Part of the joy of Thanksgiving for me is the leftovers. I cook a turkey bigger than my family could ever eat on the day, I make huge amounts of dressing, I even cram some in a loaf pan to bake so it can be sliced to fit on a sandwich. My shopping lists include good bread, cheese and condiments for next day sandwiches. I?ve made fig, bourbon and vanilla bean jam and rosemary pear butter months ahead to spread on those sandwiches.

After the fun of a formal meal, it?s nice to gather the next day (usually at someone else?s house, lucky me) very casually, in jeans and comfy sweaters, to enjoy our own sandwich creations.

If the leftovers are a big part of your tradition, or if you have guests around the house through the weekend, add this salad to your plans. As long as you are buying (and peeling) all those sweet potatoes for the big meal, it?s worth the little extra effort to have this stashed in the fridge.

It is an absolute dream next to a turkey sandwich, better than a bag of chips, and looks like you really went that extra mile. Earthy sweet potatoes, crunchy pecans, tart cranberries and rich maple syrup create a symphony of fall flavor. If your fridge is full to bursting, you can store this in a ziptop bag in a crisper drawer to take up less room.

A word about process. Don?t be tempted to do that TV chef-y thing and put the potato cubes directly on the baking sheet, casually drizzle over oil and roast.? When you do that, there is inevitably too much oil, and the potatoes steam rather than roast, so they don?t get those nice, crisp edges, but are mushy and soft.?

Lightly toss the potatoes with a small amount of oil in a bowl, rubbing around with your hands to get a little coating on each cube, then lift the potatoes out of the bowl onto a baking sheet (I line mine with non-stick foil for easy cleaning), leaving any extra oil behind. I do this with all my roasted vegetables.

Autumn sweet potato salad
Serves 6?

2 1/2 pounds sweet potatoes (about 4 medium)

1/3 cup plus 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided

1/4 cup maple syrup (grade B amber)

1/4 cup apple cider vinegar

1 tablespoon dijon mustard

3?4 fresh sage leaves

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Ground black pepper

4 green onions, white and some dark green parts, finely chopped

2/3 cup chopped pecans, lightly toasted

2/3 cup dried cranberries

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Peel the sweet potatoes and cut into 1/2 inch pieces. You want them to be bite-sized and roughly the same size so they roast evenly. Toss the potato cubes with the 2 tablespoons olive oil and a pinch of salt. Use your hands to make sure every potato cube has just a slick of oil on it. Lift the potatoes out of the bowl onto a rimmed baking sheet.?

Roast them for 25?30 minutes, until a knife easily slides into a potato piece. You want them to be cooked through but not mushy.?They should still hold their shape and have a little bite. Cool the potatoes to room temperature.

Put the mustard, maple syrup, vinegar, sage, cinnamon, salt, and pepper in a blender and blend until smooth. With the motor running, drizzle in the remaining 1/3 cup olive oil until you have a creamy, emulsified dressing.

When the potatoes are cool, gently toss them with the chopped green onions, pecans and cranberries. Pour over the dressing and toss until all the potatoes are coated. It?s fine if you prefer not to use all the dressing, but reserve the remainder in case you want to add some later.

Refrigerate the potato salad, tightly covered, for several hours or up to a few days.

Vision stimulates courtship calls in the grey tree frog

Male tree frogs like to 'see what they're getting' when they select females for mating, according to a new study by Dr. Michael Reichert from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the US. His work, which is one of the first to test the importance of vision on male mating behaviors in a nocturnal anuran (frog or toad), is published online in Springer's journal Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology.

Animals display a number of courtship behaviors and are able to modulate these behaviors depending on the likelihood of mating. For example, displaying males may increase the expression of a costly courtship behavior when receptive females are nearby. Male anurans also exhibit unique behaviors when females are in close proximity, including courtship calls.

Reichert's work looks at the role of vision on the production of courtship calls in the grey tree frog, Hyla versicolor. Frogs are highly sensitive to motion so visual cues are likely to stimulate the production of courtship calls.

Male and female frogs were captured from local ponds in Boone County, Missouri. The males were then split into two groups - one group could see the female at close range; the other group were separated from the female by an opaque screen. Reichert recorded and compared the vocal behavior - both number of courtship calls and their duration - of both groups of male frogs.

