Boston bombing amputee rises to her feet

>>> good evening, a live look at the city of new york tonight. and hour headquarters on a beautiful friday night. and we begin just to our north in boston . not long after our cameras arrived there and not long after the initial shock and confusion over the marathon bombing, we came to know some of the victims. one of them more than the rest. ke left has allowed its to chronicle her recovery. and she has become a living example for our viewers much grit and per se variance. tonight to start us off, kate snow reports on a crucial new stage for celeste her first steps on a new set of legs to replace her own.

>> we first met her and her daughter just eight days after the bombings. sher daughter suffered se sha rap nell continued.

>> it's been hard, but mother and daughter moving on to fiscal therapy, sydney learning to walk again and se sleft preparing for her proth thet i can legs. celeste was at her high school graduation still in her wheelchair. but this week, all that changed. she finally got her first set of legs and by day two, she had already ditched her walker. by her side as always, her sister who ran the boston marathon , her son tyler, and sydney .

>> sydney , what is it like to see your mom walking?

>> before she walked, i told her like don't be surprised if all you can do is shuffle a little bit. she looked at me and said, no, i'm going to walk.

>> i'm just watching you --

>> now the hugs are at eye-level.

>> i'll keep you up.

>> and everybody has been noticing how tall you are.

>> yes.

>> you were 5'4".

>> and now i think i'm 5'7".

>> you noticed it right away.

>> immediately.

>> i'm taller than you.

>> we've got to work on that. it's killing me.

>> you want to take a couple of steps?

>> yes.

>> this is the woman we've come to know. the embodiment of boston strong.

>> i feel like i'm on stilts.

>> but the re'llty is singing in. recovery can be grulg and even painful.

>> boston strong is fantastic and everybody pulling together in a time when everybody needed to was what everybody need, you know. but for the people who are still damaged -- sorry -- it's just not that easy to stay boston strong, you know?

>> but you're allowed to have a bad day . like you said, it's going to take a while to get to the other side. you're not there yet.

>> i think that's what's frustrating because i want to be there you now.

>> these legs feel foreign. each step that once came so naturally is now hard work.

>> i really do want people to see that it is hard. you know.

>> it's the reality. there's no reason to sugar coat what's going on.

>> it is auto easy.

>> but with each day, she's one step closer to getting back the to beach, driving a car, returning to her wark as a hairstylist.

>> your station is still there, right?

>> it is. i don't want to to be like a shine or something.

>> but you do want to go back and stand in that station on your legs and do people's hair.

>> do people's hair. that's what i love to do. every day we do take a step forward . some days we take some steps back, but we always end up forward.

>> carmen has been thinking about running again in next year's boston marathon .

>> do you want her to run again?

>> that's a hard question. because there's a huge part of me that's like, no, i don't want to go anywhere near there. no. if it's a goal that she sets and wants to do, then i'll probably be scared out of my mind, but i'll be standing there watching her cross.

>> she's going to be right where i stopped and these two are coming down the street with me. i'm not take it by myself. whether we walk holding hands or do a slow jog. that's the only way i'll go down. i'm not running a whole mayor mon.

>> nope.

>> kate snow is here with us. we all profit from knowing her and knowing her story. and her recovery includes a whole new house of her condition.

>> because they had an older home and narrow hallways and steps up to the front door and that doesn't work anymore. they're buying new property and build a new home. now those legs that you saw, those are tens of thousands of dollars for one pair of process thesies and she ago have several. it's a great expense.

>> thank you for this and everything. kate snow here with

Hillary Clinton says she wants America to have a woman president. Surprised?

'I really do hope that we have a woman president in my lifetime,'?Hillary Rodham Clinton?said this week.?Was that a hint about her own possible candidacy?

By Mark Trumbull,?Staff writer / June 22, 2013

Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton addresses the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) meeting in Chicago last week. Her speech was a broad-brush address heralding the power of women and talking education and opportunity.

