Alt-week 6.22.13: The LRO's fourth moon-year, a 3D brain and alien telegrams (video)

Altweek 62213 The LRO's fourth moonyear, the 3D brain and your alien telegrams

The moon is far from old hat. In fact, after exactly four years on the job, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is just scratching its jagged surface. The dearth of info on our celestial neighbor isn't stopping us from trying to send personal space messages to a far-flung star system, though. Why? Blame it on our huge brains, which we've now mapped in detailed 3D. Yes, this is alt-week.

(AP) ? Prosecutors in Florida can argue in opening statements that George Zimmerman profiled Trayvon Martin based on factors such as age or clothing before he shot the unarmed black teenager, but they cannot say he was profiled based on race, a judge ruled Friday.

Circuit Court Judge Debra Nelson made the ruling ahead of Monday's expected opening statements in Zimmerman's second-degree murder trial.

Defense attorneys had asked the judge to prohibit prosecutors from using a series of words in opening statements that they deemed inflammatory. Those words included "profiled," ''vigilante," ''wannabe cop," and that Zimmerman had confronted Martin. Zimmerman identifies as Hispanic.

The judge said all of those statements may be used, provided that race is not discussed if the issue of profiling is brought up.

Prosecutor John Guy had argued that there were a number of ways someone could be profiled other than race.

"That is not a racially charged term unless it's made so, and we don't intend to make it a racially charged term," Guy said. "There are a number of avenues someone can be profiled in any one way or combination. We don't intend to say he was solely profiled because of race."

Defense attorney Mark O'Mara said he was concerned using the word "profiled" would "infect" the jury with a racial component that shouldn't be there.

"I want to be very, very cautious," O'Mara said.

Six female jurors were chosen Thursday for the second-degree murder trial of Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watch volunteer who says he fired on Martin in self-defense last year in a gated community in Sanford. Zimmerman is pleading not guilty.

The judge has yet to rule on whether a prosecution expert can testify that screams for help captured on a 911 call came from Martin. Defense attorneys don't want the expert to testify, claiming his analysis is flawed.

Prosecutors have said Zimmerman, 29, profiled the 17-year-old Martin as he walked back through the central Florida community from a convenience store on a rainy night in February 2012 wearing a dark hooded shirt.

Race and ethnicity have played a prominent role in the case and even clouded jury selection. While the court did not release the racial makeup of the jury, the panel appeared to reporters covering the selection process to be made up of five white women and a sixth who may be Hispanic.

On Feb. 26, 2012, Zimmerman spotted Martin, whom he did not recognize, walking in the gated townhome community in Sanford where Zimmerman lived and the fiancee of Martin's father also resided. There had been a rash of recent break-ins at the Retreat, and Zimmerman was wary of strangers walking through the complex.

The two eventually got into a struggle and Zimmerman shot Martin in the chest with his 9mm handgun. He was charged 44 days after the shooting, only after a special prosecutor was appointed to review the case and after protests.

Martin's shooting death and the initial decision not to charge Zimmerman led to public outrage and demonstrations around the nation, with civil rights leaders and others accusing Sanford police of failing to thoroughly investigate the shooting.

The six jurors were culled from a pool of 40 candidates who made it into a second round of jury questioning. Two men and two women also were picked as alternate jurors.

>> sydney , what is it like to see your mom walking?

>> before she walked, i told her like don't be surprised if all you can do is shuffle a little bit. she looked at me and said, no, i'm going to walk.

Hillary Clinton says she wants America to have a woman president. Surprised?

'I really do hope that we have a woman president in my lifetime,'?Hillary Rodham Clinton?said this week.?Was that a hint about her own possible candidacy?

By Mark Trumbull,?Staff writer / June 22, 2013

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton addresses the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) meeting in Chicago last week. Her speech was a broad-brush address heralding the power of women and talking education and opportunity.

She didn?t say she?s going to run for the White House in 2016. But, to many listeners, the latest words of Hillary Rodham Clinton certainly hint that it?s a strong possibility.

?Let me say this, hypothetically speaking,? she said, ?I really do hope that we have a woman president in my lifetime.?

Members of the audience, at a women?s lecture series in Toronto, cheered.

To get beyond the ?hypothetical," a quick follow-up question: Isn?t it possible that, when voters get the opportunity to see a woman on the presidential ballot as a major contender, the initials of that nominee might be H.R.C.?

Answer: Yes, it looks very possible.

Mrs. Clinton currently gets a ?favorable? rating from 6 in 10 Americans, is widely known, and has been making moves you might expect of someone positioning themselves for a presidential run.

After being Secretary of State, she?s bowed out of public service for President Obama?s second term. She?s showing her interest in domestic affairs by engaging in an initiative for early childhood education. Having been a strong contender for the Democratic nomination back in 2008, she knows a lot about campaigning.

