Unique photography rig captures snowflakes in mid-flight

They say no two snowflakes look the same ? well, scientists at the University of Utah aren't going to take that for granted. They've devised a photography rig that can take detailed photos and measurements of thousands of snowflakes in a single night.

It's called the Multi-Angle Snowflake Camera, and it's just what it sounds like. Three cameras are arrayed around an infrared sensor that detects the presence of a snowflake and tells the cameras to fire. By lighting the snowflake carefully and using a super-short exposure (1/25,000th of a second), they can get tack-sharp images of snowflakes on the fly.

The system is so efficient that it can take tens ofthousands of shots in a single night. While that may be too many to browse through for fun, it's a huge benefit to researchers. Meteorologists only have a partial understanding of snowflakes ? their size, density, shape, fall speed, things like that ? because, naturally enough, they tend to melt before anyone can get a good look at them.

MASC is the project of University of Utah atmospheric scientist Tim Garrett, and the setup has been spun off as a separate company, Fallgatter Technologies. Right now, the company's device is documenting snowflakes at Utah's famous Alta ski area.

Scientists in the 1970s also measured snowflakes, but it was by hand, which must have been extremely delicate (and cold) work ? "I knew the guy who did it and he felt he needed to get glasses because of this project," Garrett told LiveScience.

And if the snowflakes in the pictures don't look much like the symmetrical geometric shapes one usually think of (and which were recently captured in stunning fashion by macro photographer Andrew Osokin), that's because most "snowflakes" are actually clumps made up of smaller flakes that have collided or broken apart.

Achieving a better understanding of snowflakes means a better understanding of snowy weather systems. Alta, for example, can use it to gauge the quality of the snow falling, and the Army is planning to use the device to improve its avalanche prediction techniques.

Chinese Hackers Have Been Attacking The New ... - Business Insider

For the past four months the New York Times has been under attack by Chinese hackers, the newspaper says.

The hackers were able to "infiltrate its computer systems" and get passwords from reporters and other employees. The Times says it hired an outside firm to study the hacks and block them for good. It also says that no customer information was leaked by these attacks.

The Times thinks the motivation was an investigation into the relatives of China's prime minister, Wen Jiabao, and how their business dealings turned them into billionaires.

The hackers were tricky about hiding their tracks. They used a technique called "spearphishing" where they sent emails laced with malicious links. Once opened, malware was secretly downloaded onto the recipients computers. The email was routed through U.S. universities to disguise their origin. These were the same U.S. universities used to disguise Chinese hacker attacks on the U.S. military, the Times says.

Chinese officials deny that the government or military were involved in the attacks.

These type of super targeted attacks, where hackers work to break into a specific company, are particularly hard to defend against. The industry calls them "advanced persistent threats." But there are some U.S. security startups with technology that can thwart them including FireEye, which earlier this month landed a $50 million round of financing and a big name new CEO, Dave DeWalt.

Super Bowl 2013: NFL Experience kicks off with a Who Dat flair

The Super Bowl 2013 NFL Experience kicked off today (Jan. 30) with the delivery of the iconic Vince Lombardi Trophy to the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, where it was installed at the interactive fan festival with all the expected pomp and circumstance. Accompanying it, though, were no small amount of Who Dats and where y?ats.

Former Saints runningback and enduring fan favorite Deuce McAllister got the party started, donning white cotton gloves to carry the trophy down a red carpet to its perch in the middle of the event floor, where it will reside until being awarded to the winner of the big game on Sunday. (And where fans can take pictures of themselves with it.) Leading the way for McAllister were members of the Louisiana State Police. Behind were Saints mascot Sir Saint, the Saintsations cheerleaders and the St. Augustine High School Marching 100 marching band.

And all around, watching the procession and snapping away with cell-phone cameras, was a heavily black-and-gold crowd. That?s because today was Saints fan appreciation day at the NFL Experience, whereby anybody wearing a Saints jersey got a $5 discount off the price of admission. Local fans took advantage of the opportunity.

Diehard Saints fan Jeff Hall of Meridian, Miss., was one of the members of the Who Dat Nation in that number, making a beeline to the event?s autograph stage. Accompanied by son Dustin Hall and family friend Chris Elder, he brought along a Saints helmet -- already peppered with autographs -- as well what one NFL Experience volunteer declared to be the oddest item of the day to be autographed: a three-foot oval wooden plaque with a fleur-de-lis in the middle.

Hall's plaque was already covered with the autographs of 20 Saints players, including that of Saints quarterback Drew Brees, for which Hall reserved the plaque?s central fleur-de-lis. (?We got it after the last game of the season,? Hall said. ?We had to fight the crowd to get it, too.?)

Today?s additions: McAllister?s and current Saints runningback Mark Ingram?s signatures, bringing the number of autographs to 22.

?I?d like to get (Marques) Colston and Pierre Thomas, and then I think we?ll be done,? Hall said after collecting McAllister and Ingram?s autographs on the plaque, which he got two years ago and which hangs in a place of honor over his television.