He found that males were highly responsive to the visual cues from the female, and they altered their calling behavior to be more attractive to the female. Specifically, males were significantly more likely to give courtship calls when they were able to see an approaching female, and their calls were longer.

Reichert concludes: "In the noisy chorus environment, males can only attract females from a limited distance; thus, a strategy of monitoring the environment for female cues, and only producing the highest performance calls when females are present, should balance the costs of high performance calls while maximizing the likelihood of attracting a mate."

Lowe's quarterly sales, profit beat Wall Street views

(Reuters) - Lowe's Cos Inc's reported a higher-than-expected quarterly profit on Monday as preparation and rebuilding efforts tied to superstorm Sandy boosted business at the world's No. 2 home improvement chain, which raised its full-year sales forecast.

Shares of Lowe's rose 3.5 percent to $33.10 in premarket trading.

The company said sales had risen 1.9 percent to $12.1 billion in the third quarter ended November 2, while analysts on average expected $11.9 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Sales at stores open at least year rose 1.8 percent both globally and in the United States, an improvement over the previous quarter, when same-store sales fell.

Lowe's now expects total sales for the year ending on January 31 to be up 2 percent, excluding the effect of an extra week, compared with an earlier forecast of a 1 percent rise.

Still, for the 14th straight quarter, Lowe's same-store sales lagged those of larger rival Home Depot Inc. The industry leader last week raised its full-year outlook independently of any future sales lift from Sandy, as it benefited from a recent uptick in the U.S. housing market.

While Home Depot's third quarter ended before Sandy battered the U.S. Northeast, Lowe's third quarter ended a few days after the superstorm made landfall on October 29, killing dozens and leaving millions without electricity for days.

Net income rose to $396 million, or 35 cents per share, from $225 million, or 18 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding some items like write-downs and a charge for a discontinued project, the profit came to 40 cents a share, 5 cents higher than analysts' estimates.

But the Mooresville, North Carolina-based company gave a cautious forecast. It affirmed its outlook from August that its full-year profit would come to $1.64 a share, which is 2 cents below what Wall Street was projecting.

Lowe's has cut jobs, curbed store expansion and streamlined its supply chain to reduce costs and compete better with Home Depot, but it has yet to see the efforts bear fruit.

Home Depot has won shoppers from Lowe's by offering better pricing and service, while Lowe's strategy of "everyday low prices" rather than promotions has driven some customers away.

Lowe's Chief Executive Officer Robert Niblock said in August that the company's current "transformation phase" would probably not end until mid-2013. In a statement on Monday, he said his company's execution of the transformation was "improving."

'Argo' is one of the best movies of the year.

Argo has that solid, kick-the-tires feel of those studio films from the 70s that were about something but also entertained. Only it's as laugh outright amusing as it is sobering.

The movieland satire is laid on thick, but it's also deadly accurate. Schlock has never seemed so patriotic, and Arkin and Goodman have rarely been so good.

Argo is a rollicking yarn, easily the most cohesive and technically accomplished of Affleck's three films so far, but a part of me wishes the director hadn't cast himself in the lead role.

If nothing else, it proves that every so often, the CIA can pull something off - and that yes, Canadians are just about the nicest people on the planet.

The film is a whopper of a tale, one designed for Oscar nominations, Best Picture and Best Director among them.

A brilliant thriller that's based on a historical incident, 'Argo' is one of the best films of 2012.

A wonderfully lively and engrossing movie ...

An enthralling and deliciously entertaining movie -- and a deserved triumph for its star and director.

The details make for a rip-roaring story, which Affleck invests with old-school directorial ?lan.

Ben Affleck leaps on to the A-list of directors with this relentlessly entertaining thriller, combining comedy and nerve-jangling suspense to maximum effect.

If you're a nailbiter, bring gloves, because the suspense will see you reach your knuckles.

Surprisingly enjoyable, given that you may have little prior commitment to this story and only mildly fancy Affleck.

Affleck skilfully turns the screw of suspense, gaining added traction from an extremely convincing recreation of the setting and period.

Ben Affleck's movie tells an amazing but true story set against the context of the Iranian hostage crisis.

