Starbucks to raise prices in certain regions

NEW YORK (AP) ? Starbucks said Tuesday it is raising some prices regionally as it faces rising ingredient costs.

The Seattle coffee chain is raising prices about 1 percent in the Northeast and Sunbelt regions. Starbucks wouldn't disclose all of the states its raising prices, but the regions include New York; Washington, D.C.; and most Southern states. They exclude California and Florida.

Other cities where it will raise prices include Boston, Atlanta, Dallas and Albuquerque, N.M.

The price for a "tall" coffee will go up 10 cents in the regions, and the chain will raise prices on about six other beverages. But beverages that are "grande," the next size up, won't change.

Starbucks spokesman Jim Olson says the prices reflect competition in certain markets and higher costs for coffee, fuel and other commodities.

The last across-the-board price increase was in 2007.

Starbucks has been a standout among its peers in the tough global economy because consumers have returned to small luxuries like lattes.

But it is facing challenges ranging from the drag of a weak economy on its customers to higher costs.

It has expanded overseas, increased the number of products it offers, expanded its loyalty program and upped its presence in grocery stores and other retailers to help drive growth.

Shares fell 43 cents to $45.58 in afternoon trading.

Anglicans have new US home in Catholic church (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI named a married former Episcopal bishop Sunday to head the first U.S. organizational structure for disaffected Anglicans and Episcopalians who want to join the Roman Catholic Church.

The Rev. Jeffrey Neil Steenson, a father of three and Catholic convert, will lead the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter, the equivalent of a diocese, that will be based in Houston, Texas, but will operate nationally.

The Vatican created the first such ordinariate in Britain last year. Other ordinariates are being considered in Australia and Canada.

Steenson stepped down in 2007 as the Episcopal Bishop of Rio Grande, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, after the Episcopal Church elected the first openly gay bishop, V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire. Steenson had said he was "deeply troubled" about the direction of the U.S. denomination and he described the Catholic Church as the "true home of Anglicanism."

The Episcopal Church is the U.S. Anglican body in the United States.

Benedict in 2009 issued an unprecedented invitation for Anglicans to become Catholic in groups or as parishes, at a time when traditional Anglicans in several countries were increasingly upset by the ordination of women and gay bishops. Formerly, Anglican converts to Catholicism were accepted on a case-by-case basis.

The pope's decision created tensions with Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, the spiritual leader of the world Anglican Communion, who like his predecessors had been in talks with Vatican officials to bring Anglicans and Catholics closer together.

The 77-million-member Anglican fellowship has its roots in the Church of England, which split from the Holy See in 1534 when English King Henry VIII was refused a marriage annulment.

At the time of the pope's announcement, Anglicans were already fracturing over Robinson's election and other issues. Williams had little advance notice of the Vatican announcement. Still, after meeting privately with the pope soon after, the archbishop of Canterbury said he was convinced that there was no "dawn raid" on his church by the Holy See.

Under the pope's plan, Anglicans who become Catholic will be allowed to keep some of their heritage in liturgy and other areas. Married Anglican priests who convert can stay married and be ordained in the Catholic Church, an exception to the Vatican's celibacy rule. Married Anglican bishops, however, cannot retain that position, and will serve the Catholic Church as priests.

More than 100 Anglican clergy have applied to become Catholic priests in the U.S. ordinariate. Church officials said more than 1,400 individuals are seeking to join. The U.S. Episcopal Church has just under 2 million members. Many Anglo-Catholics in the United States had never been part of the Episcopal Church.

Steenson, 59, who has a doctorate from the University of Oxford, has been married since 1974 and has three adult children. His wife also converted to Catholicism. He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 2009 in the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and helped create the education and training program for Anglican priests seeking to join the Catholic Church.

PFT: Dolphins want to 'shatter' Jets' hopes

    Kyle Orton, Tim TebowAP

By all accounts, Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow behaves like a perfect gentleman, and the ideal teammate.? But before he became the starting quarterback in Denver, his reaction ? or, more accurately, his lack thereof ? to the placement of a billboard lobbying for him to become the starting quarterback prompted a definite response from the other quarterbacks on the team.

According to Jeff Darlington of NFL Network, the other quarterbacks began fining Tebow four days after the billboard appeared, due to his failure to speak out against the billboard.

Per Darlington, the reason never was articulated to Tebow.? Whether Tebow figured it out on his own isn?t known.? (Fans of rival SEC schools possibly would point to his Florida education and suggest that he didn?t make the mental connection.)? But the fines continued for six days, until Tebow became the starter.

Though not nearly as juicy or revealing as a locker room fight or a sideline blowup, it?s the first evidence of any frustration with Tebow from his teammates.? And it?s further proof of a passive-aggressive style that Tebow periodically displays, making his point without causing a ruckus.? Like when he evaded direct questions from Shannon Sharpe of CBS as to whether Tebow believes he enjoys the full support of the organization.

Right or wrong, Tebow?s fellow quarterbacks believed he should have expressed disagreement with the billboard, and that by failing to do so he necessarily approved of it.? And so, instead of responding to passive-aggression with more of the same, Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn opted to take the Tebow by the horns and punish him financially for failing to truly be the kind of teammates everyone presumes him to be.

While irrelevant now that Tebow is the starter, it?ll be interesting to see what happens if/when fans ever purchase a billboard calling for Tebow to be benched.

UPDATE 4:41 p.m. ET:? As several of you have pointed out, and as I had forgotten, Tebow said on September 15 that he?d rather the money spent on the billboard be donated to his charitable foundation.? ?Well, I guess I appreciate the support, you know, but we got people in charge here that we trust and [I] trust they?re going to do the right thing,? Tebow said.? Apparently, the fines arose not after the billboard that prompted Tebow?s September 15 comments was displayed, but after another billboard went up.

(AP) ? Eighteen protesters connected to the nationwide Occupy movement were arrested Saturday outside the presidential campaign headquarters of Republicans Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum.

Local police in suburban Des Moines, Iowa, say the 16 adults and two juveniles were arrested for trespass, a simple misdemeanor. Most were released later Saturday.

Dozens of demonstrators massed outside the office where Bachmann had come to rally staff and make calls to potential caucus-goers. Campaign security told the protesters not to approach the office.

Urbandale police Lt. Kent Knopf said the 10 Occupy demonstrators were arrested, handcuffed and taken away in squad cars from Bachmann's office after they ignored security, who called police.

Bachmann did not come outside of the building, but she laughed off the disruption. "The people who are outside are the president's re-election advance team," she told reporters and others inside the office.

One young demonstrator, a 16-year-old high school student who was among those arrested in front of Bachmann's office, said she wished the candidate had come out and heard her concerns about the cost of higher education, the war in Afghanistan and the national debt.

The protesters moved on to Texas Gov. Rick Perry's campaign office, where no arrests were reported, and then on to Gingrich's office, where five more arrests were made. The demonstration shifted to Santorum's office, where three more were arrested.

Hundreds of Occupy activists from at least 10 states were expected to participate in a "People's Caucus" in Des Moines as the Jan. 3 caucuses near. The activists are promising to interrupt candidates at events and camp out at their Iowa campaign offices.

The congresswoman from Minnesota is far back in public opinion polls as the first vote in the Republican nominating season begins, but insisting that a surprise is coming on Tuesday.

"I'm believing in a miracle because I know the one who gives miracles," she said in an interview being taped for ABC News.

Bachmann didn't venture outside the Des Moines-area on Saturday; her only public event on Sunday is an appearance at the Oskaloosa church where she has the pastor's support.