Another popular stopover for black-and-gold jersey wearers: the Hall of Fame exhibit, which includes the bust of? Hall-of-Famer and former Saints standout Willie Roaf.

The hometown bias of the crowd can be expected to change this weekend when fans of this year?s Super Bowl teams, the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens, arrive in town for the big game. The size of the crowd -- which today resembled sort of the NFL Experience?s version of a Jazzfest Thursday -- will, too.

But with the event covering more than 850,000 square feet and including everything from games to museum-quality exhibits to a working NFL Network set, there?s plenty of room for fans of all colors.

Tickets to the NFL Experience driven by GMC -- to be held at the Convention Center daily through Sunday (Feb. 3) -- can be purchased over the phone by calling (866) TIX-4NFL (849-4635), online at www.SuperBowl.com or at the stadium box office at Gate A. Fans can also purchase tickets at the Convention Center box office one hour before opening.

Israeli astronaut's widow carries on after tragedy

JERUSALEM (AP) ? It's a day Israelis will never forget: Feb. 1, 2003, when national pride abruptly turned to national tragedy.

People gathered around their TV screens to watch the anticipated return of Israel's first astronaut, Ilan Ramon, from a 16-day journey in space aboard the American Columbia shuttle. A hero's welcome awaited, but as people watched the live broadcast, unbelieving, the shuttle craft disintegrated upon re-entering the atmosphere, killing Ramon and his six crewmates.

For Ramon's widow, Rona, it was the first in a pair of cruel blows. Six years later, her oldest son, Asaf, who had followed in his father's footsteps to become an Israeli air force fighter pilot, was killed in a training accident.

Ramon, 48, is still unable to discuss the loss of her son. "I live that every moment, but at the same time try to still look for meaning in life," Ramon said in a phone interview.

She said she has slowly tried to recover, leading a foundation formed in memory of her husband and son and counseling others who are coping with tragedy.

As the country's first astronaut, Ilan Ramon was a national hero, and Israelis closely followed his accomplishments. Ramon's image while floating in space, a big smile on his face, was shown repeatedly on TV broadcasts.

Though he was not religious, Ramon, who was 48 when he was killed, insisted on keeping Jewish kosher dietary laws in space, since he saw himself a representative of the Jewish people. He consulted a rabbi on how to observe his faith in orbit.

A son of a Holocaust survivor, he also took several meaningful items into space, including a pencil sketch of the moon drawn by a young Jew who later perished at the Nazi Auschwitz death camp. Ramon also took a miniature Torah scroll rescued from the Holocaust, along with other religious items.

Ten years later, the memory of the Columbia accident is still strong in Israel. Though the country is accustomed to national tragedies, the Columbia disaster was especially painful. An uplifting journey had captivated a nation and elicited great hope and promise, yet in a minute it turned into an outpouring of grief.

"What I remember most from that day was the expectation, the joy and the longing to see him return. The great loss that followed left me heartbroken," Ramon told The Associated Press. With the families of the other astronauts, she was at the Florida landing site, waiting for the shuttle. "I remember the moment we realized what had happened, and they removed us from the landing site. I just looked up at the sky and said 'God, bring him back to me.'"

Ilan Ramon, a fighter pilot who took part in Israel's bombing of an Iraqi nuclear reactor in 1981, has become a national icon. Dozens of schools and other institutions are named after him. Each year, NASA sends a delegation to a space conference held in his honor. This year's is in progress now.

Rona Ramon largely stayed out of the public eye for years following his death, trying to make sense of her loss. "Realizing in a moment that your life has changed forever is a huge shock," she said. But on Sept. 13, 2009, she was forced back into the spotlight by the death of their oldest son.

Capt. Asaf Ramon, who was 21, was killed when his F-16 warplane crashed in a routine training flight. Inspired by his father, he had excelled in his training and was awarded his pilot's wings by President Shimon Peres. Asaf had expressed hope that he, too, would one day become an astronaut.

The pair of tragedies inspired Rona Ramon to earn an M.A. in holistic health from Lesley University in Massachusetts. She has branched out to psycho-spiritual coaching in hopes of better helping others cope with personal tragedies.

"The decision to go study emerged from the crisis I went through," she said. "Only by directly facing it could I cope."

Her studies have helped her recognize that she is now coping with "anniversary grief."

"Time is tricky. Over time you lose objectivity," she said. "Sometimes it feels like it happened ages ago and sometimes it feels like it just happened."

Over the past few years she has found comfort in her work at The Ramon Foundation, a nonprofit she established that promotes personal and social excellence through space, flight, science and technology. She also gives speeches across Israel and offers grief counseling to others.

She has three surviving children. One son is studying music in college. The other, with her consent, is a combat soldier in the army and her daughter is in high school.

Ilan's parents, who also became well-known figures in Israel during the Columbia mission, have since passed away.

On her way to Tuesday's opening of the Annual International Ilan Ramon Space Conference, hosting 14 heads of space agencies from around the world, including NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, Rona Ramon said Tuesday that she mostly felt pride in her family.

"I'm surrounded by so many friends and so much support," she said. "When I think of Ilan, the first thing I think about is his smile. That is his legacy."
