Few people are aware of this, but back in the "old days," instead of painting them one solid color or putting up wallpaper, everyone used to just cover walls with paintings of famous peoples' heads. All the famous people were represented?every single president, a boxer, a vomiting pirate, a guy who looks like Edward Allen Poe, possibly some sort of dog, etc. Then they would finish the room off with wall-to-wall carpeting. That is what "period detail" really means and it's also the true meaning of Christmas.

The decision to put the word polished in scare quotes here is so unfathomable that it's almost beside the point that everything in the house looks incredibly well polished. Compliments to the maid.
