Families First gets grant from dental foundation

PORTSMOUTH ? Families First Health and Support Center was among the recipients of grants from the Academy of General Dentistry Foundation ? philanthropic partner of the Academy of General Dentistry ? through its AGD Foundation Grant Program.

"The number of people in desperate need of dental care is staggering," said AGD Foundation President Paula S. Jones, DDS, FAGD. "Good oral health means more than just a pretty smile. Many people aren't aware that their oral health impacts their overall well-being. The AGD Foundation is proud to help support organizations that are dedicated to making a difference."

Families First received a $5,000 grant.

Through individual and corporate donations, the AGD Foundation helps support access to health care programs that give back to local communities. Most recently, the AGD and AGD Foundation hosted the third annual outreach project "Nation of Smile, One Smile at a Time," at the AGD 2012 annual meeting in Philadelphia. This program provided nearly $150,000 of free dental care to 325 underserved Philadelphia residents.

AGD constituents and nonprofit organizations are encouraged to apply now for the 2013 AGD Foundation Grant Program. The deadline to submit an application is Oct. 31. For details, visit www.agd.org/agdf/grants/smile.asp.

'Savvy Caregiver' training offered

YORK ? "Savvy Caregiver" is a training program for family caregivers of people with disorders causing dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease.

Often, these family members take on the role of care-giving without any preparation or training.

The state of Maine has been awarded a grant through the U.S. Administration on Aging to offer this training series, which will be done locally through a partnership between York Hospital and the Southern Maine Agency on Aging. The program is designed for people who are assisting a family member or friend with dementia, and helps them develop knowledge, skills and attitudes to make care-giving easier.

"Savvy Caregiver" consists of six two-hour class sessions, and encourages participants to try out ideas at home between classes.

Participants are asked to plan on attending all six classes in the series.

The series will be held Thursdays at York Hospital, starting Sept. 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. There is no charge to participate.

For more information or to register, call Kate Fallon at SMAA, (800) 427-7411 ext. 558.