Some other major democracies have had female chief executives, including people like Margaret Thatcher in Britain and, currently, Angela Merkel in Germany. For more than two centuries, America hasn?t broken that gender barrier.

?I think it would send exactly the right historic signal to girls and women, as well as boys and men,? Clinton told the Thursday crowd in Toronto. Video?footage of the comments, captured by an audience member, was posted on YouTube.com by the Associated Press Friday.

?It really depends on women stepping up and subjecting themselves to the political process,? Clinton added.

Quoting another former First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, Clinton said women need Rhinoceros-thick skins to be in politics.

She also said electing a woman would require a ?leap of faith? for US voters.

Some polls have found Americans saying they have no problem with the idea of a woman as president. A?Gallup poll?in 2006, for example, found 6 in 10 saying Americans are ?ready? for that.

Will Clinton herself ?step up? for the 2016 contest? We?ll see. Her popularity has ebbed and flowed over the years, but since early 2008 a majority of Americans have given her a favorable rating in Gallup polls.

She has lots of fans. But as she departed from her role as Secretary of State, Clinton?s aura of success in that job was tarnished by?controversy?over the State Department?s handling of events in Benghazi, Libya, in which Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in a terrorist attack.

And she has long been a magnet for conservative criticism. On Thursday, the Republican group America Rising launched a?StopHillary2016.org?website to raise funds in opposition to her potential candidacy.

?Exploding? Box Scrapbook - The Hybrid Chick

Hi ? poki here with another project that allows you to use pre-made layouts to create a gift! ?I love making mini books as gifts for family and friends, but this time I decided to make one just for me! The format is a small box, and when you remove the lid the sides fall down revealing 13 places to attach your photos or layouts.

To create the artwork for my ?exploding? box, I used the beautiful Boutique Collab called SLAINTE?which is part of the ?Digi Chicks Around the World ? series for 2013.The kit is so full of beautiful patterned papers in shades of green, blue, brown, and gold. ?Being as ?fond of green as I am, I headed straight for the greens in the kit, and I was not disappointed! ?I found a quote that perfectly reflected what I wanted this book to be ? a tribute to the 13 family and friends who are a blessing in my life everyday! ??Love overflows and Joy never ends, in a home that is blessed with Family and Friends.? ?I used the quote to create the artwork for the top of the box!

Using a similar format and background, I created the 13 artpieces for inside the box, with photos of my family and friends! ?Here is the layout I did with a photo of me and my BFF Mike!

The base of the box is made with 2 pieces of ?cardstock (one is 12? x 12?, the other is 10 1/2? x 10 1/2?). ?The 12? x 12? pieces is scored at 4? and 8? both directions, which gives you 9 blocks that are 4? x 4?. ?The four blocks in the corners are removed, leaving what looks like a square cross. On the 10 1/2? x ? ? ?10 1/2? pieces of card stock score at 3 1/2? and 7?, giving you 9 blocks which are 3 1/2? x 3 1/2?. ?Remove the four corner pieces, leaving another square cross ? Here are some mock-ups of the way the two square crosses are completed:

FRONT OF 10 1/2? X 10 1/2? piece

Back of 10 1/2? x 10 1/2? piece

Front of 12? x 12? piece

Back of 12? x 12? piece (the outside of the box!)

The base for the lid of the box is an 8.25 x 8.25? piece of cardstock, scored at 1? and 2? all around the outside. ?After scoring, 2? slits are cut on opposite sides of the piece. ?Arrows in the example below show where slits are cut. ?Fold up the left and right sides, and fold tabs toward the middle, and then fold top and bottom sides over the tabs and adhere. ?Artpiece is added to the top of the lid, and a strip is added around the 1? side of the lid! ?Two holes were punched in the edge of the lid ?to insert ribbon and tie a bow.

And now, your scrapbook that isn?t a book at all is complete! ?Here is my completed project!

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Investigators have found what they believe are human remains in a search of the former home of late New York mobster Jimmy Burke, suspected mastermind of the 1978 Lufthansa cargo heist, New York City Medical Examiner spokeswoman Ellen Borakove told Reuters on Thursday. She said the medical examiner's Office is checking material FBI agents scouring the Queens home found a day earlier, and it appears they are human remains. Indexes edge up as Fed slowdown fears ebb

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks are ending slightly higher after a report of tepid U.S. economic growth raised expectations that the Federal Reserve will continue its stimulus program.

The government lowered its estimate for growth in the first three months of the year to 2.4 percent from 2.5 percent.

Stocks slid last week on concerns that the Fed might slow its bond purchases.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 21 points to 15,324 Thursday, or 0.1 percent. The Dow was up 95 points in the afternoon, then faded in the last hour.

The Standard & Poor?s 500 rose six to 1,654, or 0.4 percent. The Nasdaq rose 23 points to 3,491.

Three stocks rose for every two that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was average at 3.5 billion shares.