Talent borrows and genius steals, but Affleck does something in between: he mimics.

It's impossible to be bored by a story this good, especially with that cast.

Part of what makes this headspinning story believable is the fact that it pans out in an oddly uncomplicated way.

The shaggy and bearded Ben Affleck, barely recognisable from his former self, gives a great lead performance. Understated, intense and steely-eyed, Affleck has the screen presence of legendary actor/director Clint Eastwood.

Affleck the director is utterly sure-footed with an instinctive feel for characterization, tension and pacing as he builds the action towards a nail-biting climax.

A dum-tight thriller demonstrating that Affleck is one of the most accomplished directors working in Hollywood today.

[A] gripping, beautifully performed and often very funny but dramatic thriller.

[Affleck] once again proves, as he did in The Town, that he's a pretty good actor but a great director.

Nailing the tension, the terror and the gallows humour of its story without resorting to jingoism or losing sight of its political context, Argo is a close-to-flawless thriller with a devilishly smart mouth.

Better to watch it as a meta cinema commentary than a historical thriller. Either way, Argo is both smart and fun but ultimately lightweight. Star Wars fans may well cry before the credits roll.

Who doesn?t love a good sex scandal? Thanks to former CIA director, General Petraeus, we were all able to feast on someone else?s fall from grace. While this is not the first time a public official has flown too close to the sun of extramarital lust, this was a man in charge of the secretive operations of the United States of America who gets caught in large part because he misused and misunderstood gmail. If the director of the most advanced spy agency in the world can?t conduct an affair in secret, what hope does this leave for the rest of the extramarital affair seekers?

This article isn?t about the rudimentary technology mistakes Petraeus made in conducting the affair. There are already enough articles on that subject. But the Petraeus affair did get my wheels turning on the effects that social media technology have had on fidelity and how the information gained from these technologies can be used in divorce cases.

We have never been more connected. From your bank account to e-mail to the time the next train comes, you can access everything from your smartphone. This also means that we have never been more able to easily exchange flirtatious ?sexts? or plan secret rendezvous.

Technology makes it possible for a person to Google or Facebook search the name of a high school sweetheart and rekindle long lost loves. Websites like Ashley Madison are solely dedicated to helping people in committed relationships find other people in committed relationships to have affairs with. Physiologists are reporting a growing number of couples that cite social media as the chosen method of reconnecting with lost loves and affair engagers.

But, while it?s easier to conduct these affairs, it?s also easier to get caught. As the Petraeus affair highlighted, if you?re not savvy about how e-mail, social networking sites, and IP addresses work, it is quite simple to have your every move tracked. Not only is getting caught embarrassing and devastating to your personal life, your Internet based transgressions are often offered as evidence in divorce cases.

Gone are the days of private detectives. Now, parties in a divorce case will often turn to social media behaviour and e-mails as evidence of infidelity. Numerous family law lawyers and firms are reporting a steady and noticeable increase in the number of divorce cases where this kind of evidence is being used. Since 2010, social media and e-mail have been the key part in over 700 divorce cases. Lawyers are using social media in litigation as evidence of person?s state of mind, their whereabouts, their actions, and the time and place actions took place. In fact, one in five divorce cases in the United States involve Facebook in some way.

What may seem like an ordinary update to your Facebook status could be used to your detriment in a court of law. Courts, and the judges that preside over them, are taking notice of the evidentiary benefits of social media and requesting that parties turn over their social media passwords in order to gain access to relevant information. In the May 2011 case, Zimmerman v. Weis Markets, the Pennsylvania court ruled that parties can be ordered to turn over passwords, usernames, and logins for social networking sites.

However, the party requesting the order must be able to show that there is a reasonable likelihood that divulging this information would lead to the discovery of information relevant to the case. For example, if you are claiming that your husband is unfit to care for your children, but last week you posted about how great a father he is?you see where this is going.

In conclusion, be careful what you post online. It seems to this author that Petraeus, and many others, have suffered because of the belief that their secrets are safe behind a computer screen. The laptop is like a car. In a car you get a false sense of privacy and you start picking your nose, forgetting everyone can see you. Behind a laptop in the privacy of your home you get a false sense that your online actions are private, when in fact, they are very public and very accessible.