She didn?t say she?s going to run for the White House in 2016. But, to many listeners, the latest words of Hillary Rodham Clinton certainly hint that it?s a strong possibility.

?Let me say this, hypothetically speaking,? she said, ?I really do hope that we have a woman president in my lifetime.?

Members of the audience, at a women?s lecture series in Toronto, cheered.

To get beyond the ?hypothetical," a quick follow-up question: Isn?t it possible that, when voters get the opportunity to see a woman on the presidential ballot as a major contender, the initials of that nominee might be H.R.C.?

Answer: Yes, it looks very possible.

Mrs. Clinton currently gets a ?favorable? rating from 6 in 10 Americans, is widely known, and has been making moves you might expect of someone positioning themselves for a presidential run.

After being Secretary of State, she?s bowed out of public service for President Obama?s second term. She?s showing her interest in domestic affairs by engaging in an initiative for early childhood education. Having been a strong contender for the Democratic nomination back in 2008, she knows a lot about campaigning.

Some other major democracies have had female chief executives, including people like Margaret Thatcher in Britain and, currently, Angela Merkel in Germany. For more than two centuries, America hasn?t broken that gender barrier.

?I think it would send exactly the right historic signal to girls and women, as well as boys and men,? Clinton told the Thursday crowd in Toronto. Video?footage of the comments, captured by an audience member, was posted on YouTube.com by the Associated Press Friday.

?It really depends on women stepping up and subjecting themselves to the political process,? Clinton added.

Quoting another former First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, Clinton said women need Rhinoceros-thick skins to be in politics.

She also said electing a woman would require a ?leap of faith? for US voters.

Some polls have found Americans saying they have no problem with the idea of a woman as president. A?Gallup poll?in 2006, for example, found 6 in 10 saying Americans are ?ready? for that.

Will Clinton herself ?step up? for the 2016 contest? We?ll see. Her popularity has ebbed and flowed over the years, but since early 2008 a majority of Americans have given her a favorable rating in Gallup polls.

She has lots of fans. But as she departed from her role as Secretary of State, Clinton?s aura of success in that job was tarnished by?controversy?over the State Department?s handling of events in Benghazi, Libya, in which Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans were killed in a terrorist attack.

And she has long been a magnet for conservative criticism. On Thursday, the Republican group America Rising launched a?StopHillary2016.org?website to raise funds in opposition to her potential candidacy.

?Exploding? Box Scrapbook - The Hybrid Chick

Hi ? poki here with another project that allows you to use pre-made layouts to create a gift! ?I love making mini books as gifts for family and friends, but this time I decided to make one just for me! The format is a small box, and when you remove the lid the sides fall down revealing 13 places to attach your photos or layouts.

To create the artwork for my ?exploding? box, I used the beautiful Boutique Collab called SLAINTE?which is part of the ?Digi Chicks Around the World ? series for 2013.The kit is so full of beautiful patterned papers in shades of green, blue, brown, and gold. ?Being as ?fond of green as I am, I headed straight for the greens in the kit, and I was not disappointed! ?I found a quote that perfectly reflected what I wanted this book to be ? a tribute to the 13 family and friends who are a blessing in my life everyday! ??Love overflows and Joy never ends, in a home that is blessed with Family and Friends.? ?I used the quote to create the artwork for the top of the box!

Using a similar format and background, I created the 13 artpieces for inside the box, with photos of my family and friends! ?Here is the layout I did with a photo of me and my BFF Mike!

The base of the box is made with 2 pieces of ?cardstock (one is 12? x 12?, the other is 10 1/2? x 10 1/2?). ?The 12? x 12? pieces is scored at 4? and 8? both directions, which gives you 9 blocks that are 4? x 4?. ?The four blocks in the corners are removed, leaving what looks like a square cross. On the 10 1/2? x ? ? ?10 1/2? pieces of card stock score at 3 1/2? and 7?, giving you 9 blocks which are 3 1/2? x 3 1/2?. ?Remove the four corner pieces, leaving another square cross ? Here are some mock-ups of the way the two square crosses are completed:

FRONT OF 10 1/2? X 10 1/2? piece

Back of 10 1/2? x 10 1/2? piece

Front of 12? x 12? piece

Back of 12? x 12? piece (the outside of the box!)

