The University of Connecticut women?s basketball team had hoped to take a similar road to the Final Four that it used in its 2009 national championship season.
But there will be no stop in Trenton, N.J. in 2013.
The NCAA announced Monday that it has been forced to relocate several championships from New Jersey because of a new state law allowing sports wagering on professional and collegiate games.
The Sun National Bank Center in Trenton was to be the site of a regional next March 30 and April 2.
?Maintaining the integrity of sports and protecting student-athlete well-being are at the bedrock of the NCAA?s mission, and are reflected in our policies prohibiting the hosting of our championships in states that provide for single game sports wagering,? NCAA executive vice president of championships and alliances Mark Lewis said in a statement. ?Consistent with our policies and beliefs, the law in New Jersey requires that we no longer host championships in the state. We will work hard in the days ahead to find new suitable host locations which will allow the student-athletes to have the best possible competitive experience.?
According to a release from the NCAA, the NCAA championships sports wagering policy strictly prohibits the conducting of any championship session in a state with legal wagering that is based on single-game betting. Single-game betting is defined as wagering that involves either a money line or point spread wager. This policy is in place to ensure the integrity of the game, provide consistency in awarding NCAA championships and to address concerns for student-athlete well-being.
The release continues, in July, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement released proposed regulations concerning the licensure and operation of sports gambling in Atlantic City casinos and at New Jersey?s racetracks and those regulations were published in the New Jersey Register today. In August, the NCAA and four major professional sports leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL) sued New Jersey state officials in federal court seeking to stop the state from implementing sports wagering. The suit is ongoing.
In 2009, UConn defeated Vermont and Florida at Gampel Pavilion to open NCAA tournament. The Huskies then went to Trenton and beat California and Arizona State. Wins over Stanford and Louisville in St. Louis wrapped up a 39-0 season and the program?s sixth national championship.
If UConn qualifies for the 2013 tourney, it would host first- and second-round games at Gampel Pavilion March 23 and 25. The other regional sites are Norfolk, Va., Oklahoma City, Okla., and Spokane, Wash. The Final Four is set for New Orleans Arena April 7 and 9.
The NCAA will also move the 2013 Division I men?s and women?s swimming and diving championships as well as the diving regionals scheduled for Piscataway, N.J., March 14-17, the Division III men?s volleyball championship scheduled for Hoboken, N.J., April 26-28, and the Division II and III women?s lacrosse championships scheduled for Montclair, N.J., May 18-19.
