Speak.
FEATURING KOSAL KIEV. A POETRY NIGHT.

Speak is organized by a new poetry collective that seeks to give the people a voice. It is a platform for writers to share their poetry and spoken word. Our statement is to foster a community of individuals who want to stand up for what they believe in and share the personal stories that need to be heard. Our main agenda is to purely support and encourage up and coming creative writers.

Speak is our attempt to break into the club scene, to seed the growth of a new movement. We dare to create this stance of freedom in speech. In all humbleness we ask of you, to join us and speak what you want to. We are founding this experience for you to take in. So let us crowd around a microphone and hear the bedroom speakers share their deepest words, their angry tones, their jubilant spirits and their best kept secrets. Come and speak with us.

Kosal Khiev (b.1980, Kao-I-Dang)

Kosal Khiev is an exiled poet, tattoo artist, and survivor of the US prison system. Born in a Thai refugee camp, Kosal?s family fled to the U.S in 1981. Instead of the American dream, Kosal?s family lived in grim public housing with scarce social services. At the age of 16, Kosal was arrested in a gang fight and charged with attempted murder. Kosal was tried as an adult and sentenced to 16 years in a state penitentiary. While serving 14 years in prison he discovered spoken word poetry from a former Vietnam War veteran. Spoken word became his creative channel to tell his own story and transform his anger, regrets, and experiences into a poetic art form. Upon release in 2011, the U.S. government deported him to Cambodia, a country he had never been. Since his arrival, he has taken the urban arts scene by storm, using spoken word to uplift his situation with compelling performances at open mics, universities, and public stages. Kosal was selected as the poet to represent Cambodia at the 2012 London Cultural Olympiad for the Poetry Parnassus, the largest historical gathering of world poets. The Studio Revolt filmWhy I Write featuring his spoken word performance was recently awarded ?Best Poem Performance on Film? at the Berlin Zebra Poetry Film Festival. Kosal continues to collaborate as an artist-in-residence with Studio Revolt on projects such as Verses in Exile his upcoming webisode series and the documentary Cambodian Son about his first year living in exile in Cambodia.
