy book hang down along the side of the scanner can potentially damage old, fragile originals.

The V-Shaped Advantage
Scanners like the BookDrive Mini offer a better alternative. Instead of a flat platen, the book rests in a V-shaped cradle. That lets you open the book and see both facing pages, with page sizes up to 10 by 15 inches in the case of the BookDrive Mini. The cradle is near the base of a frame that also serves as a stand for two cameras. Each camera is pointed down at an angle to shoot one page, with the camera on the right pointed at the left page and the camera on the left pointed at the right page.

What turns the cameras plus cradle into a scanner is the way they work. The cameras connect to your computer, using your hard drive as camera memory, so they're sending files to disk. You also control the cameras from your computer, including adjusting the camera settings, giving the Capture command, and managing the files on your hard drive. The only difference from using a standard flatbed scanner is that instead of a sensor moving across the page one line at a time to capture the image, you're using the sensor in each camera to capture an entire page at once.

Scanning with this kind of book scanner is a lot faster and easier than with the flatbed kind. Once you have the settings right for a given book, all you have to do is give the command to capture the first two facing pages, turn the page, and repeat. Atiz says that with typical settings, you can scan about 700 pages per hour. That works out to a little over 11 pages per minute on average, and seems to be a reasonably relaxed pace based on my tests.

Pricing and Rentals
The BookDrive Mini is available only from Atiz, with somewhat different pricing than with most products. One choice is to buy the frame and software by itself for $6,295, and get the cameras elsewhere. Atiz says that the software will work with any Canon SLR camera, and the company will be happy to advise you on the best model for your needs.

If you want a single source for everything, you can also get the cameras through Atiz, in which case the price will depend on which cameras and lenses you get. The standard choice is the Canon-EOS Rebel T3i camera with 18 to 55mm zoom lenses, for $8,679.83 for the bundle.

There's also a third choice. If you need to digitize only a limited number of books, you have the option of renting a scanner. Atiz says this done on a case by case basis, however, so there's no standard price.

One final issue is the option to pay for setup and installation plus a full day of on-site training. According to Atiz, company representatives show up at 8 AM, have the installation done by 10 AM, and then spend the rest of day training groups of up to four people each, taking one hour to 90 minutes for each group. The price for the day is $3,700.

Atiz says that most BookDrive Mini buyers set up the unit themselves, with setup support by phone and Skype included in the price of the scanner. The on-site setup is more common with Atiz's larger BookDrive scanner ($13,985 without cameras). The BookDrive is designed for page sizes up to 16.5 by 24.2 inches on each half of the cradle, making it suitable for scanning broadsheet newspapers like The New York Times.

Installation Issues
Whether or not you plan to install the BookDrive Mini yourself, make sure you have enough room for it. The scanner measures 34 by 32 by 40 inches (HWD) and weighs 57.2 pounds. And if you're doing it yourself, expect to spend more than the two hours Atiz takes. Assembling the pieces is a little like putting together prebuilt furniture. It's not all that complicated, but it takes time.

Installing the BookDrive Capture and BookDrive Editor Pro software is mostly standard fare, except that the installation routine doesn't automatically check with the Atiz website to see if you have the latest version. The smart approach is to ignore the disc that comes with the scanner and go to the website to download the program manually. (For my tests, I used BookDrive Capture 6.0.1 and BookDrive Editor Pro 6.0.9). Note too that the Capture program hooks into the Canon EOS camera utility, so you have to install the Canon utility too.

One other departure from standard for the software is that it requires a security dongle, with a separate dongle for each program. Making this much less of a problem than it could be is that the scanner comes with a four-port USB hub. So instead of tying up two USB ports with the dongles, you get a net gain of one.

Scanning
Unless you paid for training, getting started with the BookDrive Mini is harder than it should be, because the software doesn't offer anything like a Wizard to help step you through setting up for scanning a book. There isn't even a help file installed on your computer. Expect to spend some time on the phone with tech support to get started.

That said, the basic process is simple enough once you've learned it. For example, it's important to turn the cameras on in the right order, so the software will know which one is the left page and which is the right. You also have to turn on the white LED lights, and adjust each camera's zoom, focus, position, and settings for the particular book you're about to scan. With different size books, for example, you'll need to adjust the zoom, and you'll want to make sure both cameras give you matching brightness for the pages.

For fine-tuning image quality, you'll also want to take advantage of the Image IQ feature. Atiz provides an image IQ chart with color patches, black and white patches, and other details. When you scan it, the software compares the scan with what it already knows the chart looks like. It then uses that information to manage color and other quality issues in the scanned pages.

Once everything is set up, scanning is almost trivial. In addition to the V-shaped cradle to hold the book, the scanner has a spring-loaded V-shaped glass platen to sit over the pages and help keep them flat. The platen is on a track, so it can move up and down, with springs helping it move easily. To keep it out of the way, you can move it to the top of the track, where it's held in position by magnets. To scan, you move it to the bottom position, just over the book pages, give the Capture command from your keyboard, lift the platen up, flip the page, and repeat.

The Capture software controls the cameras, saving each page in its own file, using JPG or RAW format, and indexing the pages as right or left and in numeric order. It also shows you the scan results of each page so you can check the quality as you go, and it offers conveniences like being able to replace pages you've already scanned or insert new pages, and then reindex the pages, which means renaming the files, so the page numbers will still be in the right order.

After you've finished scanning, you can open the scanned files in BookDrive Editor, where you easily crop the pages, apply digital enhancements like despeckling and deskewing, and then resave the pages or convert them to PDF, PDF/A, TIFF, or multi-Tiff. There is no optical character recognition (OCR) feature, but if you have an OCR program, you can open the files and convert them to whatever format the program supports, with searchable PDF the obvious choice.

The BookDrive Mini's price alone ensures that it will be of interest to only a small audience. But keep in mind that although it's expensive compared with scanners like the OpticBook 4800, it's less expensive than most scanners with similar V-shaped cradle designs. And even compared with the OpticBook 4800, the time you save with faster scanning can easily pay for the difference in price if you scan enough books.

More than that, if you need to scan old, fragile originals, a scanner with a V-shaped cradle is the best way to keep the original safe. For all of these reasons, the Atiz BookDrive Mini can actually be a bargain. It should make the short list for any company or other organization that needs to scan a large number of books at up to 10- by 15-inch format.