The base for the lid of the box is an 8.25 x 8.25? piece of cardstock, scored at 1? and 2? all around the outside. ?After scoring, 2? slits are cut on opposite sides of the piece. ?Arrows in the example below show where slits are cut. ?Fold up the left and right sides, and fold tabs toward the middle, and then fold top and bottom sides over the tabs and adhere. ?Artpiece is added to the top of the lid, and a strip is added around the 1? side of the lid! ?Two holes were punched in the edge of the lid ?to insert ribbon and tie a bow.

And now, your scrapbook that isn?t a book at all is complete! ?Here is my completed project!

Cable customers file lawsuit aimed at breaking up bundles

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Investigators have found what they believe are human remains in a search of the former home of late New York mobster Jimmy Burke, suspected mastermind of the 1978 Lufthansa cargo heist, New York City Medical Examiner spokeswoman Ellen Borakove told Reuters on Thursday. She said the medical examiner's Office is checking material FBI agents scouring the Queens home found a day earlier, and it appears they are human remains. "I think they are," Borakove said, declining to comment further. ...

Indexes edge up as Fed slowdown fears ebb

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stocks are ending slightly higher after a report of tepid U.S. economic growth raised expectations that the Federal Reserve will continue its stimulus program.

The government lowered its estimate for growth in the first three months of the year to 2.4 percent from 2.5 percent.

Stocks slid last week on concerns that the Fed might slow its bond purchases.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 21 points to 15,324 Thursday, or 0.1 percent. The Dow was up 95 points in the afternoon, then faded in the last hour.

The Standard & Poor?s 500 rose six to 1,654, or 0.4 percent. The Nasdaq rose 23 points to 3,491.

Three stocks rose for every two that fell on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was average at 3.5 billion shares.

A thumbnail sketch of NBC's plans for fall season

Some highlights of NBC's moves in its schedule for next season.

WHAT'S NEW: A lot. The long-struggling network invested heavily in new programming, and has ordered 17 new series for next season. John Malkovich as Blackbeard. James Spader as a wanted fugitive. Dracula brought to life. A cops drama from the guy who made "Law & Order." More supernatural stuff from J.J. Abrams. A cooking show. A quiz show. A home renovation show. If a couple of these make an impression on viewers, NBC will be thrilled.

WHAT'S GONE: The newsmagazine "Rock Center," in a move sure to cause bad blood between NBC's news and entertainment divisions. Matthew Perry's star vehicle "Go On," failing to recreate that "Friends" magic. And about two dozen other sitcoms you never watched.

LIFE SUPPORT: The serial killer drama "Hannibal" has terrible ratings, but NBC had such high hopes for it this spring that executives can't bear to pull the plug. Maybe it's their livers on the line.

STAR POWER: Michael J. Fox is a beloved sitcom actor, respected even more for his dignity in handling Parkinson's Disease. Now he's essentially turning those real-life experiences into a sitcom, where he will play a sportscaster going back to work. Interestingly, NBC gave Sean Hayes a more prominent spot on a Thursday night schedule geared to broad-appeal comedies, perhaps so Fox won't feel the pressure to save the network. And Seth Meyers is moving from his "Weekend Update" desk to his own late night show.

WHAT THEY NEED: Somebody to save the network.

BIG MOVE: "Revolution" to Wednesday nights, where it will no longer have the advantage of a big audience tuning in for "The Voice." ''Chicago Fire" moves to Tuesday. Moving successful shows to new nights is always risky, perhaps even more so for programs at an early stage in their development.
